I wouldn't be surprised if in three years, NIL and the portal don't resemble what we see today. Coaches getting fired during the season shows the heat is getting turned up and IMO, that means coaches will be willing to take a chance on a portal QB more than developing their own.

While I don't blame kids for transferring if they want to, I see it degrading the relationship some between the fan and the team. We follow these kids as they're being recruited up through them graduating. There's a certain connection we develop that to me was art of what makes CFB great. Even with Sam and how he ingrained himself to the team and university, it just felt a little different with him.
I do have some of those same concerns, but my take on Sam was different than yours. The way Sam handled himself and seemed to truly embrace what ND is all about endeared him even more to me. The fact that he could "get" ND in his limited time on campus was truly awesome. I didn't feel any different towards Sam as I did Bertrand, Cross, Tyree, etc.

Can any of you ever remember having a QB room and incoming QB talent lined up like this? Been a fan since around 82' or so, and never recall this level of QB depth. 5 QB's with avg 4* 94 rating, and avg height of 6'3". Leonard's numbers are his 2023 transfer portal numbers.

(Transfer) Leonard 4* 92 rating, #5 ranking (of 40 QB's in portal) 6'4"
(2022) Angeli 3* 89 rating, #365 ranking, 6'3"
(2023) Minchey 4* 93 rating, #168 ranking, 6'1.5"
(2024) Carr 4* 97 rating, #59 ranking, 6'2.5"
(2025) Knight 4* 97 rating, #49 ranking, 6'4.5"

On paper, the recruited QB's have gotten better each year by rating/ranking.

Take one in every recruiting class. Bring them in to compete. I still think it is important.

Coan and Hartman did ND well in the grand scheme of things. I think Leonard will to. If you have an opportunity to get a guy in The Portal that is the difference between going 10-2 or 12-0, you do that. Even on a lesser scale of 8-4 or 10-2, you make that move for the continuity of the program.

Agreed. Also the trickiest (and one of the most important) players on the roster has become QB2. At least for teams with our aspirations.

Winning a title going forward will be a 16-game gauntlet. Very few QBs will survive that kind of season without some injury, meaning you're probably going to have to rely on your QB2 to win at least one game. Yet very few talented QBs, at least after their freshman or maybe redshirt freshman year, will be content to sit as QB2. They'll transfer to chase starting jobs instead.

So yeah you'd better bring in a recruit who can someday (soon) be a credible starter, every damn year. Keep the pipeline loaded.

It's an interesting point, but I'm far more concerned about my QB2 in the NFL than in college. We'll have to see how that plays out over the course of the new format, but if you end up being right, that's going to change the landscape dramatically.

I like the idea of having good OL and DL with a running game and defense. If that is what Marcus Freeman is going for, I think that model will work in the new playoff format. You probably are not going to have a roster of five stars with Stetson Bennett or Carson Beck behind center in most cases.

Sign a guy every year, recruit or portal. Have four scholarship QB in the room if at all possible, even in this modern age.
