Irish1: Agreed, but HAVING to block put-backs is a gameplan destined to bite you by fouling out your bigs. You usually get to a stage in the game where {because referees tend to toot their whistles without actually being able to see the meathouse fouls --- as an occasional amateurish ref, this tight body-to-body flailing violence was VERY difficult to get right, yet you did not want to let the offensive players' arms get pushed or hacked --- bad defensive rebounding inevitably leads either to giveaway lay-ups or key players getting put on the bench with fouls.}

Unless you are significantly longer than the opponents {so that you don't have to jump --- since almost no girls not named Jewel Loyd can really jump}, you will not consistently make those blocks without getting whistles --- Turner is long, so she gets away with this, but even she had to sit some. Loyd also tries to block these things, but by jumping, and I cringe at it. This will send her to the bench some games. That is why I'd rather Muffet develop a three center situation {Turner NOT being one, but rather the power forward}, and giving them the go-ahead to foul hard when beaten --- 15 hard fouls to give. Women tend to shoot fouls better than the guys, but the female bigs [if they are truly inside effort players] tend to be much more erratic than their smaller sisters. Playing three centers might keep them fresher to make a better DBoard effort as well.

Brianna Turner Named USBWA National Freshman of the Week - UND.COM - University of Notre Dame Official Athletic Site

Jan. 20, 2015

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - With each passing day, University of Notre Dame women's basketball freshman forward Brianna Turner (Pearland, Texas/Manvel) is collecting awards the way she plucks rebounds from the backboard.

One day after sweeping Atlantic Coast Conference Player and Freshman of the Week honors, Turner earned an even bigger prize with her second selection as the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week earlier today. Thanks to her conference honors, Turner automatically was placed under consideration for the USBWA national weekly award, which was chosen by Mel Greenberg, the USBWA coordinator for women's basketball, from among a list of NCAA Division I conference freshman-of-the-week selections.

Turner, who also was chosen for the USBWA National Freshman of the Week award on Dec. 29, is the first Notre Dame women's basketball player ever to earn that honor, let alone do so twice. Two Fighting Irish players have earned the organization's year-end National Freshman of the Year award -- Jacqueline Batteast (2002) and current junior guard Jewell Loyd (2013).

Allen Turning It On!

Allen Turning It On!

IRISH EXTRA: Allen Stays Cool When Temperature Rises - UND.COM - University of Notre Dame Official Athletic Site

1/20/15

...

Allen, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Mitchellville, Maryland, finished the game with 15 points and six assists. In her previous game, she helped the visiting Irish rally from 11 points down to knock off No. 12/10 North Carolina, 89-79. In that game, Allen scored a career-high 24 points and dished out a career-best nine assists.

One of the top shooting guards in the nation with a .580 field-goal percentage, Allen was nine of 12 from the floor against North Carolina, and five of nine against Tennessee, a combined 67 percent.

Last season, Allen averaged 6.2 points and 3.9 assists a game.

This season, Allen entered the Tennessee game averaging 11.1 points and leads the ACC with 4.8 assists a game.

Against Tennessee, Allen scored on fearless drives to the hoop against Tennessee's towering front line, and she hit pull-up jumpers.

"When she came back (in the fall), we could tell she really improved," McGraw said of Allen. "I would say she's our most improved player coming back from the summer. She's more aggressive offensively. She's trying to create more, which is something she's really good at."

McGraw said that Allen has tremendous insights when it comes to running the Irish floor game. Her 2.07 assist/turnover ratio -- third in the ACC -- certainly eases McGraw's stress level.

"Lindsay is just a great leader in terms of managing the game, slowing it down, knowing when to run," McGraw said. "She understands who needs to get the ball at the right time. `Jewell's on fire. We need to keep working that. The pick-and-roll is working. Let's get Bri in the pick-and-roll.' She really understands things late in the game, like when to use clock. I'm really pleased. Her basketball IQ is really high. Her shot looks better, and she's scoring more, and we need her to.

"Lindsay's mixing it up when it comes to her scoring," McGraw added. "The drive is hard to guard. She's so strong, she can finish with contact, and she's always a threat to make the pass, even when she's on her way to the basket. She's very versatile."

If Allen continues to drive and shoot she's going to score points ... with the layup or the foul line. She has a nice jumper that she doesn't use enough. But against UNC and UTN she scored often and feed others often. She was running the show.

If she can continue to be a 20 pt threat if takes pressure of of Loyd and Turner.

Now if Reimer can play 2 halves like she did the 2nd half against UTN that also takes pressure off of Loyd and Turner.

Remaining part of the puzzle if finding the 5th Starter. Mabry has 19 starts to Cable's 5 and Westbeld's 0 but Cable and Westbeld aren't far behind in minutes per game. Mabry averages 24, Cable 20, and Westbeld 18.

To me, regardless of starts they're timesharing, PT and Benchtime. Fresh legs are nice but I'd like to see emerge as the true fifth player for on floor cohesiveness.

Mabrey is the team's 3 pt leader with 40 but Cable and Westbeld actually have a higher percentage shooting 3s. Cable and Westbeld also have better success shooting deuces. Mabrey seems to struggle inside the arc.

Mabrey is the better foul shooter with a perfect 10-10. Cable is close and Westbeld stuggles. BUT Mabrey doesn't draw many fouls. Cable and Westbeld are both aggressive, fight for the ball, play defense, and draw fouls.

Westbeld is the most foul prone, making freshman mistakes as expected.

IF Mabrey can improve her 2 point shooting, it doesn't have to be in the paint, one again it would take pressure off of Loyd and Turner.

IF Cable would attempt a few more shots ...

IF Westbeld continues to become a better player on the college court as she seems to be ...

One of them will be a 5th bona fide starter by tournament time.

With the other two as 6th off the bench, Allen shooting, and Reimer bounding ... this is a championship team caliber team. They got 11 games including a big one against Louisville to put it together before the tournaments start.

Totally agree, that you don't want to make it a habit. I was just pointing out that they were making the blocks. I will also say I was surprised that the whistle wasn't being blown more. As you pointed out, most times the refs will call that foul even if there wasn't a foul.

Loyd is currently #13 on the list. With her next bucket Loyd will move of Achonwa to take over 12th place. A 22 pt game moves her to #11 and a 25 pt game moves her ahead of Novosel into 10th place.
