What's the difference between UMASS and San Jose State? Not much, I guarantee you that. In fact, I bet UMASS would beat San Jose St. And USC played San Jose State twice this past decade, both at home (San Jose St was 2-10 the last time USC beat them 56-3 in 2009). How about Idaho? USC played them as well, and Idaho went 1-11 the year that the #1 Trogans played them (at home). U$C plays Utah State next year. When they scheduled that game, Utah State was coming off a 3-9 pathetic season. (Who knows what Umass will be like in 3 years?)

So yes, USC has definitely dumbed down their schedule for the sake of playing patsies. But like us, they won't play FCS teams...

My bad LA...I hadn't realized Southern Cal had started playing patsies the past few years. I had thought they dropped Idaho, though, but I haven't checked that.

Did the 1988 team win it on the field?

Rice. 0-11. Championship.

#1 Miami, #2 Michigan, #3 West Virginia, #7 Penn State. Does our 2015 schedule have that, we'll see, but I didn't bother watching the Rice drubbing of '88....just wasn't interested, as I'm not interested in watching UMASS coming to South Bend. That may be fine with you, I'm not a fan of it in any way shape or form.

Call it pompous, call it arrogant, hell, call it whatever you want.....as a fan, I've got no interest in watching ND play UMASS, Akron, Tulsa, Western Michigan, or any other no name directional state school that's out there. It used to **** me off to no end when Nebraska started doing this in the 90's and beating schools 72-3....its just not good for college football, and we can agree to disagree on that.

You obviously don't follow Nebraska football. For DECADES they played in the Big 8 which was derogatively known as the Big 2. There was Oklahoma, Nebraska, and the Six Dwarfs. KU and KSU were the two worse teams in Div 1. The bottom feeders of the bottom feeders, OK St was nowhere til Boone Pickens started poring in his millions. Colorado had a burst around 1990 under McCartney, then his daughter got pregnant and the NCAA sent the Buff program back to the Dark Ages they knew well. Mizzou? Iowa St? Please!

Hitorically, the Big 8 was a bigger joke that the ACC when FSU tore through it in the 90's. Oklahoma, Nebraska, and NOBODY.

Now throw in those exciting games against Utah St, Hawaii,

Devaney and Osborne made careerd of playing soft schedules. Feel free to refresh my memory when the Huskers scheduled Southern Cal, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, FSU, Alabama, Texas, LSU, Tennessee, and Notre Dame and I'm not talking about a home and home every 40 or 50 years.

When Nebraska went into the Big 12 and suddenly had to face 3 or 4 real opponents in a seasons there record suffered. Since joining the Big 12 Nebraska has 1 NC '97, won 2 Conference Championships '97 the NC season and '99 (when they were also North Division CO-Champs). They've won the North Divison 7 times and 3 of those were as CO-Champs.

In their last NC season '97 they opened the season with a 59-14 win over Akron and followed with a win over Central Florida. A look at their other NC seasons shows similar scheduling regardless of the decade.

Your argument in this thread is weak but bringing up Nebraska actually proves the point the others make about Championship Scheduling.

I'm not trying to make an argument, BGIF, I'm stating, that I, as a fan have no interest in watching ND play patsies. You may be fine with, I however, have a great disdain for scheduling these lesser D1 schools. I just don't care to watch these games. I don't care what other schools have/are doing, they're not ND, and I damn for sure don't much care how they schedule. Its funny that many fans don't want any part of being in a conferance for football, but have no problem with trying to schedule a way in to the BCS just because "everybody else does it". Does ND let their players skip classes, or water their class schedules down? The answer is no. ND is diffarent, right?? Then if we are diffarent, we should act like it in every sense of the game.

Everybody can disagree with me, and I'm perfectly fine with that, I'm not going to change my opinion.

I think your opinion is fine OC...I think the reasons for stating it in a few of your other posts were what got some people (read: me) going.

I can totally see your point about not wanting to see ND play UMASS. I have often wondered how boring it must be for UF fans to wait the entire off-season only to watch them play The Citadel and Loser Tech to start the year. No thanks!

In ND's case though, I personally don't mind a patsy in between say, UM and Mich St, you know? Better for the program is more important than what is better for me.

But again, I see your point.

I understand the need for playing somebody weaker in between, say a Michigan and MSU.....I just am not a fan of playing directional state u and so on. I know I said I didn't care about other schools scheduling, but it does bother me when Nebraska, Alabama, Florida, and on down the line schedule FCS schools for the sake of having an easy weekend. Its like the NFL scheduling a college team to me, and I feel it has no place in college football.
