Of all the analysts out there, Herbie is the most pleasant to listen to, no question. I have two main gripes with Herbie:
--Since he covers EVERYBODY, he has to be totally neutral all the time. You just can't be a great analyst when you are trying so hard to be politically correct. (This is one thing I like about Mayock ... at least you know where he stands on stuff.)
--When he is doing a game, his knowledge of the teams is a little superficial sometimes, again I think because he covers EVERYBODY.
I would prefer that ESPN use him as a studio analyst or a color commentator, but not both. The preparation for the two roles should be a little bit different -- breadth is key for a studio guy, but depth is key for a color commentator.
Don't get me wrong, Herbie generally does a good job. But something like this ND OPI nonsense shows his weaknesses.
