Mike Berardino, Indianapolis Star Published 3:53 p.m. ET March 23, 2019

SOUTH BEND – An already excruciating 13-day layoff since her team steamrolled its way through the ACC tournament was made even testier for Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw in recent days.

“You wouldn’t have wanted to live with me this week,” McGraw said after Saturday’s 92-50 opening-road NCAA tournament win over Bethune-Cookman. “I think (husband) Matt’s hair went completely gray.”

Senior forward Jessica Shepard dealt with a lingering illness that was finally diagnosed as strep throat on Tuesday. She didn’t return to practice until Thursday.

Senior point guard Marina Mabrey hyperextended her knee on Monday and was a game-time decision.

Backup guard Abby Prohaska injured a finger on Sunday and then rolled her ankle on Friday, making her a last-second call as well.

True, the reigning national champions ran the table a year ago despite four season-ending knee injuries, but as McGraw noted the uncertainty of the past week proved particularly grating, even after capturing the top seed in the Chicago Region.

“It was frustrating because, after all we went through last year, it was different,” McGraw said. “They were out for the year. This year we’d go to practice every day going, ‘Who’s going to practice?’ Just a lot of little things that you can’t control, so you just have to move on. I had a hard time moving on this week.”

All three question marks played against the overmatched Wildcats, making their first NCAA tournament appearance, but they had varying degrees of success for Notre Dame (31-3).

Mabrey had seven assists but was held scoreless in 23 minutes, missing all three of her 3-point attempts. She wore a wrap on her knee and must be closely monitored heading into Monday’s second-round game against No. 9 seed Michigan State, an 88-87 winner over Central Michigan.

Prohaska, the freshman heir apparent at point guard, managed just two points in her 20 minutes. She also drew McGraw’s ire during the second quarter after getting lost on defense.

“Abby!” McGraw barked across the court, arms spread wide as she bolted up from the bench and glared. “What was that?”

Things went better for Shepard, the multi-faceted weapon who moves so fluidly at 6-4. She roared out of the gates with a 12-point first quarter and finished with a double-double (22 points, 13 rebounds) in 26 minutes.

Shepard added four assists and rugged defense while shrugging off the vestiges of an illness she’s dealt with before.

“It’s strep, so you kind of go with it,” Shepard said. “I’ve had strep a lot.”

Chasing a 5-11 freshman reserve named Tania White early in the fourth quarter, Shepard flashed her trademark sense of humor in such a way that both players were still laughing as they changed ends of the court.

“She went to make a backdoor cut and I was a little bit behind her,” Shepard recalled. “I was just like, ‘No, no, no. None of that right now,’ and we both just kind of laughed about it. We all thought it was funny.”

The moment of levity was needed for Shepard as her hometown of Fremont, Neb., deals with historic flooding that has devastated much of the region. Shepard and her immediate family feel fortunate to have dodged the worst of the damage to this point.

Her parents, Mark and Kim, even planned to make the trip over to watch the start of the final NCAA tournament run for a decorated group of seniors. If flooding back home couldn’t keep them away, you knew their talented daughter wasn’t about to miss a tournament game with strep.

“I was going to play regardless,” Shepard said between bites of popcorn in the home locker room. “Strep’s no fun, but they did a great job of getting me to the doctor quick and starting me on antibiotics just to get it out of my system.”

After averaging 16.5 points and 9.9 rebounds over the first 33 games, Shepard is a vitally important cog in this Notre Dame machine.

“She’s unstoppable,” star guard Arike Ogunbowale said. “She’s really dominant. I knew she was going to play. She’s a great rebounder, a great passer in the post. She talks, she helps us out. She’s intense.”

So, of course, is the Irish’s Hall of Fame coach. Holding a slim 9-7 lead midway through the first quarter, Notre Dame expected (and got) an earful during the timeout chat.

A 38-5 run ensued.

As McGraw walked off the court at halftime, a 51-19 lead no solace for her perfectionist nature, she did so with a flat expression and eyes burning holes in the floor. More chatting followed.

“We knew she was going to be intense,” Ogunbowale said after going for 23 points on just 15 floor attempts. “She’s intense — regular season, postseason. It’s always business. It doesn’t matter who we play, it’s always business.”

Afterward, McGraw lamented her team’s 11 turnovers and lack of movement on offense as well as their inability to stay with Angel Golden (25 points) on the perimeter. It didn’t matter that Golden missed 14 of her 3-point attempts; it was the six she made that irked McGraw.

“We lost sight of her quite a few times,” McGraw said. “Overall, we’ve got a long way to go to be a good defensive team.”

Did we mention this was Notre Dame’s 10th straight win since losing twice in a four-game span six weeks ago? The Irish have won those 10 games by an average of exactly 30 points.

Opponent was very awed and inadequate. Marina took the day off; Jackie half took the day off. Nice to see so many minutes for the bench. Hope that this doesn't get our girls snoozing to start the next game --- Muffet will have to motivate. (If it's MSU --- CMU is just too small.)

I'm not worried. Since the UNC game the ladies have been dialed in. Nice to see others get some tourney experience.

The opponent was grossly overmatched.

ND's RPI is #1, Bethune-Cookman's #201.

ND's SOS is #1, Bethune-Cookman's #346 (out of 351 teams).

Marina took the day off

Did she? She played 22 minutes despite hyperextending her knee in practice Monday. It was a pre-game decision to play her. She played with a knee wrap (black one, right knee) Although she didn't score, she attempted only 3 shots, all outside the arc, she had 7 Assists in 22 minutes those 7 Assists lead ND AND BCU as the game high. That's a rate of 13 assists for a full game. Doesn't strike me as taking the day off.

Abby was in early and often for Marina although Abby was also playing banged up. Abby injured a finger Sunday and rolled an ankle late in the week and was another "pre-game decision" to play. She only scored 2 points but was 1 for 1 from the floor, secured 3 rebs and had 1 assist and one steal.

I don't think Jackie too a "half day off" either. No she didn't score 30 points but she Muffet have rolled up the score ala Geno and keep in the first team?

Shepard had strep throat during the week. She was taken to the infirmary and administered antibiotics. She was cleared to play and had a DOUBLE DOUBLE and went Coast to Coast on one play.

Turner missed a Double Double by one rebound. She was credited with the needed rebound during the game but it was changed to another player later on. She also had 5 blocks against a badly outclassed opponent.

Vaughn who has had a good year blocking shots but not much else had her best game. She missed a Double Double by a point but not because of bad shooting. She was 4-8 from the field, 50%, and 1-1 from the Line. She also had a block.

Rico like everyone else also played limited time but still beat her average scoring 23.

Hope that this doesn't get our girls snoozing to start the next game --- Muffet will have to motivate.

Muffet will have to motivate. Why? Because they didn't score 120?

Everyone knew this was the weakest opponent of the year. BCU's best win was against Charlotte ranked #105. They had NO quality wins and had Bad Losses to Ga Southern, ranked 287, Norfolk St. #251, and South Carolina State #299.

MSU is a much tougher opponent and has won some good games. These players are motivated. So are the coaches. Did you read the article on how ND coaches scout opponents? After beating BCU. The coaching staff remained an watched MSU's game. McGraw stayed for only a half. The other coaches scrutinized the entire game.

They may get beat due to injury or a career game by an opponent but it won't be due to lack of motivation nor preparation.

GO IRISH!

Beat Sparty!

Noie: What goes into a Notre Dame women's basketball scouting report? A lot of work, and a slice of worry
By Tom Noie South Bend Tribune Mar 24, 2019

No matter how complete the report runs, or a certainty that everything has been adequately addressed, Notre Dame associate women’s basketball coach Niele Ivey always has that same sinking feeling, if only for a moment.

It arrives minutes before tip-off. It will arrive again Monday when No. 1 seed Notre Dame (31-3) hosts No. 9 Michigan State (21-11) in a second-round NCAA tournament game at Purcell Pavilion (7 p.m., ESPN). The winner advances to the Chicago Regional semifinals and a Saturday afternoon date against No. 4 Texas A&M (26-7).

For two full days, ever since Michigan State edged Central Michigan on the heels of Notre Dame’s first-round win over Bethune-Cookman, Ivey has lived nothing but green and white. Ivey’s in charge of the scouting report for Monday’s game. She’s seen it all; she believes she’s covered it all.

But when it’s go time and there’s nothing left she can do, she’ll still ask herself, “What if?”

If Hall of Fame head coach Muffet McGraw, her college coach, her mentor, her boss, doesn’t wheel around during the opening possessions Monday with a “What the ….” expression aimed her way, Ivey will feel even more confident with all the time and effort she put in to prepare the Irish.

She’ll be certain everything has been covered. Then again….

“I’m always thinking, ‘I hope I went over everything,’” Ivey said Sunday afternoon while her stir-fry lunch sat cooling in a take-home box in a Purcell Pavilion hallway that doubled as a team dining area. “You never know.”

Ivey’s work on Michigan State actually started early last week, hours after the South Bend section of the tournament’s first two rounds were revealed. Associate head coach Carol Owens took the scout for Bethune-Cookman. Ivey grabbed Michigan State. Fellow associate coach Beth Cunningham corralled Central Michigan.

Ivey worked a little every day on Michigan State. She watched every game this season. She produced pages of notes on offensive tendencies. On defensive principles. On trends. On preferences. On personnel. By Saturday, all she could do was sit and wait.

And watch. While many Irish fans headed for home following Saturday’s first-round win, Ivey slid into a seat on press row for Michigan State and Central Michigan. She could have just had the team’s video coordinator download the game to her laptop. But it’s not the same. Too sterile.

“It was nice to watch it live,” Ivey said. “You get a good vibe of the flow and what they like to do.”

If Michigan State won, Ivey would go into overdrive; if Central Michigan won, it would be Cunningham who’d need some coffee.

“It’s either a lot of work, or no work,” Ivey said.

For Ivey, it was Door No. 1. She spent Saturday afternoon and evening reviewing that game’s cut-ups. More offensive sets. More defensive looks. More personnel. More notes. Midnight came and went. She traded text messages with McGraw for hours. What do you think? What do you see? Like? Dislike? Concerns? Back and forth Ivey went, from her laptop screen to her notepad to her phone. More film. More words. More texts. More work.

“I was up all night,” she said.

Ivey finished her initial scout around 1:30 a.m. She was awake again at 6 to lock it all down. There have been times when she’s worked straight through nights to make sure it’s all right. But sometimes, that’s just wrong.

“You get sleepy and you’re like, ‘I don’t even know what I watched for the past hour,’” Ivey said. “The hardest scout is when you have only 48 hours.”

Ivey was handed a five-hour bonus for this one. From the time Michigan State won Saturday to the time the ball is tipped Monday, it will be 53 hours between games. Nearly all of that is spent on the opponent. Ivey culls together video of all the team’s offensive sets. Then all the defensive sets. Then highlights three or four of their pet plays. What the Irish might be able to run against man. Against zone.

Ivey had the Michigan State report ready for McGraw by Sunday’s 11:15 a.m. staff meeting. Ivey met with the players at noon for an early strategy session. Following that afternoon’s practice, she’d show them five minutes of film on MSU’s personnel — you’ve got this player; you’ve got that one — before a brief dinner break.

Later Sunday, Ivey would have a detailed analysis ready for the Irish. It figured to run six pages. There were times during Ivey’s earlier days as an assistant when it was twice that long. The players often protested. She listened.

“I work smarter now,” Ivey said. “I know what Coach needs. You try to keep it short; I try not to be too wordy, but sometimes it gets out of control.”

Wordy writers nod in agreement, but we digress.

Fortunately for Ivey, Monday’s opponent is familiar. The teams played each of the two previous seasons. In October, Notre Dame traveled to East Lansing for one of those top-secret-not-for-public-knowledge scrimmages against coach Suzy Merchant’s squad. Ivey has gone through her notes from those previous games and that scrimmage. She already kind of knew what to expect from MSU, and vice versa.

“We’ve seen them up close and personal,” Merchant said of Notre Dame. “Every time you play them, they’re extremely talented. They’re kind of a nightmare matchup, for sure.”

Ivey didn’t plan to have any nightmares Sunday. She budgeted a few more hours of rest than the previous night. Who was she kidding? This time of year, everyone tosses and turns. Head coaches. Assistants. Associates. When it’s win or go home, sleep patterns suffer.

“We’re always thinking,” Ivey said. “Your mind is always working; you’re still processing — did I do a good job of preparing everybody? That’s what you carry.”

Ivey also carries the same rock-solid confidence she had as an Irish point guard. Back during her playing days, she was cement strong in her game, her mind ready for anything. She often was; same holds true as a coach.

“You’ve got to be confident when you walk on the floor, instill that confidence in the team that they can do it,” Ivey said. “If Plan A doesn’t work, you might have to go to Plan B.

“Hopefully, we never have to go to Plan C, but you never know.”

Deep down, Ivey does. So do the Irish.

“This senior class, they’ve seen everything,” she said. “We’ll be ready for this one.”
