Does State Penn have a school of journalism? That was like a lynch mob in there. Seemed a tad unprofessional to me. Lots of emotions raging in there.

This is just unfathomable. On all accounts.
But, as easy as it is to say we'd do "the right thing" if we were in Paterno's shoes, how do we really know? Hindsight is 20/20 and we all enjoy believing we'd crack the skull of Sandusky if we caught him and definitely, immediately call in the 5-0 if we were JoePa...but would you really? If it came down to it and you were actually in Joe's shoes, who knows how you'd react.
It's really easy to play "armchair QB" in this time...

Unfortunate that this is how such an incredible career and classy man ends. Always had great respect for Joe Pa, and still do. Obviously the incident is horrific, but its easy for us to say what we would've done. He is still a, if not the legend of college football.

You do have to take into account that Sandusky was a friend and fellow coach of Paterno for many years, even played underneath him. After knowing someone for so long, wouldn't it be your first instinct to talk with other people that you know before going to the cops, to see if they believe it? And if they were to say "we'll handle it", then would you believe that they did?
Everything up to that point is believable. No follow up and permitting him to continue to visit the campus? Inadmissible. As a PSU fan trying to look at it through his side, still doesn't make sense.

I NEVER want to hear anyone ever say again that something is impossible....because we have seen the impossible happen tonight. Who in their right mind before a couple days ago could've ever imagine Joe Paterno being fired? I would've laughed at anyone saying that before this situation. It's something that had to be done...but it is a sad day for college football.

I can say without hesitation, if I were in Paterno's shoes, Sandusky would have been severly injured and /or arrested the day I found out about that disgusting $hit.

It's good to have perspective, I agree, but read the indictment, if you can make it all the way through (I couldn't) and tell me you'd witness that, and then merely slink off to daddy to parlay about what you should do next. I don't say this with a boasting air, but I bet 98% of the people on this site would call the heat immediately, right after screaming at that predator to stop. We haven't gotten to the bottom of this yet -- this piece of trash has had a line of foster kids staying at his house over the past twenty years.....He'll be on suicide watch soon.

I was replying to the part of the post about not judging and about not assuming each of us would have acted if we had witnessed the crime. As I read it again, you're right, he's saying we wouldn't have acted differently than Paterno did. I still think most of us would have -- at least wondered why the guy was still hanging around, after he'd reported, and said "Either you go to the cops or I do." Sounds like Paterno himself thinks so now.

They need to give Sandusky life in prison, then put him with the general population. They will take care of him good.....like Jeffery Dahmer.

Those of you saying you'd break "Joe's" (insert bone here) really are seemingly angrier at McQueary. He's the GA who actually SAW something and walked out of the locker room. He's the one who gave Paterno his account of what happened. Paterno followed the chain of command. Should he have broken chain of command and called the police? Yes. We can all clearly say that. It's an easy answer for us.
Empathy is not easy. Putting yourself in someone else's shoes is not easy. As a 24 year old, trying to gauge how an 80 year old man wrapped his head around this hellacious situation is unfathomable. My main sentiment is that we all know Joe Paterno did the wrong thing. But, villifying him isn't the answer. Joe himself knows he should have reacted differently. It's an easy decision in hindsight. I pray that myself and all of you, here, never have to face a situation like this...because the simple fact is NONE of us really know how we'd react.
