Opponent was very awed and inadequate. Marina took the day off; Jackie half took the day off. Nice to see so many minutes for the bench. Hope that this doesn't get our girls snoozing to start the next game --- Muffet will have to motivate. (If it's MSU --- CMU is just too small.)

Ogunbowale, Shepard lead No. 3 Irish in 92-50 rout of B-C
Associated Press

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Arike Ogunbowale scored 23 points and teammate Jessica Shepard had a double-double as No. 3 Notre Dame, the No. 1 seed in the Chicago Region, began defense of its NCAA championship with a 92-50 victory over No. 16-seed Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.

Ogunbowale hit 8-of-15 shots while adding four assists and three steals for the Fighting Irish (31-3), who never trailed. Notre Dame shot 54.5 percent (36 of 66) with 24 assists.

Shepard, who had her 15th double-double of the season by halftime, finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, her 55th double-double in a career that started at Nebraska in 2015.

Brianna Turner, a 6-foot-3 forward who sat out last season's NCAA run with an ACL injury, just missed a double-double by one rebound, finishing with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, nine rebounds and five blocks. Jackie Young added 11 points. Sophomore reserve Mikayla Vaughn, who also sat out last season's championship run with an ACL injury, had nine points and 11 rebounds for Notre Dame, which won the board battle 48-28.

Angel Golden had 25 points for coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis' Lady Wildcats (21-11), who won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament and were playing in their first NCAA tournament ever.

The Irish used their 39th run of 10 points or better -- 25-0, their longest spurt of the season -- to take control of the game midway through the first quarter on way to a 51-19 halftime lead.

Bethune-Cookman, which left 80-degree temperatures behind in their Daytona Beach, Florida home, was cold for nearly nine minutes as Notre Dame increased a 29-12 first-quarter lead to 47-12 on Young's drive to the basket with 3:15 left. McGraw was able to rest her starters for much of the second quarter as Shepard scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds, Ogunbowale had 14 points and Turner had 11 points with four rebounds and four blocks.

Golden had 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-11 from beyond the arc, to lead the Lady Wildcats. The last 3-pointer broke Notre Dame's shutout effort with 2:49 to play in the second quarter.

The Irish then used a 9-0 run near the end of the third quarter, fueled by Ogunbowale, Shepard and reserve Mikayla Vaughn, to increase the lead to 40 points before settling for a 74-35 lead entering the final quarter.

BIG PICTURE

Bethune-Cookman: The Lady Wildcats never led but were down just 9-7 with 5:36 left in the first quarter when they went cold. They went 8:59 between baskets in the first half before Golden drained her third 3-pointer with 2:49 to play in the first half to finish with a 7-4 run. Bethune-Cookman shot just 16.7 percent (3 of 18) in the second quarter.

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish once again showed off their transition game, outrebounding Bethune-Cookman 29-11 and outscoring the Lady Wildcats 30-6 in the paint thanks to 14 assists on 20 field goals.

Women's NCAA tournament 2019: Defending champ Notre Dame opens with dominating win
Charlie Creme ESPN.com

Notre Dame scored six seconds into its opening game of the women's NCAA tournament on Saturday and never looked back in a comfortable 92-50 win over Bethune-Cookman in South Bend.

It was the kind of performance expected of a No. 1 seed and Final Four favorite against a No. 16 making its first trip to the NCAA tournament.

No team has dominated over the last five weeks like Notre Dame, the defending NCAA champion. Since losing to Miami on Feb. 7, the Irish have won 10 straight by an average of 30 points per game. That stretch includes wins over NCAA tournament teams Syracuse (twice), NC State, North Carolina, Florida State and fellow No. 1 seed Louisville.

Saturday, the Irish did what they do best: pushed the ball in transition, shared the ball and dominated in the lane. Post players Jessica Shepard and Brianna Turner combined for 41 points (on 17-for-25 shooting) and 22 rebounds. Arike Ogunbowale led Notre Dame with 23 points.

Not surprisingly, the game was decided early. Notre Dame jumped to a 29-12 lead after one quarter and then scored the first eight points of the second to put it away. Twenty-six of the Irish's first 37 points came in the paint, and Notre Dame finished with 58 points inside 15 feet.

The Irish, who rank fourth in the country with 20.6 assists per game, had 24 assists on their 36 field goals. The Irish dominated in the same way in the ACC tournament, winning by an average of 21 points per game en route to the title.

All five starters average at least 13.5 PPG this season, so the most surprising part of Saturday's win was senior Marina Mabrey failing to score (0-for-3 from field, seven assists).

With nine points and 11 rebounds, 6-foot-3 sophomore Mikayla Vaughn more than compensated and provided some bench production that Notre Dame hasn't always gotten but might need later in the tournament.
