Seems like an odd pull but if MF stamps it I’ll say give it a shot and pray it’s not Parker part 2

Nothing screams bad coach... except Arkansas being legit terrible on defense while he was there (and doing a 180 once he left), Texas not improving once he was hired, having only DFEI top 10 defense his entire career and that being co-DC at Ohio State, etc.

We'll know by the end of Week 2 whether this is a BVG level hire or something better, impossible to prognosticate at this point. Only thing I care about is keeping Mickens.
I don't necessarily disagree with that. But coaches can only do so much with the situation they're in, too.

I just think people aren't giving enough credit to the opinions of other good coaches who apparently have maintained a high opinion of his coaching acumen. If he was a lemon, these guys would be telling Freeman that in my opinion.

DAMN, ND offered 3. That's awesome and even more confusing. How do you go from trying to buy a BMW to a Kia though?

Okay. And that's enough to win a title.
Yeah, that and $20 million.

Not a Hartline Kool Aid drinker. He's a former tOSU player that was promoted to WR Coach when Zach Smith got fired, which was the unraveling of Urban Meyer at Ohio State. Hartline is a good recruiter. He's probably an even better recruiter now with what Ohio State is offering via NIL. So good for him. He's earned the reputation of being able to bring in guys like Marvin Harrison Jr. and let the talent go to work.

Ryan Day played for Chip Kelly at New Hampshire. CK was a .500 HC at UCLA. Not exactly a masterpiece hiring coup.

1) brought in by Urban Meyer to be Co-DC with Fickell.
2) takes Rutgers job for $11 million, gets canned
3) hired by Texas' Tom Herman (OC at OSU when he was there), Herman and staff get canned.
4) goes to NFL as DB coach, canned when new staff was brought in

Nothing there screams "bad coach." It sounds like Freeman is getting recommendations from Tressel and Fickell that Ash is a legit Co-DC option.

Typically, a coach good enough in the eyes of Tressel, Fickell, and Meyer is good enough for big time FBS football.

Does that mean he's a good fit for ND? I don't know. But some posters are acting like he's an unemployable bottom-of-the-barrel fringe-HS coach, and that's not what I see here.
FWIW Fickell coached with half out current staff... So if anyone knows if Ash is a fit, it would be him.

Hartline was recruiting great WRs before NIL was a thing. And Kelly also went to the NC game as the HC at Oregon, in addition to time in the NFL. It's pretty unusual to leave a HC job for a coordinator job.

I could care less about Brian Hartline. He's a good recruiter and that gives him a ton of credence to a certain population of irishenvy.com Good recruiter then, good recruiter now, seems content doing what he's doing where he's at.

Chip Kelly went to the NC 15 years ago with Oregon. His last season in the NFL he was 2-14 with the 49ers. He's said to be an unusual person, just as UCLA is an unusual football program. It's a new era of college football.

Suggests we offered $3M

BS.

You don’t go from offering the best DC $3 million to dragging someone out of the dumpster.

But, we also courted Ludwig, made a substantial offer, then just said “eff it, I guess we will just let the Porker guy do it”, so anything is possible.

OSU was able to pull a sitting HC at a big program to come to be their OC. They've apparently had no problem keeping Hartline, who is a huge difference-maker for them, even though he could go be an OC or HC somewhere else. This is the difference between good and great.

We'll see who they hire. There isn't any obvious "hot" candidate though, like when they hired Knowles, since Haines is staying at IU.
Chip wanted out and had a long standing relationship with Day. That was not a normal situation.

I’ve learned over my 35 years of watching ND that there is absolutely no point in getting worked up over position and coordinator hires. I have no choice but to trust Freeman and criticize the results later. When he hired Golden Golden I didn’t hear a single person say he’d be as successful as he was. Most were pissed at the hire. There’s so much we, as fans don’t know. It’s obvious Mickens is a very valuable position coach but there’s something Freeman doesn’t feel comfortable with and if he had hired him he could fail just as easily as Ash or anyone else. My feeling is Golden had a lot of success because our secondary play has been so good. When you can lock down most receivers you can take a lot more risks that make you look like a genius. It’s a shame that Mickens isn’t ready for whatever reason but I hope he stays

Jamie U, Tim O, JB, and Greg, also if you are into analytics Tom the intern is interesting
People 100% talk shit about Greg, even if he does good analysis from time to time. Honestly I like all the II and ISD guys, including TP. He’s testy right now but I like that it comes from a place of caring about the university and program. Kinda sick of the whole “It’s all just a business, can’t fault anyone” approach that certain media members take. I don’t envy any of their positions though, they can’t block the 2008s of the world like I just did.
