So I'm picking up my 1st lever gun - a Marlin 336 in 30-30 and was wondering... peep sights or scope? I'm leaning towards peeps as I believe the scope would muddy the classic look of these guns. Any suggestions or comments?

Alll I can say is, if your eyes are still good enough to shoot without opticals, enjoy it while you can. I used to be a very good shot with open sights, but the older I get, the harder it is to see the damned things. Then, put the reading glasses on, and the sights are good and clear, but everything over 5 feet away is nothing but a blur. Same with all my buddies about my age. So, am in the process of scoping about every gun I have. If you live and shoot long enough, you probably will, too. But, I would say, don't do it until you have to. Give you something to do for fun as you get older.

Open sights for the look and universal use. I have a Winchester 30/30 open sight Centennial Model on my wall in a case that was my Dads. Never been fired. Marlin is a great weapon and I took my first deer with that gun. Good for you. Enjoy.

I see you waited until after the move to make a firearms purchase haha.

I would say stick with the classic look and go with the peeps. A lever action is one of my dream guns. Specifically the Winchester 1866 Yellowboy. Mmmmmm...

I used to love the peep...its fun

I shoot scope now because I hunt with it from time to time, and out here is a far cry from the thick woods of the east...so scope makes sense.

If you go scope...They sell a scope wherein reticles are calibrated to the Ammo so site in is quick, and range much extended. You can get that setup (scope and Ammo) through cabellas.

Thanks for the answers, fellas. Sounds like peeps are the obvious answer. I'm planning on picking up a set of Skinner's. They've got a set of 5 apertures that are interchangeable, as well. It's mainly gonna be for hogs so I was figuring the shots are gonna be less than 150 yards anyways so why ruin the look.
Peoria - I've already picked up 2 in the last month.

I am a little late but I like the look of the sights instead of the scope. Like Nanker said if your eyes can do it rock it. Also when you get it post up pictures.

Thanks for the compliments, fellas. I know I said I was gonna have her case hardened but when I saw her in person I didn't have the heart... she's perfect. Lever action is crisp and trigger pull is smooth. There's a tiny bit of sway in the trigger but nothing bad.
