I think he didn't like the 2 pt conversion either. The only reason Kelly went for 2 was to let Jim now he was a moron.

Just wondering why we cannot run, given our offensive line was supposed to be a strength and our running backs are talented

We got our asses handed to us by a clearly superior team, If stanford beats Oregon i got them going undefeated

Crist played terribly and timidly

O-line sucked

Punting needs serious improvement

The entire offense looked intimidated starting with the first snap. You just can't play scared, it will never lead to success.

Thorough observations.

General:

Offense - Garbage. Terrible blocking and completely out of sync with each other.
Defense - Garbage, but they kept us in the game for three quarters. I love the play of our corners and Te'o.
Special Teams - Ruffer is the most consistent player on the team. Turk needs some serious work.

Players:

Dayne Crist - F - Timid, inaccurate and HORRIBLE decision-making, mixed with some absolutely stupid throws.

Armando Allen - C - No room. Ran hard. Average.

Jonas Gray - C+ - Pretty decent when he got the football.

Cierre Wood - F - Worst kick returner I've seen at Notre Dame. So reluctant to hit the hole and use his explosiveness.

Michael Floyd - B - Would've had 200 yards if the OL had blocked.

Theo Riddick - B+ - Would've had 100+ if the OL had blocked. Solid game, regardless. Almost had 2 TDs.

TJ Jones - D - Where have you been the last two weeks, TJ?

John Goodman - B+ - I like Goodman. We need to see more of him. 59 yards today.

Kyle Rudolph - F - Could not have had a worse game if he tried.

OL - F - No running room and no protection for Crist.

DL - F - No penetration and no pressure.

Darius Fleming - C- - Eh. He is who he is.

Brian Smith - F - Get off the field. Where's Steve Filer? Shembo?

Kerry Neal - D - Had the deflection that led to Darrin's second pick of the year. Other than that, he was utter crap.

Manti Te'o - A - 21 tackles, all over the field, some huge hits. Could not have asked for more from him.

Carlo Calabrese - B - I like this kid. Once he gets more consistent, he could be a solid LB for us.

Anthony MacDonald - F - Eh.

Darrin Walls - B- - Best game of the year for Darrin. Still getting beat on all of the pass plays.

Gary Gray - B+ - Allowed one catch that I saw. I really like this guy.

Robert Blanton - A+ - Could not have had a better game if he tried.

Harrison Smith - C - Eh.

Jamoris Slaughter - C - Eh. First pick is a positive.

Zeke Motta - F - Eh.

David Ruffer - A+ - Solid kicker.

Ben Turk - D - Eh.

What he does out there is in no way entertainment.

Ok other than the TD run against Purdue name another play where he truly cost us. You mean the way Luck threw a perfect pass over Brian Smith who could not have covered any better, or is it all the times Mayock calls him out on the little things he does to disrupt a play. I seriously wonder if fans either

A) watch the game or just see the highlights or flip back and forth between commercials

B) Watch other teams play and just dont realise how good Stanford is

That doesnt stop people from putting players on blast who are representing the university you apparently love. This isnt calling out a player like Crist who had a bad game, it is saying that someone is a waste of a uniform.

im 22 and i expect alot more from grown men on a Notre Dame board

our OLBs are NOT doing their jobs, PERIOD.

Fleming is the best of the bunch, and even that doesn't put him on the field with one of Lou's teams. Neal and Smith both garbage.

They almost NEVER get pressure upfield, NEVER get off their blocks to make plays (ie outside rushes), and are RARELY making plays in coverage. Bring in the new blood, we need someone in there that has some cojones like Teo and Carlo

Our ILBs are also weak in pass coverage, but at least bring intensity and make plays on the runs. MacDonald is unimpressive in coverage, might as well keep Carlo in there full time

True.

Not entirely true. Calabrese is fairly decent in coverage.

Wow! Stanford has a coach who has been there 4 years...we have a coach who has been here 4 games. Harbough has his own players in a program that he has built for 4 years. His first year he started out 4-8...Did you listen to what Mayock said at the end of the game...This is going to be a process and the kids have to buy into the program. CLEARLY Stanford is a very good team, which is why they are ranked and we are not! They crushed UCLA and UCLA crushed Texas today!

Look we lost two close games, which probably was draining on the team. Stanford is clearly a better team than us and we are probably just as good as Michigan and MSU. Kelly we succeed here just give him time.

to Shaq: yeah, he's better than Mac, hence my final point

but we've seen better, i'm sure you'll agree

him and Teo will keep getting better, they have the fire, that's the main thing

Dayne Crist - F - Timid, inaccurate and HORRIBLE decision-making, mixed with some absolutely stupid throws.
Had a bad game against a good team. Looked like you would expect a player with only three starts to look playing against a top 20 team. He was confused and gun shy because he was getting crushed every pass play because the OL had a terrible day.

Armando Allen - C - No room. Ran hard. Average.
nowhere to run, but he did run hard and pick up some yardage on effort alone. maybe a C+
Jonas Gray - C+ - Pretty decent when he got the football.
Had one nice run that I remember (9 yards). Why give hime a higher grade than AA?

Cierre Wood - F - Worst kick returner I've seen at Notre Dame. So reluctant to hit the hole and use his explosiveness.
He missed a key blitz pickup too that got Crist crushed. I think he tried to run hard on KO returns today, but there just wasn't anything there.

Michael Floyd - B - Would've had 200 yards if the OL had blocked.
Floyd had a nice game, but he still isn't the Mike Floyd of last year. After two games last year he had 5 TDs and 400 yards receiving. This year, he doesn't have anything close to that after 4 games. Starting to think that this offense doesn't suit him.

Theo Riddick - B+ - Would've had 100+ if the OL had blocked. Solid game, regardless. Almost had 2 TDs.
Had a nice game, but he dropped a couple balls too.

TJ Jones - D - Where have you been the last two weeks, TJ?
He could have had a TD in the first quarter but Crist threw a terrible pass that nearly got picked instead. TJ had 2 steps on the defender and would have scored easily if Crist would have put it in front of him with a little air under it.

John Goodman - B+ - I like Goodman. We need to see more of him. 59 yards today.
Glad to see Goodman on the field. He's going to be a solid receiver and he showed good hands and ability to run after the catch today.

Kyle Rudolph - F - Could not have had a worse game if he tried.
Stanford keyed on him all night. With all that coverage on him, can't understand how Crist couldn't find anyone else open. Then again, he didn't have a whole lot of time to work with either. Not sure Rudolph deserves an F here.

OL - F - No running room and no protection for Crist.
Reminded me of a Latina line today.

DL - F - No penetration and no pressure.
I don't think they came close to Luck all day, but Teo wouldn't have had the game he had if the DL wasn't occupying linemen. Again, don't think and F is fair here.

Darius Fleming - C- - Eh. He is who he is.
We need more athletic OLBs. He did OK, but not as well as last week (which was just average IMO)

Brian Smith - F - Get off the field. Where's Steve Filer? Shembo?
He was pretty invisible all day ... as usual.

Kerry Neal - D - Had the deflection that led to Darrin's second pick of the year. Other than that, he was utter crap.
He's just too slow to play OLB. That said, I thought it may have been the best game he played this season so far ... but that's not saying much.

Manti Te'o - A - 21 tackles, all over the field, some huge hits. Could not have asked for more from him.
Had a great game.

Carlo Calabrese - B - I like this kid. Once he gets more consistent, he could be a solid LB for us.
He is a solid player who is going to be a star in a couple of years.

Anthony MacDonald - F - Eh.
Didn't see him do anything today.

Darrin Walls - B- - Best game of the year for Darrin. Still getting beat on all of the pass plays.
He missed a key tackle in the first half that allowed Standord to extend a drive that they ended up scoring on. But, besides that, I thought he had a decent game.

Gary Gray - B+ - Allowed one catch that I saw. I really like this guy.
I think he is our best CB. Can't understand why Wies played him so infrequently.

Robert Blanton - A+ - Could not have had a better game if he tried.
Had a good game.

Harrison Smith - C - Eh.
I think he had a good game and in face, has had a really nice season so far this year. He may be the most consistent DB on the team this season (along with Gray)
Jamoris Slaughter - C - Eh. First pick is a positive.
He had an OK game. Nothing earth shattering. Was good to have him back if for nothing else than to have a little depth at Safety.

Zeke Motta - F - Eh.
Don't know what he did to deserve an F, but he's still young and learning how to play college football.

David Ruffer - A+ - Solid kicker.
Can't get better than perfect.

Ben Turk - D - Eh.
Never ever do that running rugby punt again. Asside from that he has been solid this season. Only 1 punt returned all season. That is pretty darn good.

Stanford plays the way i wish we payed. You really think they have better ahletes on D than us?

They are just incredibly coached, they dont think, they react. They NEVER missed tackles, and they were just jumping at the snap consitantly. That what 4 years in a system can do to player development when the coaches know how to develop.

BTW looks like Polian can coach.

I'm curious why Kelly did not shake Harbaugh's hand after the game.

Maybe for going for 2 when the outcome was pretty well decided, and for kicking a field goal with a little over a minute left when ettiquette dictates you run the ball on 4th in a blowout.

I agree with everything you just said Jason, except still no sold on Polian yet lol. I was thinking the whole game that Stanford plays the way I wish we played. Hey in 4 years that could be us, but only better!

they'll be tougher than marines then,

as I seem cursed when it comes to my favorite teams in sports, save one (to a degree). Take a gander:

College: ND
NFL: Cleveland, Miami
NHL: Montreal Canadiens
Rugby: All Blacks, is my only beacon as the best team in the world, but even here, they are cursed when it comes to the World Cup, last winning it in 87

I hope someone sees this post and relays it to the guys who played defense today. Maybe some of those guy's friends read here. They played as far as I am concerned as good as could be expected with not much help from the offense. My hat is off to them. Thank you Teo for coming to Notre Dame and I hope for the effort you give that this team buys in and you get some help because you are one fine football player. The whole defense left it all on the field and my eyes told me Stanford is just better. Thanks for the effort. By the way I wouldnt shake Harbaughs hand either and even though the victor gets the spoils I would file that one away for future references.

Never heard of All Blacks, so on them I can't comment, but Les Habitants have won more Cups than any other team.

you're right on the Habs but zippity zero since 1993, although it IS the only team I follow that won a championship during my ADULT life !!

I was just starting to watch football in my teens when ND won its last NC, fell in love with them right away: french name, catholic, gold helmets, smashmouth football

since then: nothing

cursed I am...

All-Blacks will win it in 2011 at least. Home field advantage.

But yeah, you are a bad luck charm. Notre Dame is what is keeping me from being the ultimate successful sports fan.

College football: ND
NFL: Indianapolis Colts
MLB: Cincinnati Reds
NHL: Chicago Blackhawks
College Basketball: Butler

Well said.

Well said.

Refreshing to read after all the chicken little posts here.

1. Stanford is much better than I, and probably many of you, thought.

2. The front 7 on D are weak. Not individually, but as a unit. They don't "suck", they aren't "terrible", but they are weak. This trickles down to the rest of the D. The secondary cannot be expected to cover all day long, waiting for one of the front 7 to get to the QB. Our corners have surprisingly turned into very good open field tacklers.

3. It looked, to me, as if Harbaugh's plan was to get up in Crist's face early. To place that doubt in his mind, and the minds of the O-Linemen, and then sit back and cover with 7, while rushing 4. This appears to have been a great gameplan, as it worked out pretty well for them. On Crist's pick 6, it appears that he probably saw the OLB coming nearly free, and threw a horrible pass (without setting his feet at all, I might add, as if he felt like he HAD to get the ball out NOW) that sealed the game for the Cardinal.

4. You nancies should get a grip. I have alot of complaints about this team, but you are either a fan, or you aren't. You don't have to say only nice things about the team, but don't come on here whining about how you don't feel like watching ND anymore. ND is about more than wins and losses. While the wins and losses are certainly important, there are not ALL that there is to the Notre Dame mystique.

5. ShaqEvansIsGod should get his own Thread title, and stop trying to horn in on my action.
