Having lived in Ohio all my life I try hard not to hate on Ohio State, especially since my wife's family are all big fans. I try to look at Ohio State as a friend, because the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I also have been semi-regular at BuckeyePlanet since they invited Notre Dame fans over for the Fiesta Bowl several years ago.
On the other hand, I find that many Ohio State fans have some sort of unnatural and seemingly unnecessary hatred towards Notre Dame fans, and I cannot understand why. Some claim it's media bias and self entitlement over the NBC contract, others claim it's Notre Dame's snub to joining the Big 10, still others will claim we take recruits from their state. I've heard some other reasons over the years, but they're all just silly. For starters, the NBC deal ain't all that sweet in the modern age with the new networks popping up lately. The recruiting angle is absurd as many of the players that come out of Ohio often come from the Catholic high schools there or areas like Cinci that were never strong Ohio State recruiting locations. The snub to the Big 10...really? We've been Independant forever, did you really think Notre Dame is going to go from being a national face and playing all over the country so we can localize ourselves to just the midwest? It doesn't make sense from a business perspective, and until those dynamics change we'll continue to be Independant for as long as possible I imagine.
The whole Notre Dame to Big 10 argument is just silly to begin with. I often see Ohio State fans state that thier Big 10 brothers should just quit scheduling Notre Dame all together and force them to join the Big 10 for such privileges. Yeah, cause picking up another Big 10 school like Indiana or a MAC would be so much more profitable for Purdue, Michigan State, and Michigan. Don't get me wrong, I love playing these old rivalries (As much as I've despised the string of Michigan State wins and recent last second heroics of Michigan). On the other hand, if the Big 10 banded together and refused to schedule Notre Dame unless they joined, I don't think it would be too hard to find opponents. If you take in account that most of our Big 10 games come at the beginning of the season we would probably have little difficulty picking up decent replacements given that most teams are playing non-conference teams anyway in September.
