Did Kelly give a reason in his PC for calling that? Please God tell me that Ruffer was cramping up or something. Jesus, Rees shouldve just let it sail at of the end zone, and tell kelly it slipped out of his hand. I, for the life of me, cannot come up with an logical explanation for calling that play. Wind maybe? Was the wind swirling in against us?

You could see at the end he wasn't blaming Reese for it so it's probably safe to assume he called the play.....

I didn't think it was that bad a call. Matter of fact, I was a little disappointed when I saw they were playing for a field goal, but I also knew they were in a tough situation, whether pass or kick, because they were going against the wind. I thought it was a decent call given a 6-3 All American one on one with a 5-10 cover man. Rees underthrew, or maybe the wind caught it.

I couldn't even get mad, because I called game over when D gave up 3rd and 26. Go check the game day thread, if you are feeling overly masochistic.

So was the wind the official explanation by BK? What were the winds like? Would they have definetly effected the kick?

No freshman quarterback had ever thrown for 5 touchdowns in one game. Maybe?? :gbanana:

Didn't see the presser. But dude, did you watch the game? You didn't notice the wind and how it affected passing and kicking? Kelly will definitely not use that as an excuse. I kinda doubt he ever wants to use the word "wind" again. Even I got chills watching the officials pants flapping all game because of the reminder ...

Let's face it..., we now have a freshman qb that was put into a very tough situation and he did his best in the game and that last play he screwed up. The kid played his heart out bottom line. A true freshman qb pased for over 300 yards and 4 touchdowns after DC went down. Great effort for this young man and he kept us in the game. We can whine all we want but we also need to remember that this was a young kid 18 yrs old who did his best and kept us in the game. He really grew up from week two when we played Michigan.

I missed the other 2 interceptions. Where they on him or the receivers ?

OK, but we lost to TULSA. This kid was brought in as one of the elite quarterbacks in the country, enrolled early, and was put in a very challenging position. but knowing you are the #2 guy, you should have a grasp on the offense (as evidenced by kelly allowing him to throw the ball over 50 times). Yes, 4 touchdowns is nice for a freshman quarterback. it's the 3 (maybe 4) interceptions that really irk me. i see other elite programs throw a second string quarterback in all the time and the team does not skip a beat. No excuse.

I wouldn't say he was elite when next to Notre Dame, Stanford, and Tenn are your biggest offers. He was a 3* prospect.

My man, I've seen 3* quarterbacks get their name on the ticker at the bottom of the screen on ESPN when they commit to Whats-a-matta U. My point is, he was a highly touted quarterback out of high school.

I guess our definitions of highly tout differ. To me highly tout would be like

Wayne Lyons
Aaron Lynch
Stephon Tuitt
Justice Hayes
Darvis Daniels

Kids who have schollies to the top of the top programs.. Rees has potential of a being a very good QB but I wouldn't classify him as being elite.

If the wind was SO BAD Tommy would not have been as good as he was. If a freshman QB can come out and throw the ball around in the wind like he did(and he did a great job) Ruffer could make a 36 yard field goal. Btw, we have the best field goal kicker in the nation!

before the play was run, I said. "let's run a play action fake to the HB and pass to Floyd". We tried that, minus the fake. That WAS the KEY to the PLAY!!!!!!

LOL.., I am just as pissed as anyone about us losing today...., I am beyond pissed and am hating the way we are playing. BUT....., We did play our hearts out. We had a Freshman QB put into a huge position and for the most part he played alright and he did keep us in the game. You know what..., We can talk all this crap about who is the better qb and who is who, but you know something..., this kid came in and he competed. I for one will stick up for him. This was really his first college game and he did remarkably well..., he did better than I thought he would do. Give him a darned break already. We lost this game..., YES..., but this kid kept us in it as a freshman and I like that. For all the Crist haters out there..., here you go..., watch what you ask for...., I hope that DC makes a full recovery but I know our other QBs will play well in his abscence.

What the hell are you talking about???? Are you implying that because we are upset over the loss that in some way shape or form we wanted Dayne to get injured?? OK we all agree that for a freshman quarterback he did OK. That is it. 4 touchdowns is remarkable and has never been done at ND as a freshman. Again, OK we get it. All I am saying, again, is that after the 4 touchdowns, he had as many interceptions, one of which cost us the game. Can you really argue that?? A win is a win and a loss is a loss and we lost because whoever (Rees or Kelly) chose to throw it when we have one of the most consistent kickers in the nation not getting a chance to win the game in the later moments. There has to be accountability somewhere whether it be on the coach or the quarterback, freshman or not. Stand up for him all you want. Juice to you but someone made a horrible call in that situation and Kelly did not underthrow the ball.

no he wasnt

And that's why you are so important to this board. Don't you have some recruits to drool over somewhere?? I mean, really. How about another 500 posts on how much you like a possible recruit and how much you really think he would be a great fit at ND? Here's a tip.....if they have an offer....they can help the team and would probably be greatly valued at the University. Thanks for your opinion on highly touted quarterbacks BTW.

Here's my problem:

Floyd was facing single coverage all day with the corner not getting a ton of help from the safety. I don't think Rees looked Floyd's way or to anyone more than 15 yards down field all game.

So, with a shortened field and the game pretty much in the bag you finally decide to go to Floyd in that situation, with a throw that even Crist has been having trouble with this year?

It was windy all day, but the it had died down pretty well by the end of the game too.

My only comment on this game is this: That was an absolutely terrible play call, and thats putting it nicely.

The point is when your down by 2 with 40 sec. left, on the 35 you run the ball for the field goal(WIN). Yes, Rees played awesome, but that doesn't mean you allow a freshman a chance at the end zone when it’s highly unnecessary. This is 100% on Kelly & one of the stupidest calls I've ever seen for a coach. Especially one at .500.
