Snaked a PS3 from my buddy because I always just bummed off of people I lived with. Attempting to connect wirelessly.

First let me state that I am not an idiot so please dont give generic advice unless you think I am absoultely missing something obvious. I read enough generic advice on yahoo answers. I know what an SSID and a WPA2-PSK. I scanned and located my network and put in the password.

It says "the attempt to obtain IP address timed out". I am currently on my laptop so it isnt the router.

Additonally, I may in fact be an idiot because I am not reading any instructions. Trying to wing it.

Any advice

Im glad my problem can be a forum for people to exchange screen names.

Haha. I think I am on but it is crawling. Went to create an account and it asked for a system update. Its been at 1% for about 1 minute.

Dude, wtf is the point of having wireless if it is going to crawl that slow? Does anyone have a worthwhile wireless PS3 internet connection?

I just DL'ed the update in 2 minutes with wired connection

You always have a choice. I went straight through my floor, in a discreet location that is.

Might not be the provider, might be the router itself. Just not worth messing with it if you can plug a wire in. Besides, don't you know that wireless gives you brain cancer?

MG,

WPA security can slow down your connection, but it should NOT be to a crawl. If you haven't already, try power cycling your router. If that hasn't been done in a while it's possible the NAT is a mess- some router are more susceptible to that than others.

Also, need more info. We know it's wireless, but how far? Same floor, same room? What kind of material is your dwelling place made of (if it IS going through walls/floors)? Have any cordless phones, fluorescent lighting? Are you in an apartment, competing with lots of other access points?

I've never had any issues with my PS3/Wireless speed. Streaming Netflix and MLB.tv games always have great quality too. How old is your router and is it on the same level of the house as the PS3?

I have a dual band router made by vizio. Same as the Cisco systems dual band except it doesn't have the gigabit ethernet for half the cost.
It runs a tv a ps3 a wii 2 laptops 2 cell phones and a desktop hard lined to it.
Unless I have everything going at once it can run netflix on the wii and ps3 plus both laptops surfing never going below 65 mbps on any device

im a little confused...did you ever get it connected? if not, what problems arose? from what I can read it may have connected, but it was too slow, so you went with a wired connection?

If your just now messing with it today, I know you had to accept some sort of new user agreement with the Playstation Network. I know I had to agree to the terms before I even signed in this morning. About your connection I used wireless for a long time and I bought a couple of other things that used wireless, laptop, printer. That really slowed my connection and made things very laggy. I know a bit about this issue and if you need some help because I've went through just about everything pm me. By the way my PSN name is NDIRISH3232 add me.

802.11g standard is a54Mbps connection, and while you almost never get the whole 54, with the router being as close as it is to his PS3, he's definitely getting most of it. So the connection in and of itself is not the problem here...

MG, you should try a ping from one of the other computers in the house to the IP of your PS3's wireless connection. Let us know what the latency is. LMK if you need help doing this.

Ill have to give it another try today. The hard wire is flying. Routeris right next to the ps3. I've pinged using the cmd prompt but not really sure what you mean by using another computer.

And TDHeysus, you are correct. Additionally, during the update, it took about 45 mins to get 25% complete then it said it lost connection. It was then that I switched to the hard wire.

Poor wording on my part. I just meant to ping from any computer, lol. BTW, what was the time on your pings?
