they say the berkman to yankees is done but won't be offical for another 24 years because of berkman's ten and five rights. he already approved the trade.

The New York Yankees have a deal in place for Astros first baseman Lance Berkman, according to a report out of Houston.


The Fox affiliate in Houston reported that only Berkman's OK was needed for a trade to go through because he has a no-trade clause. Yahoo Sports reported later Friday that Berkman had waived the clause.

The Berkman deal was likely to be completed before Saturday's trade deadline, a baseball executive familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press. The executive spoke on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing.

It is not clear what player or players the Yankees would send to Houston.

The Yankees turned their attention to Berkman after their pursuit of Adam Dunn stalled.


At this stage of his career, Berkman is not at the same level as Dunn as a player. Berkman, 34, entered Friday with 13 homers, 49 RBIs and a .245 batting average.



Adding Berkman would be a further indication that the Yankees don't think Nick Johnson will return to top form from his wrist injury. Berkman would be a DH and pinch hitter for the Yankees.



The five-time All-Star is making $14.5 million this season. He has a team option for $15 million for next year with a $2 million buyout.
