No. 2 Irish Spread the Wealth in 76-55 Win over Georgia Tech
Notre Dame records a season high 30 assists on 34 made field goals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 2 Notre Dame women's basketball team (14-1, 2-0) dished out a season high 30 assists on 34 made field goals to defeat Georgia Tech (11-4, 1-1), 76-55, on Sunday inside McCamish Pavilion. It marked the first time the Irish recorded 30 assists since a win over Central Michigan back on Dec. 22, 2013.

All five Irish starters finished in double figures for the fifth time this season, as Notre Dame shot over 50 percent for the seventh consecutive game (.548).

Jessica Shepard led the Irish in scoring for the first time this season with 19 points to go along with her seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Arike Ogunbowale doubled her previous high in career assists with 12 this afternoon, to go with her 13 points. Brianna Turner led the squad in rebounds and steals with nine and three respectively, to go with her 11 points.

How It Happened
Notre Dame found itself down 8-2 in the early minutes, before finding its offensive rhythm to finish the last seven minutes of the quarter outscoring Georgia Tech, 16-7. Jessica Shepard led the team in scoring for the period with eight points, giving Notre Dame an 18-15 lead.

The Irish started the second quarter on an 8-0 run, which extended into a 17-4 advantage. Notre Dame ultimately outscored the Yellow Jackets 21-7 in the quarter, limiting its opposition to just 3-of-14 shooting in the period to take a 39-22 advantage into the half.

The Irish registered 30 of its 39 halftime points in the paint, led by 12 points from Shepard and eight points from Brianna Turner. However, the most impressive stat by half, 17 assists on 17 made field goals for the Irish.

In the third, Notre Dame shot out of the gates again, jumping out to an 11-4 start. The Irish finished the period making seven of its last nine shots, but four late turnovers resulted in a fairly even-scoring quarter. Thus, the Irish took a 58-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

There, the Irish continued its theme for the game, starting the fourth on a 7-0 run, five of which were scored by Ogunbowale. Notre Dame extended the run to 16-5 before rolling to the 76-55 final.

Mabrey finished the game with 11 points and four assists while Jackie Young notched 10 points and four rebounds. Mikayla Vaughn, who entered the game in the second half, finished with eight points and four boards.

Player of the Game
Shepard led the team in scoring for the first time this season with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. The senior also collected seven rebounds, two blocks and tied her season high in assists with six.

ND has played a very tough schedule with one loss ... when Mabrey was recovering from an injury.

UL is undefeated playing a soft schedule to date . They've only played 2 ranked teams beating #19 ASU by 2 and #19 UK by 5. ASU was at a neutral site while UK was in Louisville.

That said, there's only 7 points separating ND and UL. Two of those points are from ND's 12 First Place Votes to UL's 10. The balance is ND getting some 2nd Place votes behind Con's or BU's First Place Votes while UL is presumably third on some of those ballots.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Another top-2 showdown at home awaits the University of Notre Dame women's basketball team on Thursday, Jan. 10. The new No. 1 Fighting Irish (14-1, 2-0) will host No. 2 Louisville (14-0, 2-0) in a 7 p.m. ET primetime matchup on ESPN. Thursday's contest will be a Green Out with rally towels going to the first 4,000 fans. Limited tickets remain, so to purchase please call 574-631-7356 or visit the Murnane Family Ticket Office at Gate 9 of Purcell Pavilion.

Notre Dame leads the all-time series against Louisville, 14-6, including a 5-2 mark at home. However the Cardinals did best the Irish twice last season, including their last encounter, a 74-72 defeat in the ACC Championship game in Greensboro. Both teams shared the ACC regular season championship last season.

RPI TOP-25 WINS
With wins over Gonzaga, Drake, Iowa and Marquette, the Irish boast four RPI top-25 victories. That number doubles the amount of RPI top-25 wins over the next highest Division I team.

No. 1 vs No. 2
Thursday's primetime matchup with No. 2 Louisville will be Notre Dame's second 1-vs-2 matchup of the season and eighth in program history. History has not sided well with the Irish, for their only win in a 1-vs-2 was back in 2001 when No. 2 Notre Dame defeated No. 1 UConn, 90-75, in the national semifinal.

In addition, this marks Notre Dame's first 1-vs-2 matchup not involving UConn since the Irish played at Baylor back on Nov. 20, 2011.

YOUNG ONE OF NATION'S BEST SHOOTING GUARDS
Junior guard Jackie Young has been highly efficient from the field this season, raising her shooting percentage to 56.7 percent. That number ranks 10th in the ACC and 32nd nationally, but more impressively, second nationally among just guards. Young only trails Villanova's guard Mary Gedaka, who is shooting 64.3 percent.

MOST EFFICIENT GAME IN PROGRAM HISTORY
Notre Dame made program history after leaving Georgia Tech with the 76-55 victory on Jan. 6. By halftime, the Irish were a perfect 17 assists on 17 made field goals and then finished the game with 30 assists on 34 made fields. That .882 assist/field-goals-made efficiency rating ranks as the best all-time in program history for a game in which the team tallied at least 30 field goals.

When only looking at games in which teams have made at least 30 field goals and 30 assists, Notre Dame's .882 mark leads the country for a single game this season.

IRISH HOT SHOOTING STREAK
Count it up, the Irish have recorded six consecutive games shooting over 50 percent from the field. As a result, Notre Dame has raised its field goal percentage from .489 to .526, which ranks second in the country.

REASON FOR HOT SHOOTING STREAK
Look no further than the fact that the Irish have recorded six straight games in which they have dished out 24 or more assists, totaling 158 in that span. Notre Dame now averages 20.1 assists per game, which leads the ACC and ranks sixth in the nation. Individually, Jackie Young leads the way, averaging 4.7 assists/game, followed closely by Marina Mabrey with her 4.5.

Jessica Shepard has dished out 17 assists over the last three games. Ogunbowale just recorded a career high 12 assists at Georgia Tech (1/6), doubling her previous career best. Lastly, Mabrey is averaging 6.0 assists over the last six games.

SPREADING THE WEALTH
When you mix the high percentage shooting with the high assist total, you get our next stat. In Notre Dame's last game (at Georgia Tech), all five starters reached double-digit points. It marked the second time the feat had been achieved over the last three games, and the fifth overall time this season. The other instances were Iowa, UConn and Binghamton.

MABREY HEATING UP
Since Dec. 16, Mabrey has been on quite the roll, getting into prime season form. Over the last six games, Mabrey has averaged 15.7 points on 59.0 percent - including 14-for-30 from three-point range aka 46.7 percent. She has also averaged 6.0 assists and 2.2 steals.

In addition, in three of said games, Mabrey has recorded all three of her 20-point scoring games, including her season high of 21 set vs Binghamton.

PROTECTING THE HOUSE
Purcell Pavilion continues to be one of the toughest venues to play in women's hoops. Over the last 105 games at home, the Irish have only lost three times, with all three coming against UConn.

Notre Dame is 473-93 all-time inside Purcell Pavilion. The Irish have sold out Purcell Pavilion 54 times and boasts a 44-10 record in those instances.

Most notably, however, has been how dominant the Irish have been in league play at home. Notre Dame has won a school-record 51 consecutive home conference games, beginning with a 66-47 win over Providence on Feb. 14, 2012, in BIG EAST play.

Mabrey is not listed among the leaders in any category although her Assist/Turnover Ratio at 2.81 ties her for 17th Place. Don't understand why she is not listed as the NCAA stats note they include games "Through games January 8, 2019" and the Georgia Tech game was on January 6th. I thought perhaps there was a minimum number of game required but there are others listed in the category that played 10 games the same as Mabrey.

Fans have bemoaned her 3 PT shooting but at .407 it's actually 10 percentage points higher than her career average and her 2nd highest ever.

Likewise fans have bemoaned her FT% which is 200 percentage points lower than last season and 170 points lower than her career average. However with 4 more FTs made she'd be at her career average of .824.

Marina looks erratic game-to-game to me. Some of that is still synchronizing into our new game flow, some of that is oppositional defensive game planning, but I'll bet that she is still getting "calm" about her new healed body. My guess is that she'll become a greater and greater version of the new Marina as the season goes, and it will happen rapidly.

By the way, something that lots of fans forget: a 33 1/3% scoring average on 3-point shots is equivalent to a 50% scoring average on 2-point shots. I believe that any coach is deliriously happy with 40% on threes, and defensive oppositions must scramble to quickly find such shooters. (so 40% is fine for stretching opponent defenses and clearing space for Jess muscling and Rico driving --- plus Jackie getting to back side rebounds. )

Then Muffet is delirious over Mabrey 3 point shooting. She started out slow the first few games back as should have been expected. Since then she's shooting 40. something from the arc. Spot on, Coach!
