Is this a special cadre akin to sorority "house mothers," dorm monitors that enforce parietal hours or schlubs manning the front desk at a rooming house?

When it comes to "illegals" I'm sure that I have at least one in my Irish family. An uncle of my grandmother, with a price on his head for his IRA activities, sailed from Ireland to Canada, altered (by one vowel) the spelling of his last name to enter the U.S. and settled in NYC. My grandmother listed him as a family member to "grease" her immigration. She changed the spelling of her name on forms to match the one he had adopted.

Granted it was a different era. At the time American industrialists, manufacturers and farmers were eager for low paid labor willing to work long, grueling hours to escape their lives of desperation, be it political, religious or economic. It mattered little if they were Micks, Spics, Bohunks, Chinks, Wops, etc.* It was in the best interest of the capitalists to allow that free flow of bodies.

Keep in mind that the bulk of the American Southwest (Northern California, too) was Mexican territory before being wrested away forcibly. Florida was "Spanish." New Orleans to Minnesota was "French." The thirteen original colonies "were" British, Dutch, Norse, Italian or whatever. Layered on top of that is the bald faced fact that there were residents displaced and removed over time. The native "reservations" are legally separate nations. Are they treated as such?

Do you resent that African slaves and their progeny were (FINALLY) granted full person-hood and citizenship in the course of the Civil War, without classes, paper work and interminable bureaucratic delays?

Politics and economics aside, the key is COMPASSION and RESPECT. This is a social issue. Let's maintain a a humane attitude and approach.

But dey tok ur jobs!!!

Some people fail to realize that the only reason they are a citizen is because their ancestor got on a boat and landed in NY. Boy, that was hard work.

My father and mother in law were both born elsewhere... Philippines and Mexico for the record... Both are now legal citizens and jumped through all the hoops asked of them... I TOTALLY get your point... But there are millions who have gone about it legally and doing so required more getting on a boat...

This is also exactly where my concern about admittance and funding comes from... The immigrants who do it legally shouldn't be punished.

So spelling issues run real real deep in your family

Agreed, but what leads you to believe that they will be "punished?"

Anyone entering our country illegally should be punished. It doesn't matter your opinions on the laws, they need to be enforced.

Otherwise, what the hell is the point?

On the other side, those that want to be here bad enough an for the right reasons, will do it correctly... It happens everyday. You should've seen the ceremony that my in laws attended, there were thousands.

So this horse **** about letting people slide because of "compassion" is just that. What about compassion for those that do it correctly? Or compassion for the tax payers?

Honesty, it doesn't matter about what happened 100s of years ago, or what you think about Americans and their rights to land these days, or where you think our forefathers came from...that means nothing in this discussion. It's about here and now. Those are all such weak arguments.

As far as the kids go, if you're here illegally, and have kids/anchor babies, then you should be sent home with the kids. If the "kid" is 18 and wants to stay? Fine. But why the hell can some illegal immigrant get to use their 2 yr old as a political pawn to tug at the heart strings of our country?

Either go home, or pay the fine and proper paperwork and stay. But there should be none of this "well... They're already here, and it would be real sad if we made them follow the rules that apply to others, so let them stay"

I don't believe they will be. My first thought when this popped up was other organizations that have given special opportunities to illegals specifically,.... Just off the top of my head I think it was BoA that had special interest rates for illegals or Cal Berkley that has a beneficial aid policy... If that happens then immigrants who do things legally would be denied something... Punished may be a bad term... If admission standards stay uniform and such then there is nothing but added opportunity here... So who cares? Is my opinion... Hope that clarifies,

On a serious note: I'm not all that up on my mother's side of the family and just how long they've been here. I know this – my maternal grandmother's family surname was Schmidt. Her father changed it to Smith since it wasn't all that "cool" to be German during WWI, even in Wisconsin. She married a Welshman named Jones. There are family stories that include English, Scottish, French and Russian "influences" on her side of my gene pool.

Why do I mention all of these things? I have no idea if any of the immigrants in my family were "legal" or not.

Hell, for all I know my Irish grandmother's fudging on the spelling of her name makes me a de jure (if not de facto) illegal. My maternal, Irish, grandmother had three copies of her birth certificate that were found after she passed. One, undoubtedly, was real. One "made" her old enough to emigrate The third, we guessed, was to "make" her younger than one of her many sisters. It was traditional to take sides (and chuckle) when they argued, earnestly, at family gatherings over who was the older. I still don't know but favor my Nana. She knitted woolen hats for me even though we lived in Florida.

And the deeper we delve into the many ingredients available, the richer the taste of the stew!

Whether Notre Dame had accepted me or not is of little consequence. Clearly it wasn't due to academics alone. Extracurricular high school activities may have played a role. Regardless, my package (please, no sly and/or snarky anatomical references) seemed to be a fit.

I met, played, partied, studied, liked and appreciated many "atypical" Domers in my years there. I never once asked, wondered or cared if any, domestic or foreign student was "legal" or not. My only concern was that they added to my and the university's community.

That's a difficult call. This is one of the many reasons that being part of the admissions decision process is hard as hell. Much as a 5* football recruit may turn out to be a flop due to unforeseen circumstances, so might a 5* academic. No guarantees, no fool-proof predictors. Only a "feeling" for what might be in the best interest, over time, for the student body, faculty and administrative ecosystem.

Who cares where they're from? Education shouldn't have boundaries.

Exactly.

And by the way, these "illegals" do all the jobs that Americans are too good to do AND they are more motivated than the current younger generation to help their families get out of their current situations by way of education, instead of banking on their athletic abilities.

My GGGGfather was the son of an English/Irish immigrants who came through Charleston and traveled to Alabama when the state was just beginning. Served in the Alabama Militia during the 2nd Creek war and earned 40 acres as bounty land. Not sure if he was legal or not.

I also have descendants from the eastern band of the Cherokee as recent as the Trail of Tears. One of their children eventually married an Irish frontiersman from western Va.

My GGGmother and her family came through Canada and settled with the rest of her dutch family in the Holland area of Michigan and married an Irishman from Chicago. Not sure if they were legal either.

Similar to dshans, names in my family changed to be more americanized in order to minimize discrimination and to get jobs. *I should also add that the people conducting census and writing down my families names misspelled them and were sometimes phonetically spelled because they did not understand the foreign way.

So my family is made up of a pretty eclectic mix of suspect foreign and indigenous peoples.

How has Cackalacky worked out?

I found an old service station button up shirt in a retro store with that on the name tag instead of "Bubba" or "Tiny." It actually got me my wife. LOL.

Isn't it ironic that we tolerate people who could care less about this country, simply because he/she was born here; and criminalize people who want to be here, but weren't lucky enough to be born in the U.S.?

Even doubly ironic is the fact that we "Americans" annihilated the people who were here before us and turned THEM into criminals for a hundred years and counting.

It's the American Way!!
