Ogunbowale becomes all-time Irish scorer in rout of Duke
Associated Press

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On a historic Thursday evening for Arike Ogunbowale, Muffet McGraw was just as pleased by the double-doubles she received from frontliners Brianna Turner and Jessica Shepard in No. 5 Notre Dame's 89-61 rout of Duke.

"What a momentous day," McGraw said after Ogunbowale scored 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting to become Notre Dame's all-time leading scorer, passing South Bend native Skyler Diggins-Smith. "I'm really happy for Arike -- she didn't waste any time and keep us in suspense too long. But our game plan was high-low (with Shepard and Turner) and to really exploit that."

The 6-foot-4 Shepard had 24 points (on 10-of-19 shooting) and 10 rebounds -- her 11th double-double of the season and 51st of her career that started at Nebraska -- and the 6-foot-3 Turner had her seventh double-double of the season -- 21 points and 15 rebounds -- and three blocks on the historic night for their teammate.

"It's certainly a blessing, especially with all the great players who have come through this school," said Ogunbowale, who received a pregame message from Diggins-Smith, who is in Dallas awaiting the birth of her first child. "I just wanted to focus on the game, not worry about (the record) and get the win."

The Irish (25-3, 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) got more than a win. They moved into solo possession of first place in the ACC, a half-game ahead of Louisville, a team they beat on Jan. 10, and both teams got help from Virginia Tech, which beat the other two-loss ACC team, No. 14 Miami, 73-65.

Ogunbowale entered the night needing 11 points to match Diggins-Smith, who played for McGraw from 2009-13 and finished with 2,357 points. The record-setting basket came after a steal by Ogunbowale, who swished a shot from the free-throw line over Duke's Haley Gorecki with 8:49 left in the second quarter. Ogunbowale now has 2,371 points.

"She's the face of our program," McGraw said. "When you look at what she has done for us over the past four years, it's been fun to watch her grow. When she gets the ball in transition, she's so exciting. She's taught me a lot of things about being fearless and letting things go."

Notre Dame had a video tribute for Ogunbowale at the media break following the basket that delighted the Purcell Pavilion crowd of 8,399 which included the Ogunbowale family from Milwaukee.

Notre Dame used a 22-0 run at the end of the second quarter and beginning of the third -- its 36th run of 10 points or more -- to put away the Blue Devils (11-14, 3-10), who lost their third straight.

Miela Goodchild scored a career-high 26 points with the help of a school-record eight 3-pointers to lead Duke, which became the first Notre Dame opponent to have a run of 10 points or more this season. Leaonna Odom scored 12 points and Jade Williams 10 as Notre Dame held Duke leading scorer Gorecki to six points, 12 under her average.

"We didn't have any illusions about stopping (Ogunbowale) tonight," Duke coach Joanne McCallie said. "Her legacy is long and still going. When Notre Dame plays like this, it's a cut above everyone else. Ever since they lost to Miami, they've been a different team and gone back to the basics. They are using everybody, including their posts, a little more."

BIG PICTURE

Duke: The Blue Devils, whose last victory was an 85-69 triumph on Feb. 7 over the same North Carolina team that beat Notre Dame 78-73 on Jan. 27 in Chapel Hill, had just eight players dressed because of injuries. McCallie's squad shot just 39.3 percent (11 of 28) in the first half and just 28.6 percent (4 of 14) in the second quarter and committed 12 turnovers. But McCallie was pleased with the shooting effort of Goodchild, a freshman from Australia who scored her 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including 8-of-14 from beyond the arc.

"Miela showed incredible character playing against a team that was trying to hunt her defensively with different defenders," McCallie said. "Miela found a way to be out there and attacking."

Notre Dame: Coming into the game trailing Diggins-Smith by 11 points, Ogunbowale made sure she wouldn't have the record on her mind when she scored 10 points in the first quarter on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2 of 3 3-pointers. After her first basket, however, she came up with a steal, raced down the floor and missed a layup.

"I wasn't focused on that," Ogunbowale joked. "But I got it back."

UP NEXT

Duke: Sunday at Wake Forest.

Notre Dame: Monday at No. 18 Syracuse.

Ogunbowale breaks all-time scoring record

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – History was made on Thursday night inside Purcell Pavilion as a new Notre Dame all-time scoring record holder was crowned in senior guard Arike Ogunbowale. The No. 5 Fighting Irish (25-3, 12-2) scored 52 first half points against the Duke Blue Devils (11-13, 3-9) before rolling to the 89-61 final.

For the second time this season, three Irish players scored over 20 points, led by the new scoring leader in Ogunbowale. The Milwaukee native tallied 25 points and now possesses 2,371 in her career, flying past Skylar Diggins-Smith's record of 2,357 points.

Joining Ogunbowale in the spotlight tonight were posts Brianna Turner and Jessica Shepard. Turner tied her season high of 21 points while setting a new season best in rebounds with 15, achieving her seventh double-double. Shepard notched 24 points and 10 rebounds, earning her 11th double-double on the year and her fourth in the last five games.

"I'm really happy for Arike. She didn't waste any time and didn't keep us in suspense too long. What a momentous day," Karen & Kevin Keyes Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said. "Offensively, we were really on point today."

How It Happened
The Irish scored seven of its first 12 points off of turnovers, claiming a narrow 12-9 lead at the 3:38 mark. Then Notre Dame recorded a 9-0 run in less than a two minute stretch before extending its lead to 27-15 at the end of the quarter. Both Shepard and Ogunbowale boasted 10 points after the first, as the latter sat one point away from tying the scoring record.

Then at the 8:49 mark in the second, history was made - Ogunbowale surpassed the record with a pull-up jumper at the free-throw line, bringing the crowd to its feet. The senior went on to score the first six points of the quarter before ending the half with 19 total points, tying her first half season high.

Furthermore, Notre Dame ended the last 4:43 of the half on a 16-0 run, claiming a 52-25 advantage at the midway point. The Irish forced 13 first half turnovers in which they converted into 18 points. Both Shepard (14 points) and Turner (13 points) joined Ogunbowale in double figures, as Turner already achieved a double-double with 10 rebounds.

The Irish, who kept the Blue Devils off the board for the final 5:07 of the half, extended the scoreless streak for the first 3:42 of the third, scoring the first six points of the second half.

However, the Blue Devils displayed some fight over the second half of the third quarter, scoring 12 straight points, before an Ogunbowale buzzer-beating layup ended the run to remain up 64-44 heading into the fourth. Duke's run marked the first time the Irish defense had surrendered a 10-0 run or higher this season.

Notre Dame responded by recording a 17-3 scoring stretch in the fourth, before picking up win No. 25 overall and No. 12 in league play.

"It's really a blessing (to become the all-time scoring leader)," Ogunbowale said. "To think of all the great players that have come through this school, to be at the top of that list is an honor, especially to do it at Notre Dame."

Congratulations to Arike. When she's hot she's impossible to defend. She was hot tonight.

I noticed that Muffet was sure to praise Arike, but noticed the quick shift to make sure we all realized how central the post-post play is to what happens. Also i noticed that, as usual, when it's not needed "Big Game Jackie" remains contentedly quiet and all-team. Marina did that too this game.

It was nice to see Abby take a few shots and make a couple. She is our only dependable bench player --- it is good that she understands defenses so well and actually solidifies ours in certain zones. ... and is a great example to the others of scrapping on the floor.

I'm hoping very hard for Vaughn to emerge healthy and aggressively. I think that she DOESN'T understand the defenses well enough for Muffet's liking --- but Mykala seems to WANT to play hard so I'm fingers-crossed that she becomes our post substitute here late season --- that is at least not foolish blue-skying.

If we can afford to sub Abby and Mykala for significant minutes to spell the fab five, we might just survive this task coming up (ACC + NCAA) without a true point guard nor dependable positional sub. It really is a tough ask though for Marina and Jackie to hold up vs irritating lightning fast pressers.

If I were a guard-rich opponent, I'd try to press our brains out. And if I were Muffet I'd be preparing against that with pass-oriented over-the-top press-breaking featuring Jess at half court. She has the perfect combo of good hands, good head, and strong body to make that work safely and even dangerously.
