It’s a numbers game. There is no room at the inn based on current projections.

They are assuming the PAC, B1G, B12, and SEC champs are all locks, and then you have the possibility of an undefeated FSU to really create some chaos

Agreed …Well still a 4 team format - you would have ND get a bud and negate a representative team from one of SEC, B1G, Pac12, ACC? It’s not happening. That’s why the expanded playoffs next year guarantee those seats. Therefore there is little chance ND gets a bid this year unless they really start out performing with blow outs.

I think all of the following would need to happen:

PAC champ is two loss USC

B1G champ is undefeated OSU, and they depants Michigan on their way to the conference title

Florida State somehow loses two games

Georgia runs the table


I’m honesty not sure if they would allow 11-1 ND in over 12-1 USC. There would be a healthy debate at the very least.


*This is all purely hypothetical, because we are assuming a team that just limped across the finish line against Duke is up to winning 11 games.

I’m not saying it’s a forgone conclusion, but the odds are at least one of PAC, BIG, ACC, SEC implodes somehow. Lots of big matches are about to be played these upcoming weeks.

Definitely greater than a 23% chance if we go 11-1. I said 50-60% a few days ago, and then stumbled across this tweet today.



Bear in mind, too, quality of loss, deficit of loss, and recency to postseason all matter to the committee. It’s not at all unreasonable that a 11-1 ND with a last second loss to OSU early in the season might get the nod over just one of the conferences, especially if the loss is worse/to an unranked and closer to the end of the season.

If 11-1 Notre Dame defeated 12-1 USC, I’d like our chances. Otherwise why even play the games?

The Committee has respected head-to-head results pretty consistently. I think 11-1 ND gets in over 12-1 USC, but tough to say because that would mean USC beat some really good teams down the stretch

We’d be in over USC in that scenario. It’s not like they need to appease the PAC-12
