Looking to 2019

After yesterday, just can’t help but look to 2019 and what the team will potentially look like and if we can make a run at an NYE6 bowl. My thoughts on what the team would look like. Or what I want it to look like.

SS: Gilman FS: N/A ( Like to see a real game changer) Allen, Griffith idk


-Obviously I’m making some assumptions of guys who may or may not be here. Just my thoughts.

Pete Sampson believes Boykin Okwara and Khalid will all be back. He thinks Julian is going to the NFL. That’d be 5 lost starters on defense and 3 on offense. Not bad.

I don’t think there is any reason PJ at Q has to mean rebuilding. Guys are playing younger and younger. He’ll be a sophomore. Plenty of sophomores are winning games. We need someone that has skills to make plays at any time, the other 3 playoff teams have that. I’m sick of having guys with limited size or limited athleticism or running ability with zero passing ability.

Me putting Love in is just hoping that the way that game ended wouldn’t sit well with him and I know being a captain means a lot to him. Wouldn’t be surprised if he left at all but also I know certain things mean more to him than they may to other kids.

Well, if you listen to many in here, what's the point? Even if we make the playoffs, we are going to run into an elite defensive line and have zero chance because evedently ND can't recruit coaches and players on offense who can deal with such a thing

I mean, Tom Osbourne and Lou Holtz never ran into a great defensive line. Alabama and Georgia? They face wimpy d lines.

If the combination of Book/Winbush can lead ND to an undefeated regular season, then one would think PJ can do the same...that is assuming he is as good as advertised (NDCrusader). Win a playoff game with this receiving group however might still be out of the question. I really wish Kevin Stepherson was still a part of this team.

I can also vouch for some great reviews. I have family in Pennsylvania that have kids playing high level high school football. Like playing for state championships and getting D1 offers big. They've told me PJ is easily the best player they've ever seen

He doesn’t need to fix it see Phillip Rivers. I don’t care what it looks like, if he gets it to his receivers on time and can throw a deep ball better than Book. He can throw it however he wants. Arm strength is not a negative for him

I don’t agree that Bilal is not very good. In fact I think he transitions to Buck LB next. BTW JGH plays Buck, he was the backup Buck all year, so he is not going to be a rover.

Yea I didn’t have a problem with Bilal. He exceeded my expectations this year. I know Jalen Elliot played better than last year but we need a true athletic freak playmaker. The only two I think come close to that is Derrick Allen or Kyle Hamilton. Idk if Hamilton will be ready, probably not but need someone. Got the heavy hitter in Gilman that is a great help in the run game. Now you need a ball hawk freak.

Is this a new thought by Sampson like as of today? Because the last I heard from Sampson was that he talked to Love after he received his draft grade, and now Sampson thinks Love coming back is a real possibility.

I'm looking forward to PJ playing the QB position as much as anyone, but the realist in me thinks that Ian Book will start the season opener. Ian didn't play well in the game against Clemson, but the offensive line play didn't help him succeed in that game. Other than that game, Book and ND were undefeated. Ian Book will keep the starting job until he falters. He had a completion percentage near 70% for the season. It will be hard for PJ to top that. And the bottom line is Book was able to sustain drives.

If Book falters, PJ will get his chance. But the reality is that PJ starts only when Book has proven to be ineffective. Which unfortunately means we will have to lose a couple of games early for Kelly to turn the reigns over to PJ.

Improvement on offense will depend more on the improvement in OL play than on who's at QB. Since Barr was out for the season relatively early, Mustipher is the only member of the starting OL with no eligibility remaining. We will have an experienced OL in 2019. They have to play like it for us to be successful.

My question for those advocating that we remove Book as the starter is: "Everything else being equal, would you rather get 10 to 12 wins with Book or take your chances with PJ?"

I think I'm lower on Bilal and higher on Elliot than most of you. Bilal can't tackle for shit and Elliot has been a playmaker this year. He fell asleep on the dropped TD yesterday but I am comfortable with him remaining the starting FS.

QB: I really do like Book, my heart goes out to him today, but I think everyone realizes we need PJ if we're gonna compete with the elite.

RB: Nervous about this position next year. Not as sold on Armstrong as the rest of you. TJJ is a solid third choice. He's gonna be #1 or 2 next year tho. If Denson isn't gonna recruit well, he better have these guys ready to make plays next year.

WR: So, Boykin/Claypool/Finke are all back next year? How can you bench Boykin after 872 yards? Or do you bench Claypool? I'm happy with Finke personally. But I think you gotta start Austin next year. Would love to see Keys and Lenzy step up, too. Almost forgot Michael Young, think he has more to give to this team.

TE: Cole Kmet time, baby.

OL: No idea. Is Quinn a bad coach? Can Someone else start at RT? Can we move Liam to RT and have a different LT (Lugg)? Is Ruhland your new center? Not optimistic, but it can't be worse than this year, right?

DL: Fingers crossed Kareem/Okwara come back. Both would be fucking freaks next year. Would like to see Hayes take another step forward. Very pleased with Ogundeji's development. Guess it's MTA/Hinish/Jayson A at DT next year then. I like all of them, but losing Tillery stinks. Maybe Lacey is ready to contribute Day One.

LB: TYFYS Tevon and Drue. What a duo. I don't want Bilal starting next year, at rover or buck. Especially not buck. The man can barely tackle. I trust in Lea tho. Hopefully we can have a good crew of LBs with Bauer/JGH/Simon/JOK. Gilman would be an elite rover IMO. But doubt he moves there.

CB: Love coming back would be unbelievable. I'm not getting my hopes up tho. Pride is the truth. We have huge numbers at CB now, I would hope we can find another top quality CB. Does Vaughn transfer? Crawford coming back is super nice, hope he can have the final season he deserves.

S: I'm happy with Elliot/Gilman. Could Gilman move up to rover, and Allen take over at SS? I would personally take Elliot over Griffith at FS, but if Griffith is too good to keep on the bench I guess that's only a good thing.

I agree with most everything except I just don’t know if Jonathan Jones or someone else is a better option at an LB spot than Bilal. RB is scary. As far as WR I get it with Boykin but you have to get these young guys in there, utilize all the speed you can. Can’t just have Boykin and Claypool out there every snap, it’ll just be more of the same. As for safety I just don’t trust Elliot against elit WRs and that’s why we have to start asking of our guys. Can the make a play against elite WRs? Not Vandy or teams like Boston College

This is frustrating, did Tua have any completions? Larwrence? Look what Kelly Bryant did the year before? Bottom line, your QB has to be a PLAYMAKER, not a facilitator to win a championship. Book is more facilitator than playmaker and we don’t have good enough playmakers on the outside to make that ok.

I see Shayne Simon at Rover and Bilal moving to LB. I think we will have 2 surprises on defense Griffith and (who I am excited to see) Derrick Allen. I am hoping that Kyle Hamilton can crack the rotation on defense.

We had a good defense this year, I think next year we can be better.

I agree with all except why do you have to keep Book at QB? Did Clemson say we have to keep Kelly Bryant at QB cuz of what he did? PJ was a very highly rated kid coming out, I’m not saying bench Book for Andrew Hendrix or something. Book was recruited to be a filler not your future PJ was recruited to be the guy. 6’5” athletic being arm Offensive player of the year in PA. Of the 4 playoff teams, Book was the QB that was different and not in a good way. You cannot have a pedestrian facilitator as QB and expect to get any further than we did this year, unless you have Alabama’s D and Clemson’s skill players. Which we do not have.
