Madison Cable Approved for Final Season of Eligibility with Notre Dame Women's Basketball Team in 2015-16 - UND.COM - University of Notre Dame Official Athletic Site

April 17, 2015
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - As any women's college basketball fan will attest, you can't watch the NCAA Women's Final Four if you don't have cable. Ask any member of the University of Notre Dame women's basketball program and they'll tell you the Fighting Irish wouldn't have reached this year's Final Four without cable -- Madison Cable.

Days after Notre Dame completed a run to its fifth consecutive Final Four and made its fourth appearance in the NCAA championship game in five years, head coach Muffet McGraw announced Cable (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) will return for her final season of eligibility in 2015-16, following approval from the University's Faculty Board on Athletics.

"Madison has been such a valuable part of our program for the past four years and we are so thrilled that she will be with us for one more season," McGraw said. "She's a leader by example, a winner on and off the court, and a true team player who never cares about statistics or awards."

"I would like to thank the Faculty Board on Athletics and Coach McGraw for giving me the opportunity to return to Notre Dame next year," Cable said. "I've been so proud and honored to wear the Fighting Irish uniform the last three years and I'm grateful to all of my coaches, my teammates, my family and the amazing Notre Dame fans for their support. I'd also like to offer a special note of thanks to our support staff, especially our athletic trainer Anne Marquez and our strength and conditioning coach Craig Cheek, who have done a tremendous job of keeping me healthy so I can continue playing the game I love."

A 5-foot-11 guard, Cable did not play for the Fighting Irish as a freshman in 2011-12 due to stress fractures in both feet. She has recovered in time to play the past three seasons, appearing in 110 career games while averaging 5.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game with a .444 three-point percentage, the latter mark currently the second-highest in school history (Alicia Ratay set an NCAA career record by shooting .476 from beyond the arc from 1999-2003).

Cable also is in a remarkable position of having led her high school and college teams to the state or national semifinals in each of her seven seasons on the hardwood, including six appearances in the state or NCAA championship game (all but her first active season at Notre Dame in 2012-13 when the Fighting Irish lost in the NCAA semifinals). All told, with Cable in uniform, her teams have posted a combined 222-20 (.917) record, including a 108-6 (.947) mark during the past three years at Notre Dame.

Cable is completing work on her bachelor's degree in political science through Notre Dame's College of Arts and Letters. She is expected to receive her undergraduate degree during the University's commencement exercises next month and then will begin graduate studies at Notre Dame.

With Friday's announcement, Cable will be the seventh Notre Dame women's basketball player in program history to return for a fifth year, and the fourth in seven seasons, following a path previously walked by Lisa Kuhns (1989-90 season), Danielle Green (1999-2000) current assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Niele Ivey (2000-01), and more recently by Lindsay Schrader (2009-10), Brittany Mallory (2011-12) and Devereaux Peters (2011-12).

Cable is coming off her best season at Notre Dame, averaging career highs of 6.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game while playing in all 39 games, starting six times. Cable also shared team-high honors with 59 steals this past year, becoming the first Fighting Irish player since 1980-81 to lead the squad in steals while playing primarily as a reserve (walk-on guard Molly Ryan had a team-best 39 steals in that '80-81 campaign, Notre Dame's first as a Division I program).

In addition, Cable led the Atlantic Coast Conference with a career-high .476 three-point percentage, the third-best single-season mark in school history and best since Ratay's NCAA sophomore-record .547 mark in 2000-01.

Cable scored in double figures nine times in 2014-15, doubling her career output in that category. She also chalked up her first career double-double on Dec. 10 in an overtime win at No. 25 DePaul, collecting 20 points and a season-high 11 rebounds.

The versatile wing was even more valuable in the postseason, beginning with the ACC Tournament, where she averaged 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in the three-game series, culminating with 13 points in the championship game victory over No. 7/6 Florida State. Cable subsequently earned a spot on the All-ACC Tournament Second Team, one of four Fighting Irish players to receive all-tournament recognition at the event.

In the NCAA Championship, Cable traded statistical accolades for timely contributions, starting in the NCAA Elite Eight win over No. 5/6 Baylor in Oklahoma City, when she recorded a key blocked shot in transition on BU All-America forward Nina Davis, then sank the clinching basket on a runner in the lane with 57.9 seconds to play.

That served as a prelude to what will go down as one of the signature postseason moments in Notre Dame women's basketball history. Trailing No. 3/4 South Carolina by one point in the final minute of the NCAA Women's Final Four national semifinal on April 5 in Tampa, Cable alertly grabbed a missed shot by teammate Jewell Loyd, pivoted on the right baseline and tossed in a fadeaway jumper with 19 seconds remaining to give the Fighting Irish a 66-65 lead. Moments later, Cable and her teammates clamped down on the Gamecocks, preventing a clear look at a last-second game-winning shot attempt, securing Notre Dame's place in the national championship game.

Notre Dame will have four starters and 10 monogram recipients returning next season from this year's squad that posted a 36-3 record (15-1 in the ACC) and became the fourth school in NCAA Division I history to make five consecutive trips to the Women's Final Four (and seven overall), as well as the third program to make four appearances in the NCAA championship game in a five-year span.

Next season, the Fighting Irish also welcome the nation's No. 3-recruiting class, a three-player group that features three McDonald's High School All-America guards -- McDonald's High School All-America Game MVP and 2015 Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year Marina Mabrey (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan), three-time Wisconsin Player of the Year Arike Ogunbowale (Milwaukee, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels), and 2015 MaxPreps National High School Player of the Year and the reigning Indiana Miss Basketball Ali Patberg (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North).

Connecticut Huskies headline early top-25 ranking for 2015-16 women's college basketball season

#6 ND
Jewell Loyd's decision to forgo her senior season to begin her pro career changes things in South Bend. The Irish will still be very good with Brianna Turner, Lindsay Allen, Taya Reimer and Michaela Mabrey back, plus a top-five recruiting class led by Mabrey's sister, Marina, the New Jersey Player of the Year, and three-time Wisconsin Player of the Year Arike Ogunbowale. But a sixth consecutive Final Four has become far less likely.

Creme ranks ND highest of ACC teams, followed by:
#7 UL
#8 UNC
#10 FSU
#15 DUK

That was a pretty blatant foul not called on that disgusting, yellow-toothed, woman-bear-pig from UCONN

43-45 at the half...no need to say that most of the calls going UConn's way. Tends to happen when they play at home. ND looking good despite missing a couple starters.

45-43 @ half Marina Mabrey has 21. Uconn hit a big 3 right before the half and ND scored at the buzzer but it got waved off as being after the buzzer.

UConn has always been very good (i.e. Final Four contender) each year under Geno since about 1990. There have been several periods of extraordinary dominance in that time, in 2002-04, 2009-10, and 2013-15 (with Taurasi, Moore, and now Stewart, respectively). Once Stewart graduates, it's very much an open question how good UConn will be for the next couple years. I mean, they'll be good, but probably not as dominant as they have been these past couple years. ND would probably have a better team on paper next year.

The "day-to-day" status of junior forward Taya Reimer received much more clarity prior to No. 3 Notre Dame's 88-72 victory at TCU on Saturday afternoon. On the pregame Fighting Irish radio show, Fighting Irish head coach Muffet McGraw revealed that Reimer would not return to the team the rest of the 2015-16 season for "personal reasons."

Notre Dame's athletics communications associate director Chris Masters tweeted: "Taya remains a student-athlete in good standing and on scholarship at Notre Dame."

First semester final exams will be next week (Dec.14-18) prior to Christmas break. Whether Reimer opts to return to Notre Dame as a student for the second semester in January or transfers elsewhere is the next question to be answered in the coming weeks.Hampered significantly by an Achilles injury she incurred as a member of Team USA during this summer's Pan-Am Games, Reimer was unable to practice much of the preseason and averaged only 18.6 minutes in five of the nine games she appeared in (one start) prior to Saturday's meeting with the Horned Frogs. She was averaging 5.8 points and 3.2 rebounds in the contests she played.

During Wednesday night's 95-90 shootout win against No. 18 DePaul, Reimer played 16 minutes and contributed four points and three rebounds. Afterwards, McGraw indicated that the goal was to get Reimer "about four minutes a quarter" (women's basketball now features four 10-minute quarters) while she tries to rest and tries to recuperate from her injury, which the Irish head coach admitted would not be 100 percent this season.

However, Reimer did not make the trip to the Dallas/Fort Worth area versus TCU, just like she didn't travel with the Irish to No. 1 UConn a week earlier.

In the first week of last January, Reimer temporarily left the team for "personal reasons," and her sudden absence resulted in a loss at Miami, the lone conference setback for the Irish in their two seasons in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She returned a week later and played the rest of the season, finishing the campaign by averaging 10.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for an Irish team that lost to UConn in the national title game, 63-53.

Irish Defeat TCU
Oh, and by the way … No. 3 Notre Dame ended its stretch of four games in 11 days, three against ranked foes, with its 88-72 victory at TCU before heading into finals week.

Superbly balanced again, Westbeld's double-double (plus four assists) was complemented by a team high 21 points from freshman Arike Ogunbowale on 7-of-12 from the field and 7-of-10 from the foul line. Leading scorer Cable's 16 points were one short of her average, while senior Michaela Mabrey played a superb all-around game with 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc, a career high eight assists (all in the first half) and three steals.

Point guard Lindsay Allen was the fifth Irish player to reach double figures with 10 points to go with six rebounds, while freshman Marina Mabrey tallied nine points, four assists, three rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Irish roared to a 15-3 lead before seeing the Horned Frogs pull within 23-20. Notre Dame then finished the first half on a 26-12 run for a 49-32 lead at the intermission and put the game away in the third quarter by building the advantage to 75-51.

Notre Dame's next game will be at St. Joe (Pa.) on Dec. 21.

#3 Irish Take Down TCU 88-72 :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Kathryn Westbeld and No. 3 Notre Dame passed their final test on the court before going back to campus for final exams.

Westbeld had 12 points and 14 rebounds, her double-double leading five Fighting Irish players in double-figure scoring, as Notre Dame beat TCU 88-72 on Saturday in only its second game ever in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

''It's been a long stretch so far,'' Westbeld said. ''Our last game before finals, go out and give it all you have.''

The Irish (9-1), playing their fourth game in 11 days and first against an unranked team, trailed only after the game's first made free throw. They went ahead to stay with an early and fast 12-0 run in which co-captain Michaela Mabrey assisted on four consecutive baskets in about 2 minutes.

''I was kind of worried when we were warming up, I thought we were very lackadaisical, so I talked to our whole team,'' said Mabrey, who had 15 points and eight assists. ''We came out with a lot of energy that we haven't really had the past couple of games.''

Irish freshman guard Arike Ogunbowale had 21 points, while Madison Cable had 16 and Lindsay Allen 10.

Zahna Medley had 22 points and Veja Hamilton added 14 for TCU (7-3), which had its 12-game home winning streak snapped in its final game at the cramped University Recreation Center.

''When you play in front of a packed crowd, it makes the game so much more exciting,'' Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. ''It was loud.''

Notre Dame shot 55 percent, quickly settling down after freshman Marina Mabrey's air ball on an attempted 3 just 6 seconds into the game, and had 24 assists on its 33 field goals.

The Lady Frogs played all last season and the start of this season in their temporary home, going 21-4 in the gym that holds just over 1,000 spectators and is across the hall from an indoor pool. Their next game will be in their completely renovated arena across the street.

''This was a really good place for us to be,'' second-year TCU coach Raegan Pebley said.

NO PRESS

Pebley said TCU is gaining a lot of confidence in its half-court defense. Still, that's not the real reason the Lady Frogs didn't play a lot of press against Notre Dame. ''It's hard to press a five-guard lineup,'' she said. The Irish scored 65 first-half points in their last game when DePaul tried to continually press them.

Irish Duo Sweeps ACC Weekly Honors :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics
Chris Masters

Notre Dame guards Madison Cable (Mt. Lebanon, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Arike Ogunbowale (Milwaukee, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels), who were named the ACC Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday, following a vote of the conference’s Blue Ribbon Panel, which is comprised of the ACC’s 15 head coaches, local and national media members and the women’s basketball media relations directors for each school.

Cable, who in keeping with the theme wears uniform No. 22, earned her first career ACC weekly award and the first ACC Player of the Week citation by a Fighting Irish player since Feb. 23, 2015, when Jewell Loyd copped the last of her four honors a season ago. Loyd also was part of the last time Notre Dame swept both ACC weekly honors, nabbing the top player award on Jan. 26, 2015, along with then-rookie forward Brianna Turner (Pearland, Texas/Manvel).

Ogunbowale is the second Notre Dame freshman in three weeks to be selected as ACC Rookie of the Week after fellow guard Marina Mabrey (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan) was chosen on Nov. 30. This marks the fourth time in program history two different Fighting Irish players have earned conference rookie-of-the-week honors in the same season, and the first since 2008-09, when Natalie Novosel and Kellie Watson each garnered two weekly accolades.

A 5-foot-10 graduate student, Cable averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game with a double-double, .600 field-goal percentage and .500 three-point percentage while helping Notre Dame to two victories last week.

Cable chalked up her second double-double of the season (both against Top 25 opponents) with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 95-90 win over No. 18/17 DePaul on Dec. 9 at Purcell Pavilion. In the victory, she tied her career high with five three-pointers (on eight attempts) and added a season-high two blocks.

Cable then collected 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting and chipped in two steals and two assists for the Fighting Irish in an 88-72 win on Dec. 12 at TCU. Cable also drew two charges in the contest, raising her career total to 43, including a team-high six this year.

For the season, Cable leads the ACC and ranks fifth in the nation in three-point percentage (.547), while ranking third in the conference in scoring (16.9 points per game), fourth in three-point field goals per game (2.9), fifth in field-goal percentage (.583 – also 23rd in the nation) and 14th in free-throw percentage (.769).

Patberg out for the season, knee

Percentage wise that's a higher loss of key personel than the football teamed suffered this season.

#3 Irish Top Pittsburgh, 65-55, for Muffet McGraw's 800th Win :: Notre Dame Women's Basketball :: UND.COM :: The Official Site of Notre Dame Athletics

ND didn't have a good night shooting from the floor but they made up for it at the foul line. ND shot 37% from the floor, and a low 25% from the arc but had 18 more shots from the foul line sinking 15 more than Pitt for a 10 pt win.

The game was tied at the end of 3 but the Irish outscored Pitt 16-6 in the last quarter taking advantage of Pitt's foul troubles.

Turner had 20 pts, 5 rebs, 3 blks.

Despite losing two starters from the lineup that opened last April’s NCAA championship game in Tampa (and missing a third - sopphomore forward Brianna Turner - with an injury for six games), Notre Dame has scarcely missed a beat this season, led in large measure by two first-time starters in graduate student guard Madison Cable (scoring up from 6.2 to 16.0 ppg.) and sophomore forward Kathryn Westbeld (6.7 to 9.6 ppg.), as well as the reliable production off the bench from freshman guards Marina Mabrey (12.6 ppg.) and Arike Ogunbowale (11.2 ppg.).

The Fighting Irish feature a very balanced attack with four players currently posting double-figure scoring averages (and two others at 9.6 ppg.). Of those six, two are freshmen (Marina Mabrey and Ogunbowale), and two are sophomores (Turner and Westbeld).
ND’s bench play has been sharp this season, with the Fighting Irish reserves averaging 31.5 points per game, compared to 14.3 ppg. for their opponent’s bench.

ND ranks among the top 25 in six NCAA statistical categories (as of Tuesday), including four top-10 rankings — 3-point field-goal percentage (1st - .459), field-goal percentage (6th - .495), assists (8th - 19.0 apg.) and scoring offense (9th - 83.7 ppg.). The Fighting Irish also rank 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.34) and 23rd in scoring margin (+18.1 ppg.), while tying for sixth in the non-statistical measure of win-loss percentage (.929).

Including this week’s No. 3 ranking, Notre Dame has appeared in the Associated Press poll for 164 consecutive weeks (the past 94 weeks in the AP Top 10), extending a program record that dates back to the 2007-08 preseason poll, and ranking sixth in the nation among active AP poll appearances.

Notre Dame has been ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press poll for 106 of 117 weeks this decade (since 2010-11), ranking second in the nation in that category behind only Connecticut (117).
