And if you're a government worker, and you're having those convos of being "essential"...How do you like government telling you your worth?

Just like with the health care bill, and wanting to take over the 401k market...it's about CONTROL.

They know what's best for us. So sit down and shut up and turn on MSNBC/Fox and be afraid.

Back in the day the fellows in Washington worked for free because it was considered to be public service.

Let's make the salaries $40k and see who signs up. No more career politicians becoming millionaires (somehow) like John McCain and Harry Reid.

I agree with the sentiment here, but nearly all of these politicians are rich before they get into office. I think if you stripped the salaries away from these political positions, people would still fight to keep their seats -- but that has very little to do with public service for most of them. Some of them serve a little time and use the cache of being a former Congressman as leverage for some high-paying gig with a lobbying firm and some become so drunk with power that can't pull themselves away from it. It is a sad state of affairs that knows no party lines.

I don't know about Harry Reid, but John McCain married a fabulously wealthy woman whose family has the corner of the market on beer distribution is western states.

This whole essential/non-essential thing really strikes me… why the hell, if the cupboard is so entirely bare as Pelosi and Co. suggests, do we have such an apparently apocalyptic amount of "non-essential" tax payer supported entities within the government?? Talk about having your cake and eating too on this issue.

More posturing.

Again, there are Billions of dollars in waste that we can cut...but we want the people to feel it as to make them pay for govenrment mistakes and waste.

So did John Kerry. He was a highly decorated Navy officer during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970. During his service he received several combat medals, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts.

Later in life, he met the Queen of Ketshup and married into a substantial fortune.

Many of their net worth benefit from the fact that they are allowed to trade on insider information. Studies have shown that the returns they earn on their investments are vastly superior to those of star money fund managers.

Essential is defined more or less by Life Safety. This doesn't mean they aren't essential for some other reason.

For example: If you shut down the entire DOD we potentially have a huge problem. If you just shut down the DOD research programs life goes on for now.

Have always wondered why it's ok to run the government in a deficit mode...when you and I do it it's called bankruptcy. We give up nice to haves everyday around my home. complete mystery to my simple mind.

Washington Monument Syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Washington Monument syndrome, also known as the Mount Rushmore Syndrome,[1] or the firemen first principle,[2][3] is a political tactic used in the United States by government agencies when faced with budget cuts. The tactic entails cutting the most visible or appreciated service provided by the government, from popular services such as national parks and libraries[1] to valued public employees such as teachers and firefighters.[2] This is done to gain support for tax increases that the public would otherwise be against. The name derives from the National Park Service's alleged habit of saying that any cuts would lead to an immediate closure of the wildly popular Washington Monument.[4] The National Review compare the tactic to hostage taking or blackmail.[5]

I'm just happy the NSA can keep spying on all of us while those bastards at national parks and service academy football teams can't work! Good job!

This is so childish by the Tea Party Republicans, and there is no way it will help them accomplish anything.

Read only 6 or 7 posts and remember why I have stayed away from this thread.... Holy cow. Can we abolish both parties and create the common sense party.

Doubtful. One side is trying to preserve a constitutional republic and the other is "fundamentally transforming" America into a centralized power nanny state.

On the Monday, September 30, The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, substitute host Alex Wagner read a tweet written by guest Bruce Bartlett in which the former George H.W. Bush administration official expressed hope that the Tea Party would soon "die a well-deserved death."

After Bartlett referred to "Tea Party clowns" as he hoped that Republican leaders would manage to "put them down or limit their influence," Wagner expresed her approval of her guest calling Tea Party Republicans "clowns" as she began her response:

Bruce refers to the "Tea Party clowns," and I think a lot of people would agree with that designation...

Wagner had raised Bartlett's tweet:

Bruce, you sounded a note of hope in the wilderness earlier tonight. You tweeted: "There's a slight possibility that Boehner is a genius and the Tea Party will die a well-deserved death in the next few days. Fingers-crossed."

Lots of fingers crossed on that. Can you explain your thesis there?

Bartlett began:

Well, it was based on a report by Byron York in the Examiner, and Byron is very, very well-connected on the right side of the Republican party, and he was saying basically that there's really only 30 members who are really, really dug in on this anti-Affordable Care Act position and absolutely refuse compromise. And he said there's 175 who will instantly vote for a clean continuing resolution if they are simply given the freedom to cast that vote.

He continued:

And, as yet, they have not been given that freedom. And I think -- my thinking was that Boehner is waiting for the public opinion, for Wall Street, for the other players in the Republican party to finally read the riot act to these Tea Party clowns and maybe put them down or limit their influence in the Republican party to where we can have a meaningful governing coalition.

Before reading a quote from former Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott criticizing the Tea Party, Wagner began her response:

Bruce refers to the "Tea Party clowns," and I think a lot of people would agree with that designation, but the question is, where, what happens at the end of this in terms of national standing? And, in particular, I want to focus on Ted Cruz because David Corn of Mother Jones interviewed former Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, and Trent Lott said this about the Tea Party wing of the GOP...

It's funny that both are doing the latter now. No one's actually doing the first one, stop kidding yourself if you really think that.

I don't think the ACA is a good thing, but the GOP isn't doing itself any favors by trying to roadblock it. They should step aside, let it unfurl, and allow the Dems to own it. If the ACA makes things better, well, then just say "good for you" and move onto other issues (this country has more than a few that need attention). If, on the other hand, the ACA turns into a big mess, then the GOP can step up and say "we told you so, now let's try things our way." Republicans are focusing too hard on this one battle that they risk losing the war.

So it's an "unfair burden" for a voter to figure out how to obtain ID-- but the same voter is REQUIRED to figure out Obamacare.
