Post Game Observations Stanford '14

My Observations:

1. Defense was crazy. Smith seemed like he was in on every tackle. 2 things that scared me. On Stanford's last TD, everyone in the stadium knew they were going to run and play for the FG, or they should have. And the all out blitz on the last play of the game was a HUGE gamble.

2. Golson made the play when he needed to or he would be lit up all over this board as the reason we lost the game.

3. Offensive play calling was complete $hit. Passed on 1st down at least 60-70% of the time and then ran on 2nd and long almost 100% of the time. Too many 3rd and long situations.

4. Too much Cam McDaniel. I'm actually a huge supporter of playing Bryant much more, but Folstan looked like the complete back today.

5. Kickers practice on the sideline. Do Holders? I don't think that kid has any other job on the team so he should be taking snaps as soon as they cross the 50

1. Golson looked pretty bad tonight. Hopefully, this was his one bad game for the year. He was late on a bunch of throws; most noticeably was the pass to Will Fuller in the end zone, where the Stanford safety got over and blew the play up. He was also late on the winning TD to Koyack, but obviously got away with it. He had yet another 2 TO game. He's starting to look like Tommy, in that respect. He also looked unsure about whether or not to take off running, off of his scrambles. That's probably a function of the coaching staff trying to keep him thinking pass-first, though.

2. I'm pretty sure, now, that this defense is for real. I don't think it is dominant, but it is damned good.

3. Stanford's offensive line was handling most of our blitzes very well. We did through often enough to keep them out of any rhythm, but they picked us up as often as they didn't. I'm not sure if that is because their line is that good, or if we just aren't disguising pressures very well.

4. Jaylon Smith is already an outstanding football player, and might end up a phenomenal football player, before he leaves South Bend.

5. This is starting to have the feel of 2012; a couple of unimpressive wins against teams that we should have blown out in the 1st quarter, a close game against a really good team, and while we think we are really good, no one is really sure. It's like you are waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Game ball goes to the entire defense. They kept picking up the offense, even when they could have quit. One of the touchdowns they gave up was on a 12 yard drive.

Perfect post. Agree.

Elmer needs to be replaced now, its past laughable. Replacement needs a game before fsu. Put him on the other side atleast or something

got the W...

pretty good game in awful conditions against a real good Stanford team, however given Stanford got 7 handed to them and then ND throws a red zone pick and flubs 2 field goals...this thing never should have been in doubt...

Defense was fun to watch. Farley needs some help in coverage but I still think he's been really good this year.

Offensive line needs to get in a room together, make some commitments, and start holding each other accountable. I can understand with young oline folks, that when the tally of wins and losses is done for the day, and you come out on the L side. Happens. But when you don't even get out of your stance MULTIPLE times, and you are USED as a BAG to plug holes, and tackle YOUR running backs...thats just pride...JUST BAAAAAD. There were some good runs, but they seemed to end up on the perimeter, which means the back bounced, or it was designed out there. Cam McDaniel made his own yards today on plays designed to be between the tackles.

Receivers...tough day, but come on. Can not let themselves off the hook for that many drops because it rained...gotta have more...more focus...more grit...more execution.

DR E.G. and Mr. Golson...nice job bringing it together, only thing I could say is From Stanford's 30 and in , I'd have loved to see him pull it down and run a little more...seemed like he had the corner on a couple...but it didn't turn into anything. I get the idea of keeping eyes down the field, but if everyone is running intermediate and deep routes on the side you escape to...and you get the corner...uhm, take the yards.

Brian Kelly called a horrible football game.
Our offensive line will not work without Hanratty in the game. He is one of the toughest guys on the team.
If Brian Kelly leaves this program, BVG gets hired immediately. I have such a man crush on him.
Finally, David Shaw is such a swollen vagina. I'm so thrilled we came out on top.

I also thought his play calling was suspect.

Happy for the win.

I felt Golson just didn't have it tonight. He barely made the throw to Koyack, who had been open forever. Late passes, dropped balls, and missed FG's. Should have been 30 dropped on the Trees. However, just very confident with the D. They were dominant tonight.

Yes, Shaw is a swollen vagina!

I also want to note the huge gut check by Hunter Smith, the holder. I know he mishandled two and that hurt. But imagining his nerves and concern after missing those two, then he has Kelly in his ear after the second one, and he goes out and handles the tie breaker cleanly, under that pressure?? That shows character and should be noticed.

I can only speculate, but Cam is solid in all conditions-CK needed someone he could completely trust in this game.

I noticed gloves on the third attempt too. Lets not overlook the gloves.

I live abroad and missed the whole game ;-(. Summaries (even brief) are appreciated!

1Q
ND had some OL miscommunication and incomplete passes to start.
SU had 3 False Starts and incomplete passes to start.
On their 4th drive SU drove down the field to ND's 43 then Hogan threw an a long pass down the ND sideline INTERCEPTED inside the 10 by Luke.
Golson ran on first down for a couple yds and fumbled. Recovered by SU.
On second play Hogan sold a pass then ran into the ND EZ for the score. SU 7-0
They traded 3 and outs. Then Golson hit Brown for 20 yds to close the 1Q. Folston had a great block picking up a blitzer.

2Q
Procise ran for 26 on an end around and a personal foul took it down to the 11.
Golson feeling pressure ran left extending the play then threw to a WR at the left corner of the goal line. Defender stepped in front for the INT at the SU 2.
SU went 3 and out.
ND started inside SU 40 and drove to SU 24. Drive stalled. On 41 yd FG attempt the holder who everyone knows now, Hunter Smith, mishandled the snap for a missed FG.
SU then drove to ND 24. Onwualu had a big stick on one of the running plays. Drive stalled and SU tried a FG. Snap was over the kicker's head. ND's ball on downs at ND 38.
ON the first play Folston had a nice run but there was a question about a fumble. Replay didn't show any fumble. After a couple of inc. passes Golston ripped off 33 yds on a QB draw. He had both arms wrapped around the ball like a fullback when tackled.
Golson then hit Chris Brown on a crossing route just over the LOS for a 17 TD. 7-7
They then traded 3 and outs to close the half.

3Q
ND drove into SU territory and punted.
SU got a couple of 1st downs then BVG showed pressure from the strongside while Trumbetti streaked in from the weakside for sack. After a couple of incompletions, Tranquil got his hand on the punt but the ball rolled to ND 37.
ND got a first down than Brindza punted to SU 13.
ND forced another 3 and out.
ND got a first down but the drive stalled after Golson was tackled for a sack. Actually, Golson ran trying to split two rushers being blocked but was knocked down by Elmer being pushed back into him. The SU defender backed up Elmer up like he was a HS OL. Brindza punted to SU 15.
SU ran two plays to end the 3Q tied at 7.

4Q
On the first play of the quarter, Luke dove in front of a receiver for an INT inside SU 40.
ND drive stalled at SU 10. ND went for FG but another mishandled snap lead to Brindza kicking the ball out of both of the holder's hands. SU returned the block to their 44.
BVG's boys held SU to another 3 and out.
ND started at their 20 and mixed runs and passes to Robinson to drive to SU 28. Brindza was sent out for a FG and this time the holder, Hunter Smith was wearing GLOVES. 45 FG GOOD for the 10-7 lead.
Montgomery ripped off a 40 yd kickoff return. SU mixed runs and passes for a first and goal at the 10. After 2 runs for the loss of a yd, ND split the safeties wide leaving the middle open. SU ran up the gut as their OLine put on a clinic of getting to the second level and taking out the LBs. RB went 11 yds untouched for the TD. SU 14-ND 10 with 3 minutes to play.
SU kicked off out of bounds giving ND the ball at the 35. Golson then moved the team down the field throwing to different receivers. Fuller picked up 11. Robinson 17. Fuller then forced a Pass Interference for a first down at the 22. ND had a 3 and 7 when Golson standing in the middle of the pocket saw Koyack wide open in the left front corner of the end zone. Golson moved left, I believe to prevent a blocked pass by the onrushing defenders and neatly hit Koyack for the game winning score. ND 17-14 with a minute to play.
Brindza buried the kickoff out the back of the end zone where it was cleanly fielded by the bank leader in a raincoat.
ND gave up a couple of short passes in a prevent defense. The game ended with SU at midfield.

Cam is the most decisive back and best pass blocker. He's also deceptively strong and breaks a lot of tackles. My humble opinion is that he was the best back to use against the Stanford D

Amen. "It's not good when the holder is on TV." And he got quit a bit of TV. He did have gloves the last time he went out but he had the label of goat on his head when he took that third snap. It was still cold, rainy and windy. Definitely and intestinal fortitude moment.

Kudos to whoever thought of the gloves be it Kelly, another coach, or manager, or ...

Kudos as well to Brindza who had a tough stat night because of the mishandled snaps. Brindza was credited withtwo misses. His 45 yd game winner was solid as was his punting that kept them deep in their end and he buried that last K.O. to the band leader.

BTW, kmoose will be back later. He went to a gamewatch and was hoping to get lucky. We all did to some extent but I suspect he was hoping to get even luckier.

What time he logs on might reflect just how lucky he was.

Golson has gotten into a very bad habit of floating to his left when no one's immediately open.

Decreases accuracy and slows his running since he has to square his shoulders afterward.

I hope Coach notices this and corrects him.

Not a very inleligent thought here but Elmer looks just as bad at guard. I've never seen an inside lineman standing as much as he was.

Great game. But I will be a debbie downer. Hegarty got abused all night. It was bad.

I'm really glad Kelly didn't give up on the run. It may not have shown, but I think it was added value.

I'm not trying to argue. He got beat ... a lot but I don't recall that he got manhandled like Elmer did on the Golson "sack" when Elmer was pushed back into him. Hegarty's man seemed to frequently beat him with speed. Maybe that's just my perception.

He needs to get much better.

I'm not sure that's the reason. He waggled left on both the INT in the front corner of the end zone and on the TD to Koyack. On both those plays he appeared to be going through progressions, spots the open man, THROUGH tjhe on incoming pass rush. He did have passes battered down over the middle. I was wondering if he was stepping out to the left to get a passing lane to the his open man on the left. On the INT stepping left gave the defender time to cut in front as it gave the defender time to recover with Koyack but no enough there to matter. On both of those plays Golson's height and vision might be the cause of the left movement.

I'd have to watch the game again to see how often he stepped to the left.

OMM alluded to this before, but the table is set for Golson to be great or even a Heisman contender, he seems to not quite be ready emotionally?? Maturity wise?? I don't know. He is plenty good and he pulled it out when it was on the line, but this game should not have been close, we were significantly better than them. We spent the first half on their side of the field and only got 7. When he is ready to be a dominant player we will win a championship.

Defense was incredible. Joe Schmidt, Cole Luke, Sheldon Day, Jaylon Smith, Andrew Trumbetti, and Cody Riggs were exceptional. Devin Butler also is a gamer. BVG gets a game ball.

Way too many drops by the receivers, that is not ok under any conditions.

Steve Elmer is too talented to be struggling like he is, I think he needs some continuity and plenty of reps.

Kyle Brindza deserves a lot of credit for the way he struck the football after the two botched snaps. He maintained his focus and trusted in his holder and hit the game deciding 45 yarder.

Plenty of things to coach, but we are a really good football team and that is on these young men, the captains, the coaches and ultimately Coach Kelly. Great job by all given the crazy drama that has been slowly unfolding throughout the beginning of this season.
