Maryland, Rutgers to B1G?

Found it interesting that these two school would try to make it work in the B1G? I mean I know the B1G is having down year but could either of these teams be really competitive in the future? Or is it a attempt for Rutgers getting out of a barely afloat Big East. Maryland just puzzles me to be honest.

Maryland Terrapins, Rutgers Scarlet Knights in talks to join Big Ten Conference, sources say - ESPN Chicago

The B1G wants to extend their reach out of the midwest?

Rutgers is a good fit IMO, Maryland,,, well IDK.
I don't see any significant impact to the ACC. I thought Louisville would would jump next. I wouldn't be surprised if the ACC picked up either Louisville or South Florida.

Yeah, why would Maryland want to leave the ACC? Makes no sense to me.

Completely puzzled, I don't know what their current ACC contract is but 50 Million exit fee.. that seems steep. Perhaps it could just be a more lucrative deal for Maryland than their current one?

From what I was reading they were struggling to pay for their athletics, how are they going to pay a $50 M exit fee?

Not sure how this will effect them football wise but from a basketball stand point this is a horrible move.

This isn't happening. ACC voted in a $50 million exit fee right after we joined for all sports but football. Nobody can afford to take a hit like that, least of all Rutgers and Maryland. Not to mention that the B1G is the most profitable conference in the nation; bringing on programs like Rutgers and Maryland would result in less money for each program.

Rutgers is Big East

Until 2017 when the B1G negotiates for new tv contract. I wouldn't be surprised to see the two possible teams brought in 2015. that way they have two years to develop a fan base within the BTN and that sets up for the B1G to be able to squeeze more money from BTN and other networks as well. Do it too soon and other teams will be complaining about less money going to their program. The more I think of it, it seems like a mistake for B1G not to move forward with it. im coming from a football point of view as i do not follow college hoops

This was my first thought. Terps basketball is much bigger than football. And two assistants that Turgeon kept on staff were kept because they have deep recruiting roots in the area, which is all ACC/Big East territory. They would largely lose their basketball identity with this move. Having lived in Maryland for nine years and following them closely, I think it would be a very bad move for them from a basketball standpoint.

So apparently this idea has legs. Apologies for my prior skepticism. Here's Dan Wetzel's article on the subject.

Really terrible idea. Delany is a fool.

I think it's a bad move for college football great business move by B1G. Delany is either gonna retire one of the best or a complete fool. Thanks for the article, it was another interesting read. All new ideas bring skepticism, no need to apologize.

Plus UNC and Dook are huge games for them.

It'd be nice for the Big 10 though. Cause they can tap into the DC/Maryland area which is loaded with talent.

Especially Duke. Agree on the recruiting front. Lots of talent in that I-95 Baltimore/DC corridor.

Really terrible idea. Delany is a fool.

He's shutout by ND so he goes after RU and UMD ... and two schools to be named later?

Really RU and UMD?

Two programs that historically are around .500 playing relatively soft schedules. The SEC is laughing tonight. "We played a bunch of Div 1 aa cupcakes today but they're inviting two cupcakes into their conference."

UM and OSU can drop a MAC game and their Strength of Schedule won't change.

Recruiting hotbed? No. A kid from NJ or Brooklyn that wants an ND degree isn't jumping on board at Iowa or MSU because the Big N is the area conference. He's still going to ND or Ala or USC or MIA.

Stadium Size? RU and UMD fit right in with NW and MIN.

Delany might or might not be a fool but he's definitely desperate.

It makes no sense for any Maryland sports. Football is a wash maybe, but lacrosse, soccer, basketball, baseball-big 10 is inferior in all.

Although it may not make sense. It appears though participation in the ACC is not cutting it for all sports. It may be beneficial to the schools entire athletics program to look else where. It's no surprise that basketball and football are the main contributors of wealth to an athletics department, however if all works out that possible extra few million from lets just say from being a B1G member could possibly prevent cuts like this in the future. Saving or by being able to restore athletic programs that have been cut due to the Maryland not being able to make ends meet. So even if the B1G is inferior, I'm sure the student athletes in the affect programs would love have the opportunity to participate.

Gazette.Net: Terps drop seven varsity sports programs

Alittle clip about the affected programs and the desire to save them.

Also looks like GT may want to bail-out.

#Rutgers is getting the most play (along with Maryland) but multiple sources maintain #GeorgiaTech is also vying for a Big 10 spot.

Power play to try and force ND into a conference.
Any one wanna bet that MD biggest benefactor who supports the move to the big ten drops 50 large as a donation pretty directly.

This signals the end of the BigEast if its true. Look for UConn to join the ACC.

When we were discussing conference realignments some months ago, I suggested "follow the money". The alignments were pursuing not program talent particularly but rather Television Market reach revenues. Stadium size and attendance were #2. At that time there was discussion of the desirability of tapping the college-dormant East Coast market from DC to Boston. Especially New York City but Philadelphia-Baltimore-DC as well. Leagues felt Syracuse offered "value" this way.

The B1G seems ambitious for TV market share. Rutgers is right on top/bottom of NYC, and Maryland is right on top of Baltimore/DC. Philadelphia is smack in the middle. Rutgers and Maryland are both State Universities and therefore rationalizable as "fits" with the majority of the B1G. I'm a lot less surprised at this than the board. The B1G to my knowledge has a huge annual member payout relative to the ACC.

MONEY. You get your nickel, I get my nickel.

As a Terp grad, there is no way my donations are going to keep rolling in. How can I financially support a University that chooses to pay a 50 mill exit fee? Maryland IS integral to the ACC-wtf? Terps bbal in B1G? Really?

MD football will improve with Edsall at the helm. It will take time, but I believe he can do it (not that I have ever supported the Terps in FB mind you).

Mistake of epic proportions IMO.
