Position Changes for Next Year

Looking at our incoming recruits, and our existing depth chart, I started thinking about what position changes we might see next year. I'm curious if any of you have any thoughts on some new positions. Here are some I could see:

George Atkinson moving to Free Safety. I think we're thin there and with Theo looking pretty decent at RB, Roberson potentially back and two pretty impressive looking recruits it might be nice to use him as a PR, KR and FS. Didn't he play that position in the Army All American game and do a really nice job?

Massa moves back to QB with Crist's transfer and Kiel not coming we're going to need another guy who can pass.

Nick Martin moves inside to guard. I wouldn't be surprised for him to grab the spot TRob vacates.

Any other thoughts?

I seem to recall GAIII struggling a bit at FS in that All-American game and there being talk about how that wouldn't be his collegiate position. Depending on this year's final commits, I'd think about moving him back to WR.

How bout Teo at some fullback-short yardage-I think he was a good RB in Hawaii. Stanford did it!

Roberson and Mahone are both big backs. I'd prefer that one of them get the opportunity, instead of exposing our best defender to the chicanery that goes on at the bottom of a pile.

Not a fan of the first two at all... George struggled on d to some extent in that all star game and has shown he is great with the ball in his hands. And i cant see how moving Massa to QB helps anything, it's not like he would ever play.

Agree. However, this big back role is a significant concern of mine, with Mahone being a true freshman and Roberson coming off the knee injury. I surely hope one of them is able to do a good portion of what Jonas did for us this year.

even with lynch, moore, tuit, hounshell, and kona already there?

he just may grow out of his LB position. Came in at 250 and he's still a leaner looking player. Some teams were even recruiting him as a OT because many think he could gain a large amount of weight to his frame. Basically, he's still got 3 more years with Longo. He'll outgrow his position.

I stood side by side with troy and he is far from lean. I will give you that he has no body fat, but the kids got some guns on him. I think he stays at OLB and plays in between 255-260 for the duration of his career. He is a physical specimen..no need to bulk him up to play DE. He can still put on another 10 lbs of good weight and stay at OLB.

Also, no way in hell GA3 moves to defense...aint gonna happen, and wont even be considered. Did you not watch him return kicks this year and see how dangerous he is with the ball in his hands???

If anything I can see Tuitt getting more reps inside to spell nix, but I dont see any major positional changes coming..maybe some guys moving from corner to safety etc, but nothing drastic.

I do despise how Rees plays, but I am serious on the punting thing. Turk is 1st, Kyle is 2nd, and then Tommy has a spot at 3rd, and 3rd QB.

Assuming anyone's actually trying to make this a serious thread:

1). Riddick seems moving back to RB [surprising to me as he is a lot like Cierre and not like Jonas], so that creates a logjam there. That would indicate staff seriously considering moving GAIII back to receiver and CamMc to slot. This would still leave us with Wood, Riddick, Roberson [if healthy], Mahone, and Russell. If Roberson can't really go, and if Russell looks more receiver/slot than RB, then GAIII or CamMc come back to RB.

2). Linemen are apparently shifting due to the quality of underclassman tackles. We seem to know that Hegarty will go to Center. He probably will cross-train a little at Guard as Warriner seems to like Guard/Center flexibility. Hanratty will probably do the same, as will Harrell. ZMartin dominates LT, but RT needs a player. Lombard was back-up this year, but we have Prestwood, Nichols, incoming Decker, and Stanley who all look like straight-out tackles. Lombard, originally thought of as a guard, might go back there. NMartin is primed for a possible starting job, too, and he was LT last year--- so that would have to change. I know you guys have little interest in O-Linemen, but stability of positioning there is a very big deal or nothing works offensively at all.

3). Should Riddick really move out of slot, who backs up Toma?? Whoever it is will be a change unless it's Farley [who might go back to DB depending how athletic we really look there]. Does TJ move? I don't see it. Does CamMc go there? Could easily see that. GAIII? Russell? A big talent like CBrown?

4). What happens at NT behind Nix? I am not even sure that Cwynar is coming back, although I believe that to be a very good idea. After Cave and Slaughter, and KLM, Sean is the next man on the list if the recruiting success rate would really get out of hand late. Plus Sean is already a graduate student, I believe. Whose getting the back-up [really in our substitution pattern, sharing] time? This is even more of a conundrum when considering how much we're in four down. Is Springmann ready for any of this? Or does Schwenke move there semi-permanently? Does Tuitt become a de facto DT? Do we make do with the rooks [Day, Jones]?

5). Linebackers will shift all over the place, in my opinion, except Te'o. Some shifting will just be disappearing down the depth chart, but some will be major. Shembo seems gone from the Dog. Where will he be? He's too good not to have on the field, so that means Cat or Will. [unless you want to make him an undersized but nevertheless effective DE]. Where does Rabasa end up? He's very similar to Shembo in the sense of where he might play. Do we "waste" Grace for a year sitting watching Te'o, or do we get him on the field? Where does Niklas fit? ( We have Lynch, Tuitt, KLM, Hounshell, and maybe Schwenke, as proven talents at DE --- and Jones and Okwara coming ). Where's he go?

Look at the LB situation: Te'o, IWiliams, Councell, Shembo, Fox, Spond, Grace, Moore, Rabasa [probably], Calabreese, ... and Niklas. Who do you want on the field? Can you pick your four favorites, and fit them into positions which actually work? By the way this doesn't even include the Slaughter at Dog option, and before you say "No No", the staff is saying that it really likes the idea.

My opinion is worth less than the electrons needed to send it, but I'll give it anyway.

A). Obviously I want Te'o on the field for as long as he can handle it physically. But I want to give him some breathers too.

B). When Slaughter's not playing a hybrid DB/Dog, I want speed there and no messing around. That means Councell. I have no idea whether anyone else on this team can actually play the position.

C). At Cat-Crash Fever, it has to be IWiliams, if he can think it out, and someone else big, mean, fast, and athletic. Is that Niklas or is that Shembo?

D). That leaves Will. If it's Niklas at Cat, then it should be Shembo at Will to get my best athletes on the field. I'd like whoever it is to share time with Grace, unless Diaco is willing to give Te'o more rest. Grace needs playing time. If he's getting some even behind Te'o, and Dan Fox continues to improve in pass coverage [which the staff thinks he's doing], maybe it's Fox who shares Will with Shembo. Could Niklas be Will instead, and The Prince go to his natural position at Cat? That would be even nicer if Niklas turned out to be instinctively good at it.

That LB array would be: IWiliams/ Shembo; Niklas/ Fox; Te'o/ Grace; Councell/ Spond, & Slaughter in our speciality defense. That should be controversial enough.

6). DBs: I would not be surprised to see some positional shifting among players like Jalen Brown and Eiler Hardy who are real talents, and, given the tremendous uncertainty in the D-Backfield, might be flipped CB/S to get some kind of adequate set of talents on the field.

There: I've said it and I'm glad.

Farley is a slot WR and who knows how he pans out. I think it's a lock that Massa switches back to QB in case of transfer (unless we land another QB this cycle) and either he or Brian Clearly is gonna run the scout team.

I don't see any scenario where GAIII moves to safety... but I am interested to see what role he plays moving forward.

Nick Martin is going to be interesting to watch. I have no idea where he necessarily ends up. when the pieces stop moving.

The only position change I'm sure of is mine. I'm moving to a different spot on the couch.

GAIII at slot would be awesome with speed and field vision. I read Niklas could be moved to tight end if eifert leaves, but with his speed he could be special on defense. Oh and I need my mommy Tommy should think about assistant to the trainer of the punters.

Kendall Moore? He always seems to hit somebody hard, why doesn't he get any playing time.

IMO, LBs should be Niklas at the Dog, Shembo at Cat with Ishaq getting a lot of reps here as well.
Kendall Moore at the Will and then Manti. Kendall Moore is a playmaker and needs to be on the field. Niklas is athletic enough to play the dog, and will actually become a pretty good cover guy with experience from what I have seen of him so far.

Cwynar is listed as a JR, on the roster at und.com. That's his academic standing.

Cam McDaniel to slot receiver? Seriously? That's not a sarcastic seriously, I just have never heard of a "bigger" running back moving to wideout. And he's only 5'10", not the size you would like a "project" type receiver to have. Has there been serious talk of moving McDaniel?

Cam McDaniel is our smaller freshmen RB. You are thinking of the bigger Cam Roberson.

Also I believe Cwynar is a RS JR.
