No offense to Mr. Hornung but he is not the best player in are history Again I love Manti but we have had over 35 first team all Americans in are storied past. Is he the best defensive player we have had since the early nineties, yes but top ten ever is a huge stretch. But saying all that I hope he kicks some **** the rest of the year and and gets in that conversation.

As much as I love Manti. This is is silly talk. Top ten ever? Come on man this is Notre Dame long list of great ones who one ships.

This is FAR from silly...

This program was quite literally on the verge of flatlining when Manti arrived here as a freshman.

The once revered, famous, and powerful Notre Dame was in dire straits during the latter years of Weis' regime...

Te'o, in addition to his on the field excellence, has completely changed the face of the once complacent and entitled Notre Dame football player.

He has transitioned the player mindset and work ethic from the old staff to Kelly's staff, and has rejuvenated a long storied program.

Manti has taken a MAJOR role in this transition as well as being a community leader, a team captain, and bearing the tragic losses that he has in recent weeks, I find that to be amazing.... Not to mention the fact that he is starting out on a tear this season

So, to call this, "silly" just strikes me as someone who either isn't completely paying attention, or doesn't know the whole story...

But he IS in the top ten on pretty much anybody's list of top ND player's. One of our seven Heismans. The original point you made was that Manti shouldn't be in the top ten because of his lack of a championship. I think Paul Hornung refutes that.

(I do agree that Manti is not top ten material yet. But he could be by the end of this season.)

Agree hornung is top ten. Shouldn't have made the point about the championships. My point is Notre Dame has produced so many good players who have accomplished so much in their careers to put him in the top ten is a stretch. I mean no disrepect at all love what he has done for the program and think he is are best player in the last fifteen years.

Manti is a great player undoubtedly. But more importantly he is one of the greatest inspirational leaders on the field Notre Dame has had for a long time. If he continues this season like he has begun (and I think he has the entire defence playing inspired football so I think there is a very good chance he will) Manti's season will be one of those legends of Notre Dame and it will certainly be one of the top ten ever.

I have been watching Notre Dame 'ball since the late '60s and honestly, I can't think of a player I have admired like Manti. Even Montana (whom I worshipped) did not have the kind of impact T'eo has had on this team. The way T'eo has mentored so many young players and presented the team with an example of modest, quiet confidence and unflinching loyalty to the team is a rare thing to witness. Te'o combined with Kelly and Diaco have turned the program on it's head.

I think he's one of the Top 5 players at his position. Overall, it's tough to compete with 125 years' worth of superstuds like Gipp, Lujack, Hart, Hornung, Page, Browner, etc.

Manti's legacy won't be measured by tackles, sacks, INTs, fumbles forced, etc. It will be measure by the quality of human being he was while being a cornerstone in what changed the direction of this program. This is something we won't truly be able to appreciate, IMO, until a few years down the road when this type of athlete becomes the rule, not the exception. When you factor what he has done, is doing, and will continue to do on the field...this is when we start talking about him being an ND legend. Manti is a rare breed who will be greatly missed on the field when he's gone, but his presence will be felt around the program for a LONG time to come.

^^^This. Manti is the guy that we want all ND guys to be. That is greatness exemplified on and off the field. I definitely want to see how his career ends before judging.

Do the Heisman winners get automatic nods into the Top 10?

If so, then there are only 3 open 'voting' slots since the Irish have 7 Heisman winners...... 7 winners...... 7 trophies,........7 leads the way over all NCAA teams.......7 ......7.......7

sorry, got on a tangent there

GO IR7SH!!!!!!!7!!!!!!!!

He is the perfect representation of ND, in my opinion. He is also one of the best linebackers to ever play for the Irish. He is up there for me on the list of all time favorites w/ The Bus, Zorich, and Stonebreaker. Love the kid.

Manti is a shining example of what's right with ND football, but just off the top of my head, I would "rank" the following in front of him:

Based on football, AND as a person?
Alan Page
Rocky Bleier

Based on football alone:

Joe Montana
Alan Page
Dave Duerson
Ken McAfee
Paul Hornung
Dave Casper
Nick Buoniconti
Tim Brown
Jerome Bettis

But Manti is truly special.
