South Korea says it exchanged fire with North at border

In an escalation of the tense situation in the region, North and South Korea exchanged fire over their heavily fortified border on Thursday, the South Korean Defense Ministry said.

South Korea detected a projectile, assumed to be a small rocket, that was fired toward the western province of Gyeonggi, a South Korean Defense Ministry official told CNN.

The South Korean military responded by firing a few dozen shells at the area from which the North Korean projectile was fired, the official said.

Tensions have spiked on the Korean Peninsula in recent weeks after two South Korean soldiers were seriously wounded by landmines in the demilitarized zone.

South Korea has accused the North of planting the mines, an allegation Pyongyang denies.

Seoul vowed a "harsh" response to the land mines and resumed blaring propaganda messages over the border from huge sets of loudspeakers.

The move infuriated North Korea, which threatened over the weekend to blow up the South Korean speakers and also restarted its own propaganda broadcasts this week.

The two sides have exchanged fire in the past at sensitive points. In November 2010, North Korea shelled an island near the countries disputed maritime border, killing two South Korean marines.

They also traded fire in October 2014. A clash took place between patrol boats in the Yellow Sea, and then another flared days later over land after North Korean gunners apparently targeted balloons carrying leaflets critical of the country's reclusive regime.

Sometimes I just wish these guys would go ahead and get it over with. Lets just have the Chinese, Russia, and US form a defensive perimeter enclosing these two and let em have at it for a while.

Still blaring propaganda from loudspeakers? Must be reruns of MASH.

The South will rise again. For real though.

Even with the loose communist connection, I don't see how the Chinese could support the North at this point. Highly doubt Putin would be stupid enough to support the North. Get our troops off the DMZ but provide reserve, artillery, and air support for the South. Let the South and the North battle it out on the ground. Have a 1 united Korea. Profit.

China doesn't support the North, they just want peace so they don't receive a massive stream of refugees. North Korea causes problems for them by being the source a large stream of crystal meth into China.

One of the things propping up the North Korean government is that nobody wants to take charge of the massive humanitarian crisis that would unfold from a governmental collapse - not even South Korea.

Donald Trump should build a wall as part of his campaign and when questioned answer, "Don't worry about it - it's easy!"

North Korea ramps up tensions after exchange of fire - CNN.com

By Jethro Mullen and Kathy Novak, CNN
Updated 3:51 AM ET, Fri August 21, 2015

Paju, South Korea (CNN)North Korea is amping up tensions in the region after apparently firing artillery at South Korean loudspeakers that are blaring criticism of Kim Jong Un's regime over the border.

Kim, the supreme commander of the North Korean military, has ordered front-line units along the heavily fortified frontier to move to a war footing on Friday evening, state media reported.

His nuclear-armed regime, known for being both thin-skinned and fond of saber-rattling, has warned South Korea it faces military action if it doesn't turn off the propaganda loudspeakers by Saturday evening.

I work with many South Koreans and they don't appear to be too concerned with all the sabre rattling going on right now. Most of them believe that if Kim gets too far out there, China would step in and shut him down quickly before any major escalation.

With that said, there are many I work with that have actual family members in the North and are unsure if they are even alive anymore. It is really sad hearing their stories of their family members who many have not seen or heard from in years.

North, South Korea reach agreement to ease tensions | Reuters

Aug 25, 2015 12:59am EDT
BY JU-MIN PARK AND TONY MUNROE

North and South Korea agreed early on Tuesday to end a military standoff that sparked an exchange of artillery fire and had ratcheted up tension on one of the world's most heavily-fortified borders.

Under an accord reached in the early hours, following more than two days of talks, North Korea expressed regret over the recent wounding of South Korean soldiers in landmine blasts and Seoul agreed to halt anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts.

North Korea also agreed to end the "semi" state of war it had declared. The two sides will hold follow-up talks to discuss a range of issues on improving ties, the joint statement said.

Both sides began rolling back heightened military postures at noon (0300 GMT), Seoul's defense ministry said.

Six decades and they've gotten past the discussing the size and shape of the table. Diplomatic progress!

Funny because most S Koreans think it is no big deal while people here make it out to be WW3.
