GoIrish. Not sure if you saw, but Frolov signed with the Rangers for 1 year and $3 million

Yeah, I guess the got Poni right after Fro signed his deal with the Ranjahs. Poni looks to be pretty comparable numbers and size wise with Fro. I will miss Fro. He was a real decent guy. Met him a bunch of times at Kings events and he was always very kind and pleasant in person. I think his quiet stoicism kind of gave him a bad rap with Kings fans.

So True. It is one of the great things about pro hockey teams is they do a lot of things where you really get face to face with the players over the course of a season and you feel personally attached to "your" team. All Kings practices all season are open to the public and you get to talk to players after and they will sign things and just have a rapport with the fans. You build up your favorites and it is harder to see them go.

All of my friends ask me why I like hockey so much. The first thing that I tell them is the players. A huge majority of them are super cool guys. They don't get in trouble off the ice. Just all in all good guys and it makes the game that much better to watch

Do you go to a lot of kings games?

I go to pretty much all the Kings games. Even though I live in Orange County, I make the drive up to LA - mostly due to my extreme hatred for the Ducks, but I was also born a Kings fan. About 5 years ago, my wife helped me fulfill my lifelong dream of having season tickets to a major sporting event. It was only going to be for a year or two, but once my wife started to go to games live on a regular basis, she was hooked. We keep the same seats every year and we have a blast.

Come out for New Years in So Cal. Flyers visit Staples on December 30th!

Me too. Leafs vs Bruins. Tiks, beer, food and beer cost a buddy and I over $350. Did I mention that we were 9 rows from the top of the ACC. You can bequeath your season tiks in Toronto, which is about the only way to get them by the way. Death and scalpers = Maple Leaf tickets.

My wife and I are actually going to start going to at least one game in a different city each year. This year we are heading up to Calgary and possibly Vancouver for Kings games. I want to hit some East Coast games next year or the year after. Definitely want to see the Kings play the Flyers, Pens, and Ranjahs.

We have to go to Nashville after the first of the year, so I will probably take in a Preds game whether or not the Kings are playing. Nashville is just a fun city.

Hockey took over my life when I was about six years old, so it is kind of fun to see it slowly taking over my wife's life little by little too. It gets worse for her every year.

That's cool. I'd love to be able to see the Flyers play all of the atlantic division rivals. Plus maybe the Caps, Leafs and Habs. I truly believe hockey is the best game to watch in person. The one game I went to was amazing

When I was in college, we used to road trip to the old Chicago Stadium for Blackhawks games. You could buy standing room only seats for like $10. There was a spot on the upper level, right in front of a beer vendor. You could stand at the rail and just lean back to buy a beer. You didn't even have to hardly move your feet. It was a blast and very cost effective.

Make sure you come to Boston for a game - Seguin is going to be studly. The Bruins could really make a run this year. One goal short (2 G7 OT losses) of the ECF the last 2 years - lots of talent and most likely the deepest C position in the NHL (Both on the active roster and in the prospect pool).

I also like watching the Kings a bit - I wanted to start watching a Western team and the Kings were the choice (mostly because Quick was my best friend's roommate at UMass). How are they looking this season?

Everytime I see or hear the Boston Bruins I'll just smile from now on.

Thank Brian Burke for being a complete idiot and making that trade.

Kings should be good again this year. I honestly think they'll seriously compete for the division title this year even though it's a really tough one.

I think if they stay resonably healthy and things go as well as they can, they have a real shot at making a run at the cup this year... first time I could say that in a long, long time.

Philly logo still gets me fired up - you have a 3-0 lead in game 7 and can't hold on? That just cries to me that Krecji is a #1 center. They lost a lot after he went down in game 4.

Although, I was rooting for Philly in the SC - can't stand the Blackhawks.

That is so cool that your best friend roomed with Quick in college. Quick is very mature beyond his young years and a real nice guy to boot. Always has time for the fans after practice no matter what. He is always saying "sir" and "ma'am" and very polite all the time. Very quiet and humble. My wife has a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge crush on Jonathan even though she is almost twenty years older than him (boy she would smack me if she knew I wrote that).

I am not sold on Bernier as much as everyone else is. I think Quick deserves to be the number 1 next year after being the workhorse this past season. Kings are going to be really good even though Kings fans are all doom and gloom after the organization didn't do too much in the offseason and "lost out" on Kovalchuk. I am glad they didn't break up the team and I am really glad they didn't sign Kovalchuk.

I think Kopitar will put up huge number this season and Dustin Brown will return to form. Doughty is...well Doughty, so no worries there. They are a little thin along the blue line, but some of the young'uns will step up. We'll see. I just can't freakin' wait for hockey to start up again.

I am looking forward to having two very capable goalies. That is something the Kings haven't had since...well, not in my memory at least.

Kings open with a back to back - night 1 in Calgary and night 2 in Vancouver. NICE!!! Then they come home for a short homestand against Atlanta, Carolina, and Vancouver again. We will know pretty "quick"ly how good this team will actually be.

Ilya Kovalchuk's deal with New Jersey Devils nullified - ESPN New York

its my opinion that Lombardi let his ego get in the way of signing him the first go around. Lombardi needs to pull a Jerry West move and make this kid an offer that he cant refuse. (considering Kovy's options, it shouldnt be that difficult)

Kovalchuk is a 'new age' player; Lombardi is an 'old skool' hockey guy. He needs to learn how to 'deal' with the new age player. Players nowadays(in all sports) want to have their egos stroked, large contracts thrown around and they want to be made to feel like they are 'the man'. Jerry West said himself he learned this during the Shaq trade.

West's first offer to shaq was 119million. Shaq rejected it!!! Jerry West then cut George Lynch, and Anthony Peeler from the Lakers. Then the next day, offered Shaq 122million and the rest is history. (by the way Jerry West also traded Vlade for rights to Kobe Bryant the same year)

Lombardi doesnt even have to be that drastic. He doesnt have to cut anyone, he doesnt have to trade anyone. All Lombardi needs to do is set his ego aside and make it happen; its the difference between winning, and chasing the 7th or 8th seed in the playoffs every year.

NOTE: when asked whats the difference between 119million and 122million, Shaq said, "$3million"

TD - I see your points. However, Lombardi has invested a lot of time in building through the draft and through prospect development. Why would he throw a significant portion of that away for a 27 year old specialty player? If he is going to jeopardize the ability to keep good, young talent like Doughty (20), Simmonds (22), Bernier (24), and the other young bucks coming up in the system only to bring in a specialty player that is going to affect the books for 15 years, that would undo the past 5 years of work.

I don't buy in to the thinking that the Kings are going to be somehow worse than they were last year. They had a pretty darn good year (100 points) and they really haven't lost anything. They haven't added too much either except a year's worth of experience and offseason training. Why are they going to be worse for not adding something that may or may not be a benefit? Why is it a foregone conclusion that they will be worse this year?

Kopitar will score over 40 goals this season - I have no doubts. Ponikarovsky is almost an apples for apples trade for Frolov. O'Donnell was a step behind all season and one of the young Dmen in the system can step in. Ivanans - a fight here and there and zero points all season? Who cares?

Show me where the subtraction comes in from last season. They are icing virtually the same team they did last year that finished sixth in a brutally tough Western Conference. They will add Bernier who will provide much needed rest to Quick, they have guys coming up like Brayden Schenn who will provide speed and energy. Kevin Westgarth will be an enforcer that actually has some scoring touch. Simmonds will be bigger and more confident, Smyth and Williams will be healthy. Doughty is coming off a Norris finalist season and will probably be improved. So where is the downgrade in the team?

I am pumped with this team and I think they are going to surprise a lot of people. What Western Conference team made any significant changes? Other than the fire sale that is the Chicago Blackhawks, there weren't really any earth shattering deals or acquisitions.

I am not big on Kovalchuk. I never wanted him in an LA sweater. He is an offense only player and that type of play doesn't really fit Terry Murray's system. I have said from Day 1 of this thing that he will end up in Russia and I think that is what will still happen. He wants the cash and I don't think he is even worth the 80 million the Kings were putting up. This free agent pool was sparse to say the least, but people were so caught up in this Kovalchuk saga. I hope it all goes away very, very soon.

That 27 year old specialty player is entering his prime. He represents one of the biggest and most difficult pieces to get on any championship team, a bonafide, scare-the-shit-out-the-opponent-difference maker. No one on the kings scares anyone on the ice. Kopitar scores, but he doesnt 'scare' any team. Signing Doughty, Bernier and Simmonds should not be affected by signing Kovy. This is LA, not some small market team. If ownership cant sign all those players, the team is doomed to mediocrity (remember how Roman Vopat was going to change the Kings fortunes around? Im still waiting for that 10 years later). Those players minus Kovy is not enough to win the stanley cup. Did you see loaded DET teams of the 90's, are you saying that the Kings cant afford what DET did? The ducks won the cup, and the Kings have stood by and watched. As a kings fan, there isnt a 3year plan, its a 5min plan.

I don't buy in to the thinking that the Kings are going to be somehow worse than they were last year. They had a pretty darn good year (100 points) and they really haven't lost anything. are they good enough to get out of the 2nd round? are they good enough to be favored to win their first round matchup? Prolly not, and Maybe. to me that is the same as last year.

Kopitar will score over 40 goals this season - I have no doubts. Ponikarovsky is almost an apples for apples trade for Frolov.

apples to apples? so we can expect Poni to painfully underachieve, that is exactly what Frolov did, underachieve. Poni would be a GREAT 3rd line guy, a mediocre 2nd line guy. Given LA KIngs history, they'll try him on the first line at times and wonder why he only has 11 goals(sarcasm). Poni is good addition to a playoff bound loaded team, but he is not the type of player to 'shoulder the load'. he just isnt that guy.

They are icing virtually the same team they did last year that finished sixth in a brutally tough Western Conference....So where is the downgrade in the team?

That same team that did not have the horses to beat a VAN team, and had no business making it out of the 2nd round even if they did beat VAN. Unless you think we have the second coming of the '79-'80 Edmonton Oilers, this team is not good enough to win. Keep in mind, my goal is the stanley cup, not winning the 2nd or 3rd round of playoffs.

I am pumped with this team and I think they are going to surprise a lot of people.

I am excited about this team as well. But there comes a point in the NHL playoffs that gimmicks and over-achieving stops working. "The best team always wins in an NHL 7-game series."

I am not big on Kovalchuk.

Believe it or not, Im not a huge Kovalchuk fan either. But the stars seem to be aligned for the Kings and I see this an oppourtunity that they cant/shouldnt pass up. In that respect, Kovalchuk is just like Shaq (when he left ORL - 28, in his prime, ready to make his name in this league). But then again, the Kings arent used to winning and have never known what it takes to bring home the cup. Maybe they should ask the Ducks for advice. (didnt ducks trade for JS Giguere, Bryzgalov and pay big bucks for Pronger, Selanne and Niedrmeyer?)

One thing we both agree on is we would both want this matter to resolved as soon as possible.

Well TD - We can agree to disagree on this issue. I don't think Kovalchuk is the answer. He is a one dimensional player and I don't believe he is worth 80 to 100 million.

I have my beliefs and I will still be at my usual 38+ games per year rooting my ass off and having a great time each and every game.

I love this team and I am looking forward to the start of the season.

I can't wait for October 30th when the Devils come to town. I can't wait to see the welcome Kovalchuk will get from the Staples Center crowd. Probably a similar greeting to the one he will receive at every NHL arena he plays in outside of the Garden State.

Still think he is going to bolt for Russia. I have thought all along he would end up in the KHL and I think that just might happen.

I also think he might bolt for Russia for a couple reasons:

1) Money is tax-free and they've shown they will pay big money for big names.

2) Russia is home - home is a known commodity for Kovalchuk - maybe he wants to play at home.

3) He's kind of proven that playing for a contender doesn't really matter to him (pure speculation but the fact that he didn't ask out of Atlanta at any point kind of irks me a bit).

Hey KPENN -

Found this interesting: NHL released the TV schedule today and the Kings will be shown on two late-season NBC games. Guess someone is starting to notice the upstart kids from tinseltown!

They play February 13th at...wait for it, wait for it...PHILLY. And then March 13th at Dalls.

I know twice is not that big of a deal (not like the media darlings that are the Pittsburg Penguins that play on NBC 5 times - in addition to the Winter Classic on Jan. 1), but at least the Kings will get some national recognition this season.

I just hope they are playing really well at that time.

Interesting it says on the flyers schedule it's a 7 o'clock game. I wonder if they'll change it cause I don't remember any 7pm NBC games. IMO the national tv schedule needs to be spread out more. Nice to see the kings get some exposure. On a side note I sort of didn't realize the kings and flyers played twice

I didn't realize that either. Should be a good test.

Kings just agreed to a deal with Willie Mitchell. That should help our blue line a little and hopefully quiet some of the naysayers.
