I've visited San Francisco a half dozen times and loved it every one. Expensive though. I'll second BGIF on Muir Woods---even if you're not into nature [I am, though] the redwoods will wow you silent. Not a bad place at all to commune with the Creator, so if you visit give yourself a little "slow time" there. If you can afford the "town", you'll love it.

I believe Muir Woods has some crazy history tied to members of the Bohemian Club as well if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure BGIF will correct me if i'm not right :devil_2:

Don't know if the Bohemian Club has wild and crazy times in Muir Woods' Bohemian Grove.

Muir Woods in Marin County is a National Park open to the public for a nominal price. The Bohemian Club's Bohemian Grove is in Sonoma Co north of Marin and it's a private preserve open to invited members for a phenominal price. If my vbucks were real $ I wouldn't warrant consideration for membership at the Bohemian Club until I added a several more zeros at the end of my bank account.

While I was at Muir Woods, there is some placard on a tree or something that mentions the Bohemian Club meeting there, I'm almost 100 percent positive on this one, but I cannot for the life of me find confirmation, maybe I will just have to go back....

Some years later on subsequent business trips I was prudent enough to dip a finger into Lake Michigan (Boyne/Harbor City) and Lake Superior (Duluth).

I took a quick dip in Lake Michigan at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore late summer after graduating. Damn near burned my feet off traversing the scorching dunes. The cold water felt good on my feet, but not so good on the rest of my body when I dove in.

At the end of my first summer in MN (Labor Day '78) I was camping with friends on the north shore of Lake Superior. After three days with no showers to clean off the hike produced sweat and the smoky stench from sitting around the camp fire, I decided a dip in the lake was in order. It was the end of summer and the water was shallow at the shoreline so it HAD to be warm! [I'd been living in Miami before that.] Another newbie southern boy from Tennessee decided to join me. The "locals" just shook their heads and gathered around to watch the show.

We didn't bother testing the water and just dove in from a rock outcropping. Well, the water WAS warm by Lake Superior standards. It was 45 degrees and not 42. I practically hydroplaned the 100 yards to the beach.

At least I have a story to tell. Along with my cross country skiing excursion at 38 below – probably 45 below with wind chill a few years later.

I haven't been fool enough to do either again. With age comes wisdom and wussiness.

If you like the outdoors at all, head down the coast to Half Moon Bay when the weather is right and the waves are big. Go to Mavericks beach. If you have never seen big wave surfing up close, you will be blown away. It is like Hawaii where the big breaks are way out at sea. This break is only about a half mile or so out so you can get some great views of some monster waves. Bring some binoculars. It only happens certain times a year, but if you catch it right, there is nothing like it. Seriously - 30-35 foot waves. Absolute building-size water freight trains. It will take your breath away!

Just a heads up! I'm 30 days out from my impending move. I've been out of the loop the last few weeks, because we wanted to come back home to Ohio before heading all the way out to Cali. We'll be driving back to Fl today and tomorrow so I'll see if can find out anything shortly after that. I know it's a busy time for ND and I'm so excited. Can't wait for the season to start.

Cal Lab, eh? Well, I guess we can't all be perfect!

Travis should be a blast!! Reasonably close to San Fran, The Redwoods, Mt. Shasta, Lake Shasta, Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon, and Tahoe. If you aren't having fun in that area, you are doing it VERY wrong!!

What part of Ohier?

Have a safe trip West!
