For good reason: OSU-scUM game was BY FAR most watched/highest rated regular season CFB game of 2016. 16.84 million viewers and 10.4 rating.

Second highest was ND-Texas with 10.95 million viewers and 6.4 rating.

I absolutely HATE both teams but the game is a big deal. Period.

Large schools usually playing for the conference while ranked in the top 15 with borderline unparalleled numbers of both alumni in general and amazingly successful and powerful alumni. ND-USC is a lot like it in terms of historical impact on the football landscape and in terms of alumni impact on the nation, but we don't have the raw numbers of alumni and we just don't hate each other the same way. UM and OSU are just really important and historically successful universities that give import to the rivalry even in down years and lift it to even greater heights in up years. Contrast that with the Iron Bowl which almost no one outside Alabama would watch if neither team was ranked.
