We had 5 turnovers on D with numerous being on their side of the field and scored 35 points

We don’t need much else other than a QB who can be average to good in order to make a deep run into the playoffs. We have an elite D

Someone in one of the other threads this week said they saw Onye walking into the Gug recently, which would suggest he is in fact "with the team," at least in body if not spirit.
The way Freeman has talked about it would suggest something personal or mental health-related, but also Freeman is very good at euphemisms. Trying to remember if we've had anyone else "suspended" during his time as HC, and how he's discussed it.
Either way, at this point I wouldn't figure Onye plays again this season, and like you say the portal will probably tell the story here. Hopefully he comes back.
