Sunday quick slants from Weis | Around the Bend

After arguably the most eviscerating loss in recent Notre Dame memory, a 24-23 shocker to eight-loss Syracuse, Irish coach Charlie Weis offered a defense of his tenure Sunday that asked loyalists one question while begging another.

The question asked: Are you satisfied with Notre Dame going from bad to decent in one year?

The question begged: Does what you're seeing in 2008 qualify as "decent"?

"I reflected back off of last year to this year to next year," Weis said in his weekly day-after press conference. "Last year, I think we were a pretty crummy football team. We were 3-9. We were playing a whole bunch of freshman and sophomores and first-year players. And it really looked that way.

"There were multiple games last year where we didn't just lose – we were basically non-competitive. Then you go to this year. These guys all now have another year under their belt. Now you're sitting here 6-5. You sit there and look at the five losses. In three of the five losses you had double-digit leads. As a matter of fact, none of the games were non-competitive. There was not one game where you didn't have chance to win the game.

"What you've really done is taken these guys who were a bunch of pups and now we're a decent team. I wouldn't say we're anywhere near good, but we're decent. As you look forward to next year, as you've taken a step from three wins to six or seven wins, as you go into next year, you should expect progress to be just as good if not better. You'd have to say you have a chance of being pretty darn good."

As for a direct question about his job status, Weis again demurred.

"The team has a chance of being pretty darn good next year," Weis repeated. "I can't worry about my job status. I'm the head football coach, and that's what I intend to be."

Once again, as Weis indicated, the Irish blew a double-digit lead on Saturday -- this time a 13-point fourth-quarter lead to a Syracuse team that had never come back from a double-digit deficit during Greg Robinson's tenure.

Once again, Weis said fixing that problem is basically wait-and-see.

"We have a lot of young talented athletes that are gaining invaluable experience," Weis said. "We all, media or coaches, can identify that one of the major issues we're dealing with is finishing the game. You would say it and I would say same thing. Where I expect biggest change or biggest uptick is in that quality. Experience is usually the one that puts you over the edge on that one."

Any changes Weis makes in the offseason won't even begin to be formulated until his usual recruiting odyssey in December, following the USC game.

"I'll have plenty of time on the road," Weis said. "You know I spend probably the first three weeks in December on the road. Usually when I'm on road is when I'm away from wife and my kids, so I have a lot more hotel time. That's when I usually start addressing those things."

Weis sounded like a guy who understood the snowballs being hurled from the stands at the end of the game, but he was disappointed that students were tossing them toward the Irish bench even before kickoff.

"I was taken aback about it, to tell you the truth," Weis said. "It caught me a little off guard. They started coming early. Maybe it was meant in fun, at the start of the game, but it's a dangerous thing. It's just something I wish would have been avoided."

Plenty of high-profile recruits witnessed the carnage Saturday -- including linebacker Manti Te'o, the No. 9 prospect in the nation according to Rivals.com -- and this is the message Weis said he imparted afterward.

"You sit there and say, could you have been the difference between us winning and losing? " Weis said. "That's first question you ask them. In a one-point game, most every recruit wiull look at a game lik yesterdayand say, I can see myself being diff between winning and losing.

"All the guys I talked to this morning… the conversation I just had was really same thing I talked to you about: Do you want to come in a crummy year, a decent year or a year that's pretty darn good?"

I dont think Weis is the guy to lead this team, but I also dont have a problem with anything he said.

What did you want him to say? That he sucks and cant motivate his players and he is holding this team back?

Lets not be ridiculous

What do you expect him to say. This is the public appeal of a guy trying to save his job. He was full of it the day he got to SB, and he's still full of it.

Bro, he thinks they're decent. 6-5 against this schedule. We haven't even played a top 20 team. Wait until we play USC. I wonder if he'll still think we're decent after that game.

Again, what do you want him to say? We suck? The players suck? The coaches suck? BRO, be realistic. No one would say that.

I think he's in denial about how many pain pills he takes a day to cover up his knee and at the same time pull a program in the dirt with him.

The USC result will make no difference. Charlie will still say, it was a good year, we made progress. The man stays on message, he does not give real truthful answers.

I would agree with PADOMERNUT, somewhat. No coach is going to say I suck and should be fired. CW responses were what they should have been. Last year was a train wreck, not all was CW fault. This year should have been better than it turned out, decent is not what we strive for at ND and CW knows that. I think realistically 7 - 5 maybe 8 - 4 were the marks people were looking for. 6 - 6 was not it. IF CW learns from the past two years, makes adjustments to his staff and himself he could get back on track.

It is what it is. This team is just not good. Yes they are better than last year, but they are still a bad team. This year at least they have a couple of play makers. Bottom line is they still stink.

I don't have a problem with what he said either and I'm no apologist for Weis....he has a point about us never being in a lot of games last year while we've been mainly competitive this year.

What bugs me a bit is the emphasis on the "double digit leads"....that gets pretty exaggerated IMO. Ten points is a double digit lead, so is ninety-nine (ok, you never see a lead of that amount in football). Being up by 14 points is no guarantee of winning in pretty much any game. Two plays and you can be tied. Hell, I don't even look at a 21 pt lead as a guarantee if there's still a half to play.

Actually we've played 3 teams in the current Top 25 of the BCS with MSU being #18. Yeah, we lost to all 3 (and shouldn't have lost to #25 Pitt), but check yer facts a little before firing away. All I'm sayin'.

Pretty darn good seems about right for next year:

2009 Notre Dame Football Schedule
Sept. 5 NEVADA
Sept. 12 at Michigan
Sept. 19 MICHIGAN STATE
Sept. 26 at Purdue
Oct. 3 WASHINGTON
Oct. 17 USC
Oct. 24 BOSTON COLLEGE
Oct. 31 vs. Washington State (at San Antonio, Texas)
Nov. 7 NAVY
Nov. 14 at Pittsburgh
Nov. 21 CONNECTICUT
Nov. 28 at Stanford

I realize we lost to MSU this year, and for the most part we have sucked the second half of the year, but does anyone imagine us starting off worse than 5-0? I think that Weis does need one more year and that if we fail to win 9 games (including a bowl game), then Weis should possibly be fired, but until then, he has to stay.

I think we will get blown out by USC, but that we can win the Sun Bowl against a mediocre PAC-10 team. 7-6 with a bowl game victory is pretty average, but if you told me that at the beginning of the season, I really wouldn't be too dissapointed. Wouldn't be surprised in the least to see us start off next year at right around #25, and to move into the top 15 or top 10 with a 5-0 start. We're in a pretty shitty situation right now, but I honestly think that firing Weis would set the program back even more. Don't let two bad years here take away from what Weis was able to accomplish with actual upperclassmen starting for him on offense his first two years.

I think that too and after reading this article about these double digit leads I'm starting to think weis just wants to play conservative and he has no cut-throat NASTY attitude. He's changed a lot in the last few years

I'll buy that, but the problem I have is this isn't some damn senior citizen shuffleboard team in south florida who will be together for 10 years and get better as they go.

If certain things start happening next year and even true freshman are not being implemented into the system then weis is a cheat, fraud, and phony.
I thought weis was the best thing since sliced bread when he arrived at notre dame and started winning.Of course who didn't.
I also liked the fact how HE accepted the responsibility more and took the blame. He won't even flinch about taking any blame on anything like what happened saturday now,he has those willingham and davie excuses.
What I didn't like, more so his second year was how mostly starters and seasoned players were playing more and more and in a very small way played a part in the re-building year of last year otherwise it's going to be a continual rollercoaster ad I would like to see notre dame throw out a streak of undeafeted to one-two loss teams for several years in a row.

Maybe one problem with the team and staff is that they care too much and aren't having fun. Who knows.

ND wins next year.

Charlie is a homey. I guarantee he is selling his soul for Notre Dame.

I am still aching for these guys. And my toe. I kicked a wall last night.

This team is at the same point Bama was last year.

By mid-season next year, it's going to be pretty damn clear where this team is headed. Are they like Bama? Or will the coaching staff fail?

Mid-season 2009...that will tell all.

Wow, look at that schedule next year. There really is no excuse for anything less than 11-1. Sure seems unrealistic at this point, but USC is the only game in question from first glance.

And by in question, I mean if this team performs up to its potential. As we have witnessed this season, this too was an 11 win schedule. And the USC streak needs to end. Perhaps I'm putting the cart before the horse a bit this week, but come on.

This year marks the third consecutive year of shitty line play but the nO-line coach, Latina, is still here. What makes you think that he'll learn from this and make adjustments? Latina is a glaring problem that he hasn't bothered to correct yet....I don't see him doing anything about it now either.

Does this mean that he is a coach who can lead Notre Dame back to excellence (or at least beyond mediocrity)? I know he cares and is a tireless worker. But if he isn't getting the job done and isn't realizing his faults along the way...then he isn't fit to be the coach, no matter how much he cares or how hard he tries.

I'm sure you and I both would sell our soul to make Notre Dame what it once was (as would most people here), that doesn't mean that we are the best option for running the football program. I'm sad to say that I don't think Weis is either.

how many games did we have a double digit lead, only to blow it? we could easily be 8-2.

i know, the old "coulda/shoula/woulda" doesn't cut it, but honestly this team's record could be better.

with that being said, i still think this is a decent team. heck, with as many sophomores that we have playing in skilled positions, i expect them to struggle.

next year will be the true indicator as to what impact cw has on this program.

And don't forget the couple of games we held on by the skin of our teeth, otherwise we are staring at 3-8 or 4-7.

After staying away from this board until this morning after the game...I still have the same question as last week. Who are we going to bring into ND that is better the CW? No one wants this job that is an experienced top notch coach! The grade requirements, the unrealistic fan base, and the fire the coach crap that has went on sense Lou's last couple of years after EVERY single loss. Weis should get one more year and if he does not win 9-10 games then it is time to rebuild AGAIN!

I'm ok with that....though I think that if they have a poor year, we'll hear a lot of "but next year they'll be seniors" crap.

Weis is a graduate of Notre Dame and knows the tradition and history well enough.

He should have some decency and walk away on his own.

I can't believe this is where we are at but we have finally hit rock bottom.

Is this post for real? 5-0? What on Earth would lead you to this conclusion? Nevada just played within 7 of Boise State. Boise State would likely beat us by 21. Michigan is a toss-up and I fully expect Michigan State to beat us. What team have you been watching the last 2 years?

Oh, we can beat a mediocre Pac-10 team on a neutral site? Because I just saw us get beat by an ATROCIOUS Big East team at home. We barely survived Navy and San Diego Freaking State. I mean, how could you possibly have made this post?

I am at a loss for some of the lemmings around here. It is one thing to hope for the best, but it is another entirely to divorce yourself from reality.

Look in the mirror pal. Your hatred for all things Jimmy Clausen (and all things ND it seems) has caused you to say some of the stupidest things I've read on this board. If that guy is a lemming, then you are a markmay. I'd rather be a lemming than a complete a**hole.

It goes both ways 'pal'...

Listen, PAL, shove it up your hole. I don't HATE Jimmy Clausen, I'm just not enamored with his VERY MEDIOCRE play. And I don't hate Notre Dame, I just won't settle for mediocrity like you. And damn right I blasted the above post. It is so ridiculous I can't even believe 15 posters let it slide without attacking it. Anybody who would even jokingly predict 11 wins after the 2 seasons we have just had is either a mindless lemming or a serious drug addict.
