Ogunbowale's 27 lead No. 5 Irish past Virginia, 83-69
9:01 PM CT
Associated Press

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- With designs on a top seeding in the NCAA Tournament, No. 5 Notre Dame knew a stumble at Virginia could be very costly.

The Irish, however, did the opposite, taking the suspense away with a game-opening 20-2 run and cruising, 83-69 on Thursday night.

"I like it. I'd like to do it every game," Irish coach Muffet McGraw said. "I don't think that's a challenge at all. I think this team is focused. They know what they have to do and with the way we can score, we're going to be tough to beat when we get that kind of a lead."

Especially with the tandem of Arike Ogunbowale and Jessica Shepard.

Ogunbowale had 27 points and eight rebounds and Shepard scored 15 with eight rebounds, and both went over the 1,500-point mark for their careers. Notre Dame (24-2, 12-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) also got 16 points from Marina Mabrey and 11 points and eight assists from Jackie Young in winning its ninth in a row.

The victory allowed the Irish to keep pace with No. 4 Louisville, an 87-52 winner at Boston College, atop the league standings.

Shepard, a transfer from Nebraska, has been a huge part of Notre Dame's success.

"Jess really started out great. She's done so many things. I don't know where we would be without her," McGraw said. "We need all seven of the players that we have, but she's capable of a double-double every single night and she is another tough matchup."

Shepard needed just four points, and Ogunbowale needed 13 to reach the 1,500 milestone.

Felicia Aiyeotan had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Virginia (16-10, 9-4). J'Kyra Brown also scored 17 points. The Cavaliers started the night tied with No. 12 Florida State for third in the ACC, but the Seminoles beat Clemson, dropping Virginia into fourth with N.C. State.

"I'm just kind of disappointed that we've gotten ourselves into a little bit of a routine of being one type of team in one half and a totally different type of team in the second half," Virginia coach Joanne Boyle said. Her team played No. 4 Louisville close for a half two weeks ago, then got blown out in the second half. They also had a big lead at Virginia Tech four days ago and had to scramble to hang on, winning 64-62.

"We've got to change that moving forward because every team right now is playing for something," Boyle said.

The Irish started quickly, hitting four of their first five shots and attacking the basket. They led 27-11 after one period and stretched it to 37-16 midway through the second period. Of their first 37 points, 30 were scored inside, giving them a 30-6 advantage against the Cavaliers before Aiyeotan heated up after halftime.

Lauren Moses of Virginia scored nine points and became the 34th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.

BIG PICTURE

Notre Dame: The Irish put on an impressive display of versatile scoring. Mabrey hit four 3-pointers, Young was effective both driving to the basket and finding teammates and Shepard, who scored 1,112 points in two seasons at Nebraska, was dominant at times. She scored the first eight points of the second quarter. The Irish also forced 15 turnovers and had a 26-11 edge in points scored off turnovers.

Virginia: The Cavaliers lost for the third time in four games, with all three losses coming against teams ranked in the top 12. Their resume is stronger than it has been in recent years to qualify for NCAA Tournament consideration, and it would be Virginia's first trip to the tournament in nine seasons. "We've got to get back to doing the things that we do well," Boyle said.

Strong Start Leads No. 5 Irish to 83-69 Victory at Virginia :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of ND Athletics

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 5 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team used a strong first quarter at the University of Virginia to garner an instant 16-point lead in which they primarily maintained throughout the remainder, defeating the Cavaliers (16-10, 9-4) by the final, 83-69.

The Irish (24-2, 12-1), who won their season high ninth straight game, were led by junior guard Arike Ogunbowale who tallied a game-high 27 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight.

Three other Irish players finished in double-figure scoring. Junior guard Marina Mabrey added 16 points, junior forward Jessica Shepard recorded 15 and sophomore guard Jackie Young chipped in 11 in the winning effort.

"Getting out to a big lead was a key for us," Karen and Kevin Keyes Women's Basketball Head Coach said. "We had great balance. When you need a bucket Arike is someone who can get one for you.

"Getting out and running is our game. We want to run and that was important tonight because they want to slow the tempo and play at a deliberate pace and we don't want to play at that pace so it was a battle to see who was going to win. I thought we won early and then later on in the fourth we tried to use the clock in the fourth quarter and just didn't look good."

How It Happened
Notre Dame came flying out of the opening tip, starting 5-of-6 from the field to jump out to an 11-2 lead just over three minutes into the contest. The Irish continued to roll in the first, extending its hot start to a 20-2 advantage with Virginia's second field goal not occurring until the 3:35 mark.

All-in-all, the Irish tallied 10 fast-break points in the period and converted all six UVA turnovers into points (12). Jackie Young and Arike Ogunbowale led the way with nine points each.

Jessica Shepard took over the second quarter, leading the Irish on an 8-0 run midway through the period, in which she scored six points in said stretch. Shepard went on to finish 7-of-8 for 14 points for the first half, handing the Irish a 46-27 lead over the Cavaliers.

Virginia cut the deficit to 15 points, 49-34, at 7:24 in the third, but the Irish shut the door on the rally by responding with a 10-0 run, thanks to five points each from Mabrey and Ogunbowale.

Notre Dame entered the final period up 67-48. Ogunbowale, who leads the Irish in fourth quarter scoring this season, poured in seven more points over the final 10 minutes to help the Irish put the game away, winning by a final score of 83-69.

Player of the Game
For the second straight game, Arike Ogunbowale tallied 27 points, this time converting 11-of-20 attempts from the floor and shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. The 11 made field goals are tied for the second most she has made in a game this season.

Stat of the Game
The Irish tallied 10 fast break points in the first quarter alone, finishing with 18 tonight, one shy of their season high. It marked the sixth straight game in which the Irish have tallied double-digit fast break points.

Notes
Notre Dame leads the all-time series vs Virginia, 6-2, including the winners of six straight. The Irish are 2-1 all-time in Charlottesville and have not lost to UVA since joining the ACC.
Irish are 74-3 all-time in ACC play.
With tonight's victory, the Irish captured their 13th win away from home this season.
Notre Dame earned its ninth straight win, which marked a season high.
Jessica Shepard recorded her 21st game in double-figures with 15 points.
Arike Ogunbowale netted her 17th game with 20-plus points, which continues to lead all players in the ACC. Ogunbowale finished with 27 points.
Both Shepard and Ogunbowale joined the 1,500 career points club in tonight's victory.
Both Jackie Young and Marina Mabrey earned their 19th games in double figures with 11 points and 16 points, respectively.
Young tied her career high of eight assists tonight. Young is averaging 6.8 assists over the last five games.
The Irish have tallied double-digit fast-break points in six consecutive contests. Notre Dame registered 10 fast-break points in the first quarter alone tonight, finishing with 18 for the game, one shy of its season high.
Notre Dame has shot at least 50 percent from the field in five straight games.

Up Next
The Irish play their regular-season road finale at Boston College at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 18. The game will air live on ACC Network Extra.

This has to be one of Muffets best coaching jobs yet.

No doubt. Mike Brey loses his best players and his team starts to run around the court like a chicken with its head cut off; Muffet loses her best player, 2 more players to torn ACLs, has just 7 scholarship players because of injury, and she still has her team in the top 5 (with playing the hardest schedule in the country), tied for first place in the ACC, and has her team set up for another #1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

She was dealt with a bad hand for this season from the very beginning:
1.) Brianna Turner, understandably, sits the year out because of her ACL
2.) Erin Boley, who would've played a lot this season, transferred to Oregon
3.) Mychal Johnson, Lili Thompson, and McKayla Vaughn all tear an ACL.

Almost every starter is playing 35+ minutes each game; will they run out of gas in March? That is really my only concern for this team. With the 6-7 girls that do play and with how they have steadily improved all season, I think they can make a run in the tournament.

As long as Muffet is dealt any bad hands next season, that is a team that could be really, really good. Your starting lineup could be Mabrey-Arike-Jackie-Shepard-Turner; good freaking luck stopping that. There isn't a true PG in that lineup, so I wouldn't be surprised if a true frosh PG finds her way in the starting lineup and Shepard gets moved to being the first one coming off the bench.

Jackie Young will not get the full recognition that she deserves (though she will get a lot) but she, Marina, and Kat are the glue that holds this together and makes it look like basketball.

Jackie is the most likely player to make a great defensive play (a straight stop or a great help-out), a seriously key rebound, a ball-changing hustle play, an unselfish penetration-and-pass.

What a player. Give me a bunch of Jackies, Marinas, and Kats, and a shotblocker (Brianna), and some mildly-well-behaved scorer (whomever) and I'll rule the Connecticut-less world. Get Maddy Cable another year of eligibility, and I'll rule the whole world.

Jackie and Maddy were BBall sisters separated at birth. (Yeh, I know, they don't look like sisters, but I'll bet that they would have LOVED playing ball together ........ sweet dreams.)

ACL UPDATES
Graduate student Lili Thompson’s Notre Dame playing career is definitely over, McGraw said, while three other Irish players recovering from torn anterior cruciate ligaments are each making encouraging progress toward potential returns next season.

On Dec. 31, Thompson became the fourth individual on the team in less than 10 months to suffer an ACL injury.

She indicated in January that she was at least considering petitioning the NCAA for an extra season of playing eligibility based on the injury occurring in her final planned year.

“That’s not gonna happen,” McGraw said of Thompson returning. “She’s just played too many games.”

Thompson engaged in three full seasons at Stanford before sitting out last year and joining Notre Dame this season. She appeared in ND’s first 14 games, averaging 5.9 points and a team-leading 4.6 assists in 27 minutes per outing.

Turner was injured last March during the NCAA Tournament. She’s expected back for a final season next winter after sitting out all of this season.

Senior guard Mychal Johnson was injured in late October, shortly before the season, and freshman center Mikayla Vaughn was sidelined in late November after playing six games.

Vaughn maintains four years of eligibility based on how early into the season her injury occurred.

Johnson has a year of eligibility left, but is “weighing her options and hasn’t made a decision yet,” on whether to return, according to McGraw.

“Mychal’s doing really well, is way ahead of schedule,” McGraw said of Johnson’s rehab. “I don’t know where Mikayla is in terms of scheduling, but she’s doing really well, too. Both are doing great.”

McGraw said that Turner recently received her brace and is “allowed to do a little more.”

“She hasn’t been allowed to practice,” McGraw said, “and I don’t know if she will be (before the season’s over), but she can do a little more individually.”

NOW

Game 27: #5/4 Notre Dame (24-2, 12-1) at Boston College (7-19, 2-11)
When: Sunday, Feb. 18 | 1:00 pm ET
Where: Chestnut Hill, Mass. | Conte Forum (8,606)
Watch: ACCN Extra Stream
Listen: Pulse FM 96.9 / 92.1 | Bob Nagle (PxP)

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The last road contest of the regular season awaits the No. 5 University of Notre Dame women's basketball team on Sunday, when the Irish (24-2, 12-1) make the trek to Boston College. If victorious over the Eagles (7-19, 2-11), the Irish would claim its 14th win away from home this season.

Sunday's tip is set for 1 p.m. ET, once again streaming live on ACCN Extra.

LAST TIME VS BOSTON COLLEGE
The Irish used a dominant 30-point third quarter to surge past the Eagles at home, 89-60, back on Jan. 14. Jessica Shepard finished with 24 points and eight rebounds. Marina Mabrey set a season high eight assists, while Danielle Patterson matched her career high of 11 points.

Ultimately, Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 21-5, including the winners of 11 straight.

ARIKE AT IT AGAIN
Continuing her case for ACC Player of the Year, Arike has recorded back-to-back games of exactly 27 points, doing so vs Georgia Tech (2/11) and at Virginia (2/15). It marked the first time an Irish player scored 25 points or more in consecutive games in three years -- since Jewell Loyd tallied 34 points vs Tennessee (1/19/15) then 29 points vs Georgia Tech (1/22/15).

MAGIC NUMBER IS 3
With Notre Dame and Louisville remaining deadlocked atop the ACC standings at 12-1, the magic number is three for the Irish for a co-share of the title. Three games left, three wins to claim, and the Irish have secured their fifth straight ACC regular season title and seventh straight when dating back to the final two years of the Big East. Seven straight regular season titles would be the third highest active streak in the country, only behind Baylor (seeking 8) and Green Bay (seeking 20).

HEATING UP ON THE ROAD
In the past two road games, Marina Mabrey has tied her career high of four made three-pointers, finishing with 18 points at No. 19 Duke and 16 points at Virginia. The junior has knocked down four treys on five separate occasions this season.

POINT MILESTONES CONTINUE
Notre Dame's 1,000-career point club is looking to add yet another member this season in senior Kat Westbeld, who sits just 11 points away entering the game at Boston College. Westbeld would be the 39th Irish player to achieve the feat and the third this season, joining Ogunbowale and Mabrey. Three in the same season would tie the all-time mark, previously done in 1985 by Trena Keys, Mary Beth Schueth and Carrie Bates. Speaking of milestones, both Ogunbowale and Shepard surpassed the 1,500 career point mark at Virginia on Feb. 15.

BLINK AND YOU MISS IT
Notre Dame enjoys a quick strike transition offense and that definition has been exemplified in the fact that the Irish have reached double-digit fast-break points in six straight games. In that stretch, the Irish have tallied 18 fast break points three times and a season high of 19 at No. 19 Duke.
