Magnitude-7.9 Quake Hits Nepal, Causing Big Damage, Injuries - ABC News

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Apr 25, 2015, 3:23 AM ET
By BINAJ GURUBACHARYA and MUNEEZA NAQVI Associated Press

A strong magnitude-7.9 earthquake shook Nepal's capital and the densely populated Kathmandu Valley before noon Saturday, causing extensive damage with toppled walls and collapsed buildings, officials said.

Dozens of people with injuries were being brought to the main hospital in central Kathmandu. There was no immediate estimate on fatalities.

Several buildings collapsed in the center of the capital, including centuries-old temples, said resident Prachanda Sual.

He said he saw people running through the streets in panic. Ambulance sirens blared and government helicopters hovered overhead.

National radio warning people to stay outdoors because more aftershocks are feared. It is also asking people to maintain calm.

Old Kathmandu city is a warren of tightly packed, narrow lanes with poorly constructed homes piled on top of each other.

Nepal's Information Minister Minendra Rijal told India's NDTV station that there are reports of damage in and around Kathmandu but no immediate word on casualties.

He said rescue teams were on the scene.

The epicenter was 80 kilometers (49 mile) northwest of Kathmandu, he said. The Kathmandu Valley is densely populated with nearly 2.5 million, with the quality of buildings often poor.

An Associated Press reporter in Kathmandu said a wall in his compound collapsed and there was damage to nearby buildings.

The U.S. Geological Survey revised the magnitude from 7.5 to 7.9 and said the quake hit at 11:56 a.m. local time (0611 GMT) at Lamjung a shallow depth of 11 kilometers (7 miles).

Mohammad Shahab, a resident from Lahore, Pakistan, said he was sitting in his office when the earthquake rocked the city near the border with India. (BGIF note: 700+ miles from Katmandu to Lahore)

He said the tremors continued for a while but now the situation was normal.

The sustained quake also was felt in India's capital of New Delhi. AP reporters in Indian cities of Lucknow in the north and Patna in the east also reported strong tremors.

Nepal earthquake: Buildings collapse in Kathmandu after 7.9 magnitude quake in Pokhara, witnesses say - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Nepal earthquake: Buildings collapse in Kathmandu after 7.9 magnitude quake in Pokhara, witnesses say

BGIF N.B. I had to ZOOM OUT of this map (minus) about 8 times to see the epicenter location relative to Katmandu to the East, right, and Annapura to the north, top of page).Pohara is north of the epicenter about a 1/3 of the way to Annapura.

A massive earthquake measuring 7.9 magnitude struck 80 kilometres east of Pokhara in Nepal, about halfway between the town and the capital Kathmandu, the US Geological Survey says, and witnesses say some buildings in Kathmandu have collapsed.

Reports of injuries and fatalities are coming through.

A 15-year-old girl has died in India, near the border with Nepal, after the wall of a house collapsed, and witnesses say a child has died in a town outside Kathmandu when a statue fell in a park.

A Reuters reporter in Kathmandu said he had seen some buildings collapse and walls of several houses reduced to rubble.

"Everyone is out in the streets, people are rushing to the hospital," the reporter said.

The quake was 31 kilometres deep.

Strong earthquake rocks Nepal, damages Kathmandu - BBC News

This is a link to a picture of Durban Square in Katmandu post earthquake:

Here's a link to Durban Square pre-earthquake for comparison.

The Katmandu Valley has a population of about 2.5 million people in a 230 Sq mi area yielding a density of about 11,000 per sq mi. I had no idea it was that crowded.

Here's a link to area photos showing the building density and types of construction. Many of the buildings are centuries old and aren't made of concrete and re-bar or designed for earthquake loading. I was in San Francisco for the Loma Prieta quake this should be have a lot more destruction and fatalities even without the decked highway.

7.9 magnitude earthquake rattles Nepal near Katmandu - CNN.com

By Ben Brumfield and Don Melvin, CNN
Updated 4:28 AM ET, Sat April 25, 2015

...

CNN's Manesh Shrestha, who was himself injured, said he saw five bodies at a hospital.

...

Avalanches were reported on Mount Everest, sending mountaineers running for cover.

"Everest base camp huge earthquake then huge avalanche from pumori," Twitter user Alex Gavan said. "Running for life from my tent. Unhurt. Many many people up the mountain."

...

Kanak Masni, a journalist in Kathmandu, told CNN by phone that a historic building in Kathmandu called Dharahara -- also known as Bhimsen Tower -- was down. The building, nearly 63 meters tall, provided visitors with a panoramic view of of the Kathmandu valley. It was built in 1832.

Masni told CNN by telephone that this appeared to be "the most massive earthquake to hit central Nepal since 1934." In that quake, which was 8.0 magnitude and centered near Mount Everest, more than 10,000 people were reported killed.

IBN reporter K. Dhiksit looked out his window in Kathmandu and saw the walls of many buildings down. As he watched, an aftershock rattled the street. He heard "big booming sounds," and people fled into the streets, he said.

Shit. I'm going there in a month and a half so I'm hoping the damage is not too bad. Obviously I hope everyone made it out ok as well.

Prayers to the poor souls in this region. Just devastating. I have been checking out messages coming from Everest basecamp and the Khumbu Icefall. Sounds like at least 8 deaths. The icefall is destroyed from some reports. Just terrible news. This incredibly poor region relies heavily on tourism, now they have this.

On CNN, the crawler noted that according to the U.N. 40% of buildings are down.

It took New Orleans more than 6 months to recover from Katrina. That was with FEMA, the Feds deep pockets, and 46 largely unaffected states as sources for food, shelter, building materials, and building equipment. Nepal doesn't have those resources.

Ya definitely looking into it right now but it's not looking good. Like you said, lots of reported damage and it won't like it'll be restored anytime soon.

Earthquake in Nepal leaves hundreds dead - CNN.com

The death toll of 1,832 is expected to rise as the full extent of the damage is assessed.

The loss of life reported so far "is really based on the information we have from the main cities," Lex Kassenberg, Nepal country director for CARE International, told CNN. "But if you look at the spread of the earthquake a lot of the rural areas have been hit as well. The information we received from the field is that 80% of the houses in these rural area

My friend and co-worker landed in Kathmandu on Thursday and she was on her way to basecamp. We've heard from her - she is OK in terms of surviving the quake but obviously still a dire situation.

Death toll in Nepal surges amid hunt for survivors

3,700 and counting

As rescuers desperately searched for survivors who may be buried amid the rubble in the Nepalese capital of Katmandu or trapped in remote mountain villages, officials announced that more than 3,700 people are now confirmed dead after the earthquake that struck Saturday.

The death toll could rise further after officials are able to assess the damage to the communities nestled within the country's mountains. Efforts to reach those villages have so far been hampered by landslides that have blocked many mountain trails.

Matt Darvas, a member of the aid group World Vision told the Associated Press that many of those villages will only be accessible by helicopter. Police in Nepal on Monday told the news agency that at least 3,617 people were confirmed dead.

"Villages like this are routinely affected by landslides, and it's not uncommon for entire villages of 200, 300, up to 1,000 people to be completely buried by rock falls," Darvas told AP.

Nepal Earthquake Toll Tops 5,000 as Rescuers Reach Remote Villages

Rishi Khanal spent about 80 hours in a rubble-filled room with three dead bodies after the seven-story building he was in collapsed around him during Saturday’s massive earthquake in downtown Kathmandu. The 28-year-old was finally pulled out of the rubble on Tuesday, Reuters reports, by a Nepali-French rescue team combing the capital city for survivors.

Norwegians help save woman in Nepal

Norwegian, French and Israeli rescue workers were involved Thursday in the dramatic rescue of a woman found under the rubble in Kathmandu, five days after a killer quake devastated the city in Nepal.
The 24-year-old woman, Krishna Kumari Khadka, was still alive and her rescue sparked impromptu applause from crowds following the operation that was launched after two dogs from the Norwegian search and rescue team Norsar alerted crews to her presence under the rubble.
It took the crews most of the afternoon to dig her out. She was immediately sent to a local hospital by ambulance. Another person found near her was declared dead at the scene.
“It’s incredible that we could find her, and save her,” one of the Norwegian rescue workers told state broadcaster NRK. “After all the years of training, and all the work with our dogs, it was worth it.
