ND won at the Foul Line despite only converting 60%

ND won the rebound battle by 8 but MU won ORebs 15-14 despite ND having a huge height advantage.

It might be related to ND's injuries (Kat foot, Shep ankle, Jackie broken nose) but ND was largely immobile standing around a lot, not moving the ball, Rico still playing streetball. Meanwhile the much shorter team, only one starter at 6 ft, MU looked like the team with the Princeton offense. Passing it around crisply. ND had 6 more assists but also 4 more turnovers.

ND's game was to pass it inside and MU usually had a bunch of players in the paint.

Balanced scoring from both teams. All starters scored in double figures in regulation. Each also had a 6th player hit double figures.

Shepard, 13-12, Westbeld, 13-10, and Young, 10-10, all had double doubles.

MU had two players with double doubles. The 5-11 Davenport had 19 pts and 16 REBOUNDS.

I'd give Kat MVP.

Double Double, 4 ORebs, 3 assists, 1 steal all on a foot she's takes pain killers for to get on the floor. Haven't seen the minutes yet but she played a lot for a bad wheel.

No. 2 Irish Rally to Beat Marquette in Overtime :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of ND Athletics
Three Irish record double-doubles to lead Notre Dame to 91-85 victory
12/20

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The No. 2 University of Notre Dame women’s basketball team rallied to beat Marquette, 91-85, in overtime on Wednesday afternoon at Purcell Pavilion.

Kathryn Westbeld turned in her best performance of the season, stepping up in the final minute of regulation and helping the Irish (11-1) mount a comeback against Marquette (6-5).

“We showed a lot of poise,” Karen and Kevin Keyes Head Women's Basketball Coach Muffet McGraw said. “We made some mistakes, but we didn’t fall apart. We did a really good job of keeping each other up.

“In the end of the fourth quarter into overtime, Kat was an All-American. She was fabulous. She had so many big plays.”

How It Happened
Marquette went 9-of-12 from the field to open an early 20-13 lead, but the Irish settled in, holding the Golden Eagles to just one field goal on the ensuing nine possessions. In fact, the Irish went on to limit Marquette to four points from the 1:53 mark of the first quarter to the 3:58 in the second.

Offensively, Notre Dame started the second period on an 8-0 run and later used a Marina Mabrey three-pointer at 3:33 to regain the lead, 31-29. Mabrey kept the offense spurring by scoring nine points in the second quarter to boast 14 points by the half, giving the Irish a 38-37 edge at the midway point.

Led by Arike Ogunbowale’s five points, seven different Irish scorers contributed points in the third quarter. Notre Dame outscored the Golden Eagles 25-19 in the period and extended its lead to 63-56.

Trailing 73-70 with 44 seconds remaining on the clock, Kathryn Westbeld drew a foul and made the first free throw. Westbeld’s second free throw was long, but she hustled to gather the rebound and make the short jumper, evening the score at 73-73 and sending the game to overtime.

Playing in its first overtime game of the season, Notre Dame got off to a hot start offensively. The Irish used back-to-back baskets from Ogunbowale and strung together a 6-0 run in the opening minutes to lead, 79-73. Notre Dame led by at least two points for the duration of the game, ultimately defeating Marquette, 91-85.

Player of the Game
Kathryn Westbeld scored a season-high 13 points with 10 rebounds, wrapping up just four points shy of her career high (17). Westbeld picked up her first double-double of the season and fifth of her career. She has recorded double-figure points in two straight games.

The senior made a game-tying jumper with 40 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Westbeld added four points in the overtime period.

Stat of the Game

Today’s game marked the first time three Irish players had double-doubles since Dec. 10, 2014, at DePaul, where Jewell Loyd (41 points/12 rebounds), Madison Cable (20 points/11 rebounds) and Taya Reimer (15 points/11 rebounds) achieved the feat.

Notes
The Irish lead the all-time series, 33-6, against Marquette, including a 20-1 mark at home. With today’s win, the Irish have won five straight against the Golden Eagles, including 19 straight at home.
Ogunbowale extended her 20-plus point streak to a career-high-tying four games. She picked up her 12th straight double-figure scoring performance. Ogunbowale owns an ACC-leading nine games of 20-plus points this season.
Marina Mabrey collected 19 points and has nine double-digit scoring efforts this season.
Notre Dame won its 14th straight game at home.
Jackie Young recorded her third career double-double (all in 2017) with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The performance marks her ninth of double-figure points and third with 10-plus rebounds.
Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week Jessica Shepard collected her 10th rebound of the game in the fourth quarter, recording her second straight double-double and fifth of the season. Shepard finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds in the game.
Six Irish recorded double-figure points for the second time this season and first since the season opener.
With the win, Notre Dame improved to 10-6 in overtime games at Purcell Pavilion. The Irish played their first overtime game since defeating Purdue, 88-82, on March 19, 2017, in the NCAA Second Round.

Up Next
After a short break for the holidays, the Irish return to Purcell Pavilion once more to kick off ACC play, hosting Syracuse on Thursday, Dec. 28. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. ET on ACCN Extra.

BGIFs observation is exactly correct. We literally limped to this win. The injuries on our three most interior players made the deep key area wide open for easy entry passes and (adding in that Arike and Lili have no concept yet of off side defense,) MU just ran tiny circles around us as if we were made of concrete.

I even noticed Marina having to run back on transition defense deeper to pick up the oncoming MU forwards for a couple of counts until Jessica could make it back. THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM if it doesn't literally cure soon.

I believe that Jackie will regain her courage that she has lost due to the broken nose. That's one thing that should turn around. If Jessica could go as much as she did immediately after her injury, that too should cure. Kat showed moments where she looked positively bouncy, so maybe she has a chance to make it fully back --- perhaps she's just not in game shape.

Marina and Kat are so much the glue of this team that the court presence differences between them and the others are shocking. Jackie will get there. Jessica, I believe, will get there. Lili I hope will refind her basketball leadership personality. I do not believe that Arike will ever get there --- a true wild filly one lives and dies with. (and that is why Marina MUST RUN THE TEAM like a floor tyrant.)

In the end: thanks for the grit girls --- I can't imagine that Muffet has ever had a personnel nightmare like this year's.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 2/2 Notre Dame women’s basketball team (11-1) kicks off year No. 5 in ACC play when the Irish host (RV/23) Syracuse (12-1) on Thursday, Dec. 28, inside Purcell Pavilion. The contest will get underway at 7 p.m. ET and stream live on ACC Network Extra.

WHO’S HOT
Marina Mabrey has reached double-digit points in three straight games. It started with 15 points at Penn on Dec. 9, followed by a 13-point effort vs DePaul on Dec. 17, followed by 19 points in the overtime win over Marquette on Dec. 20. In the three-game stretch, Mabrey is averaging 15.7 points and 6.3 rebounds, where she also set than tied her career high of eight rebounds.

Mabrey achieved her first 5-5-5 game of the season vs DePaul, tacking on eight rebounds and six assists. Then Mabrey scored 14 of her 19 points by half vs Marquette, ultimately playing all 45 minutes before tying her season highs in assists (6), blocks (2) and steals (3).

Next, Kathryn Westbeld is certainly heating up, averaging 10.3 points and 6.0 rebounds over the last three games, raising her scoring average from 4.1 to 5.8 in the process. Westbeld has also raised her shooting percentage from .636 to .692 along the way as well.

The senior secured her first double-double of the year and fifth of her career with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the overtime win vs Marquette on Dec. 20. The game prior, Westbeld earned 10 points vs DePaul on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.

OVERTIME IN PURCELL
In the 17th overtime game in Purcell Pavilion history, the Fighting Irish emerged with the 91-85 victory over Marquette, improving their record to 11-6 in home overtime games all-time. Down 73-70 with 44 seconds left in regulation, Westbeld drew a foul and converted the first free throw before her second free throw went long, when she then grabbed the offensive board and made the put-back, evening the score at 73-73 and sending the game to overtime. Westbeld then added four more points in the overtime period along with 10 points from Ogunbowale, who finished with a team high 22 points.

Three Irish players finished with double-doubles for the first time since Dec. 10, 2014, at DePaul, when Jewell Loyd (41 points/12 rebounds), Madison Cable (20 points/11 rebounds) and Taya Reimer (15 points/11 rebounds) all achieved the feat. This time around it was Westbeld (13 points/10 rebounds), Shepard (13 points/12 rebounds) and Young (10 points/10 rebounds).

Lastly, it also marked the second time this season in which six Irish players reached double figures.

CHASING ACC HISTORY
In 2017, the Irish tied Duke’s record when they swept both the ACC regular season championship and ACC Tournament title for the fourth consecutive year. If Notre Dame were to sweep for the fifth straight year, it would set a new ACC record.

The Irish enter ACC play an impressive 62-2 against league schools since joining for the 2013-14 season. Notre Dame became the second school in league history to have only one conference loss in a three-year span (Duke 2001-02 through 03-04).

Furthermore, Notre Dame is 32-0 at Purcell Pavilion in ACC play, going 8-0 in 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17. In fact, the Irish have never lost at home to an (active at game time) ACC team in Muffet McGraw’s 30 years at the helm. The last time Notre Dame lost at the Joyce Center to a team representing the ACC was a 69-48 setback against No. 20 Maryland on Jan. 10, 1987.

When looking at conference play in general, Notre Dame is an impressive 93-3 over the last six years and has won six straight regular season conference titles (2 Big East, 4 ACC).

FINDING ANOTHER GEAR IN SECOND HALF
In the past two games, the Irish have found another gear coming out of the locker room at the half, shooting over 55 percent in the second half. Notre Dame shot 66.7 percent (16-24 FG) in the second half vs DePaul on Dec. 17, then followed that with a 56.0 percent (14-25 FG) shooting effort vs Marquette on Dec. 20.

ABOUT SYRACUSE
Syracuse enter Thursday’s game with a 12-1 record, receiving votes in the AP Poll and ranked No. 23 in the Coaches Poll. The Orange started the year 11-0 before falling to No. 5/3 Mississippi State, 76-65, in Las Vegas on Dec. 21. Syracuse ranks 10th in the country in three-point field goals made (120) and third in attempts (416).

Miranda Drummond leads the Orange with 17.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in all but one game. Tiana Mangakahia, who averages 16.0 ppg, not only leads the team, but the entire nation, in assists per game (10.8), and as a result boasts nine double-doubles on the year. Finally, Gabrielle Cooper rounds out the double-digit scorers with 11.7 ppg. Cooper ranks 33rd in the nation with her 36 made three-point field goals.

We worked on it (Wednesday) in practice quite a bit, but we just have to make a point of taking care of the ball, making the passes. … We’re just not being smart with the ball. We know how to pass through pressure, we work on it in practice. We just have to transfer that over to the game.
— Arike Ogunbowale, Notre Dame guard, on the team’s recent increase in turnovers.

Jessica Shepard suffered an ankle sprain Tuesday in practice and was walking with a pronounced limp near the end of Wednesday’s team workout.

“She’s questionable, a game-time decision,” McGraw said of the club’s top rebounder.

That’s exactly how the coach described Shepard going into ND’s last game, too.

The junior forward did end up playing in that 91-85 overtime victory over Marquette on Dec. 20 — contributing 13 points and 12 rebounds — but that appearance came three days after sustaining an ankle turn. Thursday’s, if it happens, will come just two days after a repeat setback.

“We’ve had injuries all season,” Ogunbowale declared of a team missing three players this winter due to torn ACLs, “so I think we’re pretty adaptable.”
