1 UConn is playing 3 UofL on ESPN right now.

First time I've watched UConn this year, initial thoughts:

They are turnover prone

They have 4 or 5 girls who can't shoot when open

They have a ton of size

Wear 'em out running up and down the court.

Problem is, 2 of their bigs can really fly down the court. Make no mistake, UCONN loves to get out and run. And they are phenomenal at it.

If I were an oddsmaker, I'd probably put UCONN as at least a 6 point favorite over ND. I've seen them play quite a bit, and they are an outstanding team, led by the probable POY in Brianna Stewart. Stewart will present a match-up nightmare for ND, as she does pretty much anyone.

ND can win, but they have to get huge performances on the glass from their bigs, and the guards have to do their normal outstanding thing. It's doable, but it take an incredible effort.

They do have a ton of size, height and weight, and they play well at both ends of the court.

I don't follow the c"an't shoot when open" comment nor the "turnover prone" comment. The stats don't back it up.

FG%
Dolson was something like 3-11 tonight but she's ranked 14th in the NATION is FG% at 57.2. In fact all 5 Starters average in DOUBLE figures. Like ND they have players that can score 30 but the 5 Starters average between 19.7 - 10.0 ppg. As a TEAM their ranked 2nd in FG% at 50.8. Doesn't sound like they're missing too many open shots.

The 5 Starters FG% ranges from .495 (Mosqueda-Lewis) to .577 (Jefferson). The Bench Chong, Stokes, Banks, Tuck, Lawlor, and Pulido are 190/421 from the floor, for a not too shabby, .451. Pulido is the only one shooting less than .425.

Mosequeda-Lewis was out for 14 games. Chong, Stokes, and Banks started in her place. Chong shoots .425, Stokes is the team % leader at .598 and is also the team's #3 rebounder, Banks shoots .498.

Assists
If you're saying Con plays unselfish basketball like ND dishing off the higher percentage shot, yes they do. Lindsay Allen doesn't shoot often but she feeds those that sink them often. Braker doesn't shoot often. That's two of ND's starting five. Stewart, Dolson, and Hartley do most of the shooting kinda like McBride, Loyd, and Achonwa.

ND is #2 in the Nation is Assist/gm with 20.7. Con is #1 with 21.6. They dish off more than we do.

Turnovers
Turnovers/gm UCon #2, 11.8; ND #77, 14.5
Turnover Margin Ucon #11, 5.85; ND #35, 3.53

IF their turnover prone, what are we?

I will submit ND played a far tougher schedule. Sagarin's (Monday morning) ranked ND's #3 and Con's #57.

Sagarins listed ND 19-0 against Top 50 teams and 11-0 against Top 25 teams. He had Con at 13-0 and 7-0. (They get another win in each category for tonight's win over UL but still not close to ND's schedule.)

Adjusted for the competition level ND's stats would looked better by comparison.

IMO, and I have no idea what I'm talking about, but typically the way you beat teams with dominant bigs is by making them work outside the post. I'm sure UCONN is deep and has good guards as well... but the obvious solution here seems to be a full court press from tipoff onward.

Harass on the outside and make them take 15 seconds even getting into their offense and it's a lot harder to patiently work it into the post.

I think that has merit with Dolson and possibly to Mosqueda-Lewis who missed 14 games, but not for Stewart, Hartley, or Stokes. One of the announcers commented tonight that Geno was getting Mosqueda-Lewis PT to build her conditioning back up.

I don't recall ND playing much full court press as they haven't had to. Do we have the athletes to maintain the pressure? And after our Starting 5, who do you put in to keep up the pressure?

My main fear in this game is Achonwa getting into foul trouble early and Reimers following her. Reimers has been getting increased PT lately in place of Braker. I've not read of any problem with Braker so I assumed Muffet was trying to get Reimer's as much PT as possible before the NCAA Tournament preparing for the eventual meeting.

UConn is not as deep as you may think. They only have something like 7 scholarship players due to injuries and lack of depth. Obviously, all 7 are outstanding. That said, if they get in foul trouble like they have in the past against the Irish, this is going to be a huge advantage for the Irish. That game is a hard read. It really could go either way. I really hope we get this matchup in the finals. It could be epic.

They've got 8 now that Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, F, is back and two walk-ons guards (Lawlor and Pulido) for 10 bodies. Morgan Tuck, F, is the 9th scholarship player and 11th on the roster but she's out after having knee surgery in January. She won't be back.

KML missed 14 games for UConn with mono and an elbow injury but they never missed her. Since she's been back she's scored 19 points in 33 minutes, 19 points in 27 minutes and against Louisville she had 13 points in 34 minutes.

According to Geno she's only a 5 conditioningwise on a scale of 1 to 10. But she has 12 days to work without having to bang bodies.

This is a team that shoots well, turns the ball over sparingly, and plays the best team defense in the country.

As for fouling out, it's a possibility but don't count on it. In 34 games they've had two players foul out, Jefferson once and Banks once. Dolson leads the team with 75 fouls in 34 games for a 2.2 fouls/gm average. Three other players were in the 50's for about a 1.5 fouls/gm average. UConn averages 11.8 PF/g while their opponents average 16 PF/g.

They've blown out most of their opponents this season with the closest games being an 11 point win over Baylor and a 17 point win over Maryland.

UConn has 6 guards on the roster with 2 being the walk-ons. The 4 scholarship guards are Jr. Brianna Banks, 5-9, Fr. Saniya Chong 5-8, Sr. Bria Hartley, 5-8, and So. Moriah Jefferson 5-7. Jefferson and Hartley average 30 minutes/gm, Chong 19, and Jefferson 16.

IF they got into guard foul trouble I'd guess that the 6-0 tall KML would slide there. UConn shoots .370 from the arc and KML is the best of the scholarship players at .417. Aside from the 5-7 walk-ons who Geno would use to trade fouls, the other players are The Bigs, 6-5, 6-4, and 6-3.

Also keep in mind that one of the reasons they got into trouble in the last few ND matchups was Skylar Diggins driving to the hoop. ND can drive but not with the ability or frequency that Diggins provided. If McBride and Loyd frequent the foul line it will be a good night for The Irish. If Achonwa and Reimers get in early foul trouble ... or Allen picks up fouls, it will be a long night.

Did women's attendance exceed men's?

Not close, the men play in much larger arenas BUT the ND women outdrew the ND men at home by over 300 per game. ND women played before about 50% larger crowds at home than on the road while ND men played before about 25% smaller crowds at home than on the road.

ND men had 9 games exceeding 10,000, all away. They played before nearly 26K in Syracuse. At home they had 4 sellouts, 9149. The smallest crowd was 7323 at home against Bryant. On the road they played before 5133 at Miami FL.

Men's ATTENDANCE GAMES TOTALS AVG/GAME
HOME.................... 19 158945 8366
AWAY.................... 10 123924 12392
NEUTRAL................. 3 39248 13083

ND women only exceeded 10K once at Tennessee, 13K. At home they had 3 sellouts, 9149. The smallest crowd at home was 8242 against MSU. On the road they played before only 804 at Boston College. They played before only 933 against Duquense in Toronto.

Kayla McBride Among Four Finalists For Naismith Trophy - UND.COM - University of Notre Dame Official Athletic Site

Senior guard/tri-captain is third Notre Dame player in as many seasons to be named finalist for national player-of-the-year award.

3/21/14

For the third consecutive season, Notre Dame has a player in contention for major national honors, with Friday's announcement that Fighting Irish senior guard/tri-captain Kayla McBride (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) has been selected as one of four remaining contenders for the prestigious Naismith Trophy, presented annually to the national player of the year, according to a release from the award's presenting organization, the Atlanta Tipoff Club. McBride follows in the footsteps of Skylar Diggins, who was a Naismith Trophy finalist in both 2012 and 2013.

This also is the second time in a little more than two weeks that McBride has been chosen as a finalist for a major national player of the year honor, having joined Notre Dame sophomore guard Jewell Loyd (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) on the final 15-person ballot for the Wooden Award on March 6.

In addition, McBride is the second Notre Dame representative in the past three days to be tabbed a finalist for a national Naismith honors from the Atlanta Tipoff Club. On Wednesday, head coach Muffet McGraw was chosen as one of four finalists for the Naismith Women's College Coach of the Year award, an honor the Fighting Irish skipper earned for the second time in her career last season (she already has been named ACC Coach of the Year, as well as espnW and Sports Illustrated National Coach of the Year this season).

McBride is aiming to follow the path blazed by another Notre Dame great, Ruth Riley, who not only was one of four finalists for the 2001 Naismith Trophy, but went on to become the first Fighting Irish player to receive the award that season. Joining McBride as the other finalists for this year's Naismith Trophy are Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford), Odyssey Sims (Baylor) and Breanna Stewart (Connecticut).

For the 10th consecutive year, fans will have the opportunity to vote for the player of their choice and help determine the 2014 Naismith Trophy recipient. Beginning next Monday (March 24) and running through April 5 fans can cast their vote through the online and mobile optimized site www.NaismithVote.com. The fan vote represents 25 percent of the selection process -- the largest fan impact of any collegiate basketball award.

Already an espnW first-team All-America choice, McBride is one of the country's top all-around players and recently was chosen as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Year by the league's 15 head coaches and was a consensus first-team all-ACC choice by the coaches and conference's Blue Ribbon Panel (media). A member of the 2014-16 USA Basketball National Team Player Pool, McBride has started all 32 games for Notre Dame this season, registering career highs of 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game with a 1.82 assist/turnover ratio, while tying for team-high honors with 11 20-point games.

McBride is a fixture among the ACC statistical leaders, ranking in the top 15 in five categories -- scoring (11th), free throw percentage (3rd - .874; also 20th in the nation), assist/turnover ratio (5th), assists (10th) and three-point percentage (10th - .368). Her numbers were even sharper in conference games, where she ranked seventh in scoring (19.3 ppg.), first in free throw percentage (.919), third in assist/turnover ratio (2.03) and eighth in assists (4.1 apg.).

On Feb. 3, McBride swept all the major national player of the week awards (espnW, United States Basketball Writers Association and NCAA.com) and was named ACC Player of the Week after averaging 20.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists with a .600 field goal percentage in wins over No. 8/6 Maryland, Virginia Tech and No. 3 Duke.

Those performances are part of McBride's remarkable success in 11 games against Top 25 opponents this year, against which she has averaged 19.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game with a .466 field goal percentage. In six games against top-10 teams, she's even better, averaging 22.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game with a .495 field goal percentage.

2014 Notre Dame Signee Brianna Turner just won the Gatorade player of the year award. Pretty impressive list of ex-players winning it, including our own Skylar Diggins.

Notre Dame has matched the longest winning streak by any Fighting Irish team (in any sport) since at least World War II, duplicating the 33-game run by the 2001 Notre Dame softball team.

the Fighting Irish now have won their NCAA Championship first-round game in 17 of the past 19 seasons (1996-2014).

Saturday's 51-point margin was the largest ever posted by Notre Dame in an NCAA tournament game.

the 15 first-half points allowed also were a season best for the Fighting Irish, topping the 18 points yielded to North Carolina State in the ACC Championship semifinals on March 8 in Greensboro, N.C.

Notre Dame's .594 field goal percentage was its second-best ever in an NCAA postseason contest

Notre Dame set a school record for three-pointers in an NCAA tournament game with 10 treys

Notre Dame's 38 field goals also were the most it has ever made in an NCAA tournament contest.

Notre Dame's 173 three-pointers this year are tied for second-most in one season in school history and most since 2000-01 (also 173; 178 in 1998-99). Six more will set a new school record.

Notre Dame dished out at least 20 assists for the 19th time this season.

Jewell Loyd extended her streak of double-figure scoring games to 38 in a row (second-longest in school history), and moved into 30th place on the Notre Dame career scoring list with 1,039 points, passing Mollie Peirick (1,034 from 1994-98)

Kayla McBride had her streak of double-digit scoring games end at 23 consecutive games, the fifth-longest string in program history.

Natalie Achonwa moved into a tie for fifth place on Notre Dame's career rebounding chart with 937 caroms, matching the total by Devereaux Peters from 2007-12.

Notre Dame's bench outscored its opponent for the 24th time this year, reaching the 40-point mark for the seventh time.

Lindsay Allen's seven assists tied for the second-most ever by a Notre Dame rookie in an NCAA Championship contest and most since March 21, 2010, when Skylar Diggins had eight assists in her NCAA postseason debut against Cleveland State.

The above article is great. What it or no stat sheet can convey is how incredibly athletic this team is from front to back.

And I will tell you this Jewell Loyd is a freaking rock star! TV is great, but you have to see her -- I am high on guys like Corey Robinson, but this girl looks like Spiderman compared to many of these guys! (Super hero, not the webs.)
