At the age of 61, I decided to go back to school. I have to write a paper. I decided to do it on college athletics and whether student athletes should be paid something above the cost of the education and the room & board.

I'll do my google and bing searches, but wanted to know if any of you know of some good books or articles that cite good statistics, like how much monetary wise the industry of college athletics is. How many kids play sports in college, how many graduate, how many drop out, what the average cost of a four year degree is, what a four year degree is worth in earning potential, etc..

I don't need to know if you are for or against paying, but feel free to express if you want to.

Thanks

There is a lot of info in the Johnny Football thread with links to various articles, as well as a lot of thoughts by the IE posters. You may find some background info there for your paper.

Couple of thoughts in forming your argument:

1) Find Return on Investment (like Wooly's chart) information for BCS schools -
2) Find figures on how much debt the average student takes on during 4 years of college and how long it takes them to pay it off (narrow it to BCS schools if you can - every school covered by the NCAA would be tough)- 1) and 2) show how great of a benefit a scholarship is to student-athletes
3) If you advocate FOR paying student-athletes you should come up plausible ways for them to get paid (included in a scholarship, from the NCAA, from the university, etc) and defend that way over others
4) If you advocate AGAINST paying student-athletes, I would still bring up all of those scenarios and blow them out of the water
5) Discuss how student-athletes are unable to "be like their peers" because they don't have time for summer jobs/other ways of making money. Show how the rules/sport can inhibit them.

Those are just some thoughts I had. I don't have knowledge of any scholarly articles about this, but I bet there are some out there. Especially in legal journals or something.

Thanks guys. Some really good points and thoughts I can definitely use.

I actually started this past summer semester. Pulled A's in both classes. The best part of it was when my granddaughter who's a HS freshman told me she thought it was funny her grandpa was in college but she was proud I got an A.

The younger generation could sure learn from your example. Congrats and good luck.
