in fairness hiring MF was the opposite of this. He was a national guy and ND outbid other schools for him when he had his pick of many different opportunities
Brian Kelly had to push JS so hard to open up the checkbook for Freeman. Kelly probably knew by then that if he could ditch ND and Swarbrick he would (and did). Swarbrick stuck with Kelly and was ditched. Kelly knew better that Swarbrick wasn't going to keep investing in the program like so many other programs do.

I get people wanting to draw connections here, but Brian Kelly was looking for an out from almost the minute he got to ND. It was always a stepping stone job for him. He thought it was going to get him to the NFL, but nobody in the NFL wanted him. So he took the next best thing he could find when the opportunity presented itself.

Perception is that ND is gunshy from previous bad PR moves dating back to Bob Davie:

Former OL Coach Joe Moore sues ND for age discrimination

ND hires George O’Leary…”right out of central casting”…before his resume is discovered to be falsified

ND has to settle for Ty Willingham which ends disastrously & the first time in recent memory a HC wasn’t given 5 years.

ND fires Ty to secure Urban Meyer before another school does. They can’t pull it off and have to settle for an ND alum who had never been a HC.

ND extends Weis after a close loss & the contract becomes a lesson on how not to get conned by a HC’s agent at the first sign of success. One of the main reasons ND fans can’t stand Kevin White.

Brian Kelly leads ND to BCS NC yet proceeds to interview w/ the Eagles the week after the embarrassing loss.

ND self-reports minor violations & as a consequence has to vacate almost 2 season’s worth of wins.

ND finally gets an elite DC yet allows it to become a bidding war for his services after one season & him to an SEC team

Despite multiple OL coaches w/ great track records being available, ND settles for an internal hire

BK becomes first HC in modern era to leave ND for a “better“ job.

ND’s OC leaves a year later for a better job.

ND forgets that it’s no longer 1985 & coaches aren’t going to accept less for the ND brand so the University must continue to settle for 2nd-3rd tier replacements.

ND could have offered a home and home with Utah and that would offset the buyout. Heck, a Shamrock series game would have been enough. Got to think creatively.

The fact that the Alumni isn't demanding JS to be fired tells you how uninvolved they are. This shit wouldn't be tolerated at OSU and many other programs. ND isn't committed. That is the hard truth to accept.
Quit beating a dead horse. Show us where this is on Swarbrick. He has a budget that he controls, but I would be shocked if there is discretionary money for buyouts. Even expenditures that are in the budget typically require approval before spending when they involve millions. I would be surprised if Swarbrick didn't recommend going forward and was shot down by the BoT.

True but the underlying reason is still the truth. Many times Brian Kelly had to go on bended knee or demand upgrades out of JS- and he was rightfully sick of doing it. The upgrades to the facilities were driven by Kelly's demands and it was like pulling teeth. That won't happen at LSU.

I am sorry but this is 100 on Swarbrick.. from forcing the Tommy hire to not structuring his contract right so he couldn't leave or had a massive buyout to all the bad PR and not having a plan in place for hiring after Tommy has been flirting with other programs for a year.... a complete disaster in every which way

I think the issue is he didn't have control over the optics of the situation. If he knew there was even the *potential* for a funding issue from the BoT w/r/t the buyout, he should never have allowed Marcus to parade Ludwig around as if his hiring was a done deal. That look is just beyond embarrassing and makes ND look completely unserious about supporting Marcus or the football program at large.

Another part of it is the widespread belief that he waived or took less on the buy-outs for Kelly and Rees, and seemed to think others would do the same. He's getting played coming and going.

i think most AD's would breath a sigh of relief that UGA isn't going for a national OC search and potentially resetting the market

I have quite a few friends that are huge UGA fans……they didn’t like Bobo when he was there before, this will not be a popular hire.
No doubt they won’t be thrilled but if UGA was going to do this, now is the ideal time as they’re coming off back-to-back NCs
