Well, with every respect, our defense is not great. When opponents have two good outside threats [meaning good range shooters who also can put the ball on the floor], the only "stoppers" we have on the team are Maddy and Lindsay. Hannah is close to that if she doesn't have a really fast player, but usually Muffet has had to employ her guarding an opponent big --- where, other than Brianna, we have no other competent big defender.
The Mabrey sisters try hard defensively and Michaela is good enough, but Marina is still rather hopeless. Arike is a complete defensive mess so far --- terrible footwork and even attention. It is obvious that Arike was SO MUCH more physical than the girls she played in high school that she utterly dominated and intimidated them. {She will be an AA here some day when she learns to play team ball both offensively and defensively, as she will certainly become a rare 20ppg scorer.}
Our first team understands the concept of help defense --- four of them completely, but Kate only partly so [she seems to be getting the attentiveness element better, but still has a way to go even there.] Marina gets turned totally away from the ball, and who knows what Arike is doing most of the time that her man doesn't have it. Because of this, if Maddy and Lindsay are fully occupied with their responsibilities [because they have the best players], and Brianna has to challenge a potential shooter, our defense breaks down nearly every time that Hannah is not also in there --- I note that Muffet just this last game has decided this too, and played Hannah a lot for stability on both ends. I also note that she went with Michael Johnson more too; she is our next best on-the-job defender [if Muffet can get her some confidence when faced with an open shot, we may suddenly have another player.]
If we are not faced with too much thug-power against us, and when we play Brianna, Maddy, Lindsay, Michaela, and Hannah, THEN is when we will strangle the opponents' offensive game. As soon as you sprinkle in the rookies and Kate, when there are two or three of them on the floor at the same time, we go from stranglers to very ordinary [especially if the opponent is smart enough not to directly challenge Brianna.]
... on a different but as important topic: I don't have enough data points for this [because I stupidly haven't looked at it closely other than this last game], but I believe that Michaela's shooting accuracy has tanked because of mechanics. I THINK that in order to hit a high percentage from three, Michaela has to be VERY precise/disciplined {"Zen" at the moment of pulling the trigger} with both her shoulders absolutely square to the rim, and her feet settled. I'd love to be at the practices to watch this for 100 shots. We had a great player at WMU who had these problems shot-wise [she had NO other weaknesses], and it was entirely Shoulder-squaring and Foot-balance {Maria Jillian had a little "foot-kick" which destroyed almost every shot. Finding a small flaw like that cured the percentages like magic.}
... I also want to look at Arike's foul shot [again stupid undisciplined by me], but I think that there is too much noisy ball-movement in it, and some "jerk-violence." If so that should be correctable, and since she's fouled a lot, it's a big deal.
