Enjoy it while I can. If Muffet gets us to the final four with this severely numbers-truncated squad (and only two people who look even vaguely like guards), she is runaway coach-of-the-year.

Watched the second half of this game. Mixed emotions.

+: Nice win over a very good team.

Jessica was/is a bully girl. DePaul had no one at all to deal with her. Very smart player too. If we had a typical ND team of previous decade, she'd be AA easily.

Marina was the only person who looked like a Muffet McGraw cool-as-ice team integrator. NO ONE else can floor manage this team. NO ONE else is paid attention to by Arike.

Kat's doing all she can, bless her. She's obviously limited in mobility beyond her not exceptional footspeed anyway.

Arike came through with solid O-play in the second half. Good on.

-: People who can play defense on this team are to be counted on one finger now that Jackie is hurt.

How the He!l DID she get hurt? She's playing with a mask and it's OBVIOUSLY really bothering her. Muffet can't afford NOT to play her as we are a six player team as is.

Lili has little idea how to play help defense and Arike never has. Both Kat and Jessica are really slow afoot, and Jessica looks like that aspect wasn't coached where she played. Some of the most nerve cringing matador defense and absent-minded off-the-ball daydreaming that I've seen at ND went on. Muffet had to call TO twice down the stretch because of bonehead DPlay.

Lili, stunningly, is not a very good POINT guard. I think that Muffet should just give up on that and let her play wing with Marina playing out of position at point.

This team is more and more fragile. We are going to get beat by 20+ one of these games. All it will take is Marina getting in foul trouble, Arike seeing herself as Supergirl to the rescue, and the opponent having someone to control Jessica. Bigs to control Jessica exist out there. Arike is easily revertible to Gunner Girl. Only Marina refusing to get into foul trouble (or sick) can save us.

But we won. Muffet grimaced at the end, shook the opponents' hands, and stormed straight into the locker room.

I felt the same way. (Praying for Jackie to shake her injury and fear; Kat to get to where she can run many minutes; Lili to remember who she was two years ago; Mychal to get back after holidays and she and Brianna to make it by tournament time --- that's all I want from basketball Santa.)

Shepard Named ACC Player of the Week
Earns first weekly ACC honor

Dec. 18, 2017

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – It certainly came as no surprise when the Atlantic Coast Conference came knocking on Monday afternoon, announcing Notre Dame junior forward Jessica Shepard as its women’s basketball player of the week. The honor marks Shepard’s first ACC accolade.

Shepard produced the most dominant performance of her career, pouring in a career high 39 points to go with her 11 rebounds, marking her fourth double-double of the year. Shepard knocked in a then season-high 26 points by the half on 13 made field goals, before setting a new Purcell Pavilion women’s scoring record, besting Ruth Riley’s 36 points set twice versus Miami (Feb. 22, 2000) and versus Providence (Jan. 10, 1999).

The junior’s 39 points also stood as the fourth-most points all-time, trailing only Jewell Loyd’s 41 at DePaul on Dec. 10, 2014, Ruth Riley’s 41 at Providence on Jan. 30, 1999 and Katryna Gaither’s 40 versus Ohio on Nov. 29, 1997.

Furthermore, Shepard was highly efficient from the field, converting 17-of-22 attempts, as her 17 made field goals tied for the second most in program history, while claiming the top spot on the Purcell Pavilion list.

Lastly, Shepard’s 39 points stands as the highest individual scoring performance among ACC players during regulation thus far this season.

Shepard and the rest of the Irish return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 20, when they host Marquette inside Purcell Pavilion at 3 p.m. ET.

By Anthony Anderson Tribune Correspondent Dec 19, 2017

The latest concern: Jessica Shepard’s ankle.

The junior forward, coming off a record-setting 39-point performance in Sunday’s victory over DePaul, will be “a game-time decision” for Wednesday's 3 p.m. home contest against Marquette, according to McGraw.

Shepard did not practice Monday and was not expected to do so Tuesday as she continued to undergo treatment for a turned ankle that she apparently suffered late in the 91-82 win over the Blue Demons.

“She didn’t mention it until after the game (and) she didn’t really remember doing anything,” McGraw said of Shepard. “It was just really sore afterwards.”

Young wore a makeshift protective mask in Sunday’s game. Averaging 14.5 points going in, the sophomore was held to four on 1-of-6 from the field and 2-of-4 at the line, but added seven rebounds, four blocked shots and four assists.

A custom-made mask for Young is expected to arrive in time for Wednesday’s game.

“I know it’s going to be a lot better than the one I played in Sunday,” Young said. “It was definitely hard. It was hard to see, hard to breathe, but it protected my nose, so that’s what we wanted.”

Young is expected to have to wear a mask for about six weeks.
