Easy to do after his performance last season. My only hope is that he is looking ahead to UFA and knows he has to perform this year or he won't get the big $$$. He will head in to the twilight of his career as an underachiever if he doesn't put it together soon.

Rumor has it that he is in the best shape of his life and seems more dedicated than he has been since his days in Ana-slime.

Why is signing Doughty taking so long? The longer it goes, the more Lombardi makes me nervous. Back up the Brinks truck to the kid's bank and give him everything he wants already. If the Kings dont, another team will.

Rumor has it (and it is my guess too) is that Lombardi isn't as concerned about the amount of the contract because the Kings have enough to spend, but rather it is about the length that is the sticking point. Lombardi wants to get him locked up for a long contract - possibly 7 or 8 years, maybe even as much as 10 or 11. Doughty's camp is looking for 3 to 5 years. They know Doughty didn't have the kind of season to command huge dollars, so they want to have a shorter contract and then go for the mega-bucks when Doughty is in his prime.

There is another rumor that Doughty wants to be the highest paid King which would take him up over the $7 mil Kopitar is getting. That would even put him over Duncan Keith money.

I don't know which is right. I really think it is about the term, but you never know. It could have to do with a no trade/no movement clause.

I just wish they would get it done.

I just don't think he can get both. He might get top King money, but I think the term would have to be upwards of 10 years. He won't get that kind of dollar figure only to be a UFA in 3-5.

I can't imagine what he would ask for if he gets $7 mil now and then is a UFA when he is 26! He would be asking for Kovalchuk money.

I would also assume that Doughty is asking for top King money at 3-5 years, plus a no trade/movement clause. Lombardi isn't going to get locked in to a deal like that without the ability to move Doughty and get some value for him.

Unfortunately, the longer this goes on, the less likely I think it becomes that Doughty plays the majority of his career as a King.

Great article about Stu "The Grim Reaper" Grimson talking about the deaths of Rypien, Belak, and Boogard and their roles as enforcers.

Chris Jones on the rash of hockey-enforcer suicides - Grantland

By the way, Grimson is now a lawyer in Memphis. How cool would it be to have the Grim Reaper represent you in court?!?

Good read.

Here's one former Flyer and current Adirondack Phantoms assistant coach Riley Cote gave to Men's Health.

Preseason hockey starts tonight :)

Can't wait! Going to the first Kings preseason game on Wednesday. It is a "split-squad" game against Phoenix. Half the team here and half the team in Phoenix, but I don't care. Here in LA the Gagne/Richards/Brown line will be the number 1 line, so it will be fun to see those three for the first time.

Lots of good reports so far about Penner. He reportedly has lost 15 pounds and gained muscle and his quickness is improved. He will be a nice addition if he can get motivated to have a big year. Its a contract year so he shouldn't have too much trouble getting motivated. We'll see. Only drawback to him having a huge year is we will only have that production for one year. He will go UFA where someone will be willing to give him an overpriced contract and Dean Lombardi is not the guy to overspend.

I knew you would love him! I saw some highlights of the game. Was he wearing the A just for the split squad game or is he going to have it for good?

Just for that game. Him, JVR and Matt Carle had them cause none of their captains were in the lineup

Got it.

Did he drop the gloves last night? I figure he will be doing more of that with the new team early on - wanting to prove himself a bit.

No he didn't which kinda surprised me.

Him, Schenn and Eric Wellwood started the game and had an awesome first shift and Simmonds had like 3 hits at the start

Someone threw a banana from the stands at Wayne Simmonds as he was going in on a shootout. Totally uncalled for and wrong. He still scored.

Ya I heard this is pretty common in Europe when Black Players take a shot. That is so jacked up.

When I played football in college and we played BYU they threw tortillas at us (Univeristy of New Mexico).

I heard about this last night. Ridiculous! I love the fact that he still scored. He such a good attitude about things like that.

Yeah he's handled it really well. It's a shame it had to happen, but what can you do.

haha....throwing tortillas is kinda funny to me, defintely not appropriate, but still kinda funny; throwing a banana at wayne simmonds I think is despicable and not funny at all.
