They’re playing hard, but you can tell how tired they are already. If we can get Abby and Vaughn back and stay healthy with everyone else, we can be a dangerous team the rest of the way with a healthy rotation.

Love the fight at the end. There are going to be a lot of grinding this year to achieve positive results. Brunelle is quickly emerging as a leader. Got to do something about the free throws. Easily the difference in the game today. Go Irsh!

Peoples has not been as good as I thought she would. Has her moments but she's looking like a freshman. Gilbert, Sniezek, and Brunelle are my favorites in that order. Cosgrove has been a pleasant surprise. She works hard. Not sure about Walker, yet. I liked the fight at the end. They never gave up, even down 11 at one point. But the free throws and turnovers, oye!

As far as peoples goes. I agree she does look like a freshman, which is to be expected frankly. In better circumstances, the freshmen should not have to play this much... That said, there are plays that she does that makes me think she is going to be special in the near future.

The Foul Shot Accuracy was an obvious problem. ND attempted 15 more Free Throws but only made 4 more. Only Gilbert's 3-5, 75% was reasonable. The 3 Point Shooters, Brunelle and Cosgrove, each missed 3 FTs, Peoples missed 4.

The Rebs were as expected. Advantage Spartans 39-30.

The Turnovers were comparable 20 MSU, 18 ND, BUT in Pts Off Turnovers MSU had an 11 point edge, 29 to 18.

#15 IRISH COME UP JUST SHORT IN 72-69 DEFEAT TO #16 MICHIGAN STATE
BRUNELLE SCORES 11 POINTS IN THE FOURTH TO FINISH WITH 19

NOTRE DAME, IN — The No. 15 Notre Dame women’s basketball team rallied from seven down in the fourth quarter against No. 16 Michigan State, with a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but the three-point attempt didn’t fall, as the Fighting Irish (2-2) dropped a 72-69 decision.

Brunelle tallied 11 points in the fourth to finish with a co-team high of 19 points with Katlyn Gilbert. Brunelle nearly logged a double-double with eight boards to go along with her three blocks. In addition, Anaya Peoples supplied 15 points, while Danielle Cosgrove earned a career best with 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Michigan State started 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, jumping out to a 17-4 advantage. However, the Irish kept the Spartans off the scoreboard for the final 4:26 of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 17-10.

The Irish defense remained strong to start the second, extending the MSU scoreless streak for another 2:30 for a combined scoreless stretch of seven minutes. In that span, the Irish forced eight total turnovers, pulling within three at 17-14.

After two points in the first, Katlyn Gilbert powered the Irish offensively in the second, connecting on 5-of-10 from the field to supply 10 points for the period. Notre Dame pulled to 21-20 at 4:35, but ultimately trailed 32-26 at the half.

The Spartans edged the Irish 21-18 in the third quarter to take a 53-44 advantage heading into the final period. Notre Dame got most of its scoring from the free-throw line, converting 10-of-15 from the stripe.

Cosgrove kicked off the fourth with a three-pointer, energizing her squad and the home fans alike. Brunelle then caught the spark, scoring six of the team’s next seven points from 7:08-5:30, pulling the Irish to within one at 58-57. However, what followed next was a 3:30 scoring drought, as Michigan State built its lead back up to six at 67-61 with 38 seconds remaining.

After a 1-of-2 trip from the line from Walker, Brunelle garnered a steal and delivered the layup, making it a one-possession game with 27 seconds left. Later down 70-66, Brunelle delivers with a clutch three with 10 seconds left. Notre Dame immediately fouled, sending Michigan State’s Taryn McCutcheon to the line, who converted both. With nine seconds left, the Irish dribbled the length of the court, but the three didn’t fall, as the Irish came up short, 72-69.

Notes

With the loss, Notre Dame still leads the overall series, 11-9, against Michigan State, with a 6-5 mark at home. The Spartans snap Notre Dame’s seven-game win streak against them.
Brunelle logged her fourth consecutive game in double figures with 19 points tonight. The last freshman to start her Irish career with four straight was Brianna Turner in 2014. The 19 points marked a season high for the freshman.
The Irish forced 20 turnovers tonight and have now forced 48 total over the last two games.
Danielle Cosgrove doubled her career high with 12 points tonight, converting 5-of-8 from the line.
UP NEXT

The Fighting Irish conclude their four-game homestand with Toledo on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. ET. The game will stream live on ACCNX.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The (RV) Notre Dame women’s basketball squad look to earn its first ranked win on the season, when the Fighting Irish travel to Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 23, to challenge No. 21 Michigan (4-0). Tip is slated for 1 p.m. ET inside the Crisler Center, with the contest being streamed on BTN+.

IRISH VERSUS THE WOLVERINES

Notre Dame leads the overall series against Michigan, 12-7, but owns a losing mark in Ann Arbor at 4-5. The Irish most recently made the trip to Michigan two seasons ago, when they defeated the Wolverines, 83-63, as part of the ACC/B1G Challenge. Arike Ogunbowale paced the Irish with 32 points.

At the time, the Notre Dame win at Michigan marked just the second victory by a Wolverines opponent in the team’s last 32 games played at the Crisler Center, dating back to the 2015-16 season. Fast forward to this coming Saturday and a victory would mark the sixth win by an opposing squad in the Crisler Center in the past 61 games.

BRUNELLE SETS FRESHMAN RECORD

Never in the history of the Fighting Irish women’s basketball program has a true freshman started her Notre Dame career with five straight games in double figures … until now. Freshman Sam Brunelle did just that with her 19-point performance in the win over Toledo, picking up her first career double-double as well with 13 boards.

Brunelle currently co-leads the Irish in scoring with Gilbert with 16.0 ppg, which ranks 11th in the ACC.

HIGHEST RANKED RECRUITING CLASS

Coach McGraw just signed her highest ranked recruiting class during her time at Notre Dame, reeling in the No. 3 ranked group in the 2020 class. The Irish received NLI’s from Amirah Abdur-Rahim, No. 25 Alli Campbell, No. 44 Alasia Hayes, No. 32 Natalija Marshall and No. 23 Maddy Westbeld. It not only marks the highest ranked recruiting class in her tenure, but also ties the most commits as well.

“This is one of the best classes we’ve ever had,” Coach McGraw stated. “Obviously down to six scholarship players right now so numbers was our first priority. We got four kids ranked in the top-50 and a top-3 recruiting class. All such a great fit for our program.”

In addition, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced those student-athletes on the 2020 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Girls High School Trophy Watch List. Campbell, Marshall and Westbeld were all recognized as top-50 player of the year candidates.

DEFENSIVE PRIDE

Coach McGraw noted before the season that this year’s crop will have to pride itself on defense. Though the homestand didn’t all go Notre Dame’s way, the Irish can certainly be proud of the fact they forced 28 Lady Vol turnovers, including 10 in a six-minute span in the fourth quarter. It marked the most turnovers forced since Notre Dame caused 25 against Tennessee on Jan. 18, 2018. Next, the Irish forced 20 Michigan State turnovers, then forced 21 Toledo turnovers – thus totaling 69 turnovers over the last three games.

The defense really set the tone in the second half versus Toledo, limiting the Rockets to 28 points over the final two quarters. In the fourth quarter alone, the Irish caused four Toledo shot-clock violations.

AGAINST THE BIG TEN

For the past decade, the Irish have been absolutely dominant against the Big Ten conference. Since the 2009-10 season, the Irish went 22-0 against Big Ten opposition spanning the next 10 years, until Michigan State broke the streak on Nov. 14.

WELCOME BACK GILBERT

Last season, Gilbert played in six full games, including a breakout Vancouver Showcase, before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury against Iowa on Nov. 29, 2018. Nearly a year later, Gilbert has returned in full force, co-leading the team in scoring with her 16.0 ppg, which ranks 11th in the ACC. In fact, Gilbert is riding a career best stretch of five consecutive double-digit scoring performances.

Gilbert also leads the Irish in shooting percentage (.457), made field goals (32) and steals/game (2.2). Lastly, she is still the lone Irish player with a 20+ point performance, recording a career high of 24 points against Loyola.

NO REST FOR THE IRISH

Four Notre Dame starters all rank within the top-12 in the ACC in minutes played. Destinee Walker leads the entire ACC, averaging 36.6/game. Gilbert ranks fourth at 35.4, Sniezek fifth with 35.2, and Brunelle sixth with 34.4.

#24 CONTINUED

Walker debuted with the Irish with a 10-point, 10-rebound, double-double – just the second of her career. In game two, Walker came out hot, scoring 13 of her 19 points against Loyola MD in the first half. Walker then led the Irish in scoring against Tennessee with 18 points.

Walker hit the game-winning basket for the Irish in the 54-51 win over Toledo (11/20), tallying 12 points in the game.

Walker has also been the most consistent at the free-throw line. Her 19 made free-throws leads the team and ranks 58th in the country. Walker also leads the squad in free-throw percentage (at least 10 attempts) at .731 – which ranks 10th in the ACC.

THE VETERAN – SNIEZEK

Sniezek is averaging 5.4 assists per game, which ranks fourth in the ACC and 51st in the nation. Meanwhile, her 1.4 A/TO ratio ranks ninth in the league.

Outside of distributing the ball, Sniezek has been the team’s defensive catalyst. For example, with the Irish up three with two minutes remaining against Toledo (11/20), Sniezek recorded a clutch steal which Walker then converted into the game-winning basket for the 54-51 victory.
