IDK what you can even do nowadays to cheat besides maybe bring hooker's on to official visits. Real recognizing real they're legit and he's done a great job. Plus I could care less that we're the last team to beat them. Would've loved a crack at them this year that's all I'll say

He's the perfect coach for this era of football. Simple as that. He wouldn't be able to recruit the guys you need to win on "personality" especially not to a place like Indiana. That same logic doesn't apply to a place like JMU where it's about getting correct evals and developing players.

Average age of starters is like 22.5 - 23 years old. He grabbed the best of JMU, mixed them with the handful of competent players already on the IU roster, and supplemented with proven veterans from the portal. The crazy thing is that none of the guys he added in the portal last season were that highly rated... he's just better than everyone else at picking them.

Last thing -- they have stayed unbelievably healthy this year, more than any other team I'm aware of. He says that they specifically recruit for durability but I also wonder if it goes beyond that.

Ability to evaluate talent at all levels is the difference between winning and losing. Fingers crossed we have guys behind the scenes who are digging in and finding the right pieces to finish our roster effectively. Indiana staff though has gotten every inch of ability out of every player on the roster. Wasn't sure Coogan could get better but he definitely has

My question about Cignetti is why isn't he having more success getting high school recruits to commit to IU?? With the success he's had the last 2 seasons at IU wouldn't high school recruits want to go to IU?

What impressed me most about last week's rental haul for 2026 is that he did while still preparing for the 2025 season.

They're only really in the top 3rd of the Big Ten in NIL now for this portal cycle, so didn't have funds as readily available until now. Also, partly strategy to use the portal and get veterans as the roster flips. Cig has said that he believes in building their roster through high school recruiting and development. Their fans expect the staff will have more resource$ for HS recruiting moving forward.

Honestly, no, we probably wouldn’t.

They just blew out an Oregon team that beat USC-our best win-at least as easily as we did. I know that’s a lot of degrees of separation and Oregon to some extent choked but it, along with everything else they’ve done this year, to suggest that they’d be a meaningful favorite in Vegas were we to play on a neutral field or otherwise.

The little bit of the game I watched tonight made me feel somewhat better about getting fucked. First time I haven’t thought to myself that I wouldn’t take us at even money against a team.
Respectfully, I completely disagree. Don’t get me wrong, IU is the best team this year but there’s more to it than one game blow outs.

Oregon had 3 turnovers within their own 20 yard line. IU had 35 points on 175 yards of offense at half. The game got sideways because of that.

IU struggled this year with teams that had + talent on the defensive side of the ball. Iowa, Penn St and Ohio St. ND would be included in this group. Much harder to throw contested back shoulder throws against Leonard Moore.

Not saying ND would win, but to think the Irish are losing by 5 touchdowns like Alabama or Oregon is just insane recency bias. Freeman’s largest margin of defeat is 13 points to Louisville in 2023. There’s no reason to believe ND is getting blown out in big games anymore.

He doesn't really want high school recruits. He would rather load up his team with 21 - 23 year olds from other places moving forward.

The two best teams were Indiana and Ohio State. ND was in that mix of next best and I think would've been competitive. You're correct that they blasted teams that made mistakes / had soft defense and then often got held in check by teams that could cover + rush the passer. Honestly, Miami is a pretty bad matchup for them.

I posted I think it was last season when IU showed up, that to me this is the equivalent of the mid-majors that typically make a run in the NCAA. They do it because they’re playing with guys that are 4th and 5th players. A little smarter, stronger and disciplined.

I’m real curious to see how IU does next season when the rest of his JMU players gone.

Glad to see Coogan dominating but that level of dominance does make you wonder.

Exactly. He's not going to jump to the NFL now when he's royalty in Bloomington and a CFB lifer.
Royalty in Bloomington is like being the prince of Bulgaria. And being a CFB lifer is why he’d go to the NFL now.

I’m not saying he definitely will jump, but he will definitely get interest for some of the, what, 10 open NFL jobs, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he shoots his shot.

He seems a self-confident sort. He’s not getting any younger. And he’s got to know this is as good as it will ever get for IU.

He's a CFB lifer and that's not going to change. Sorry.

It’s only logical that a team would struggle against teams with similar talent. The bottom line is they still won and that’s what good teams do against teams with similar talent.

ND in the playoffs last year is a good example.

He’s making life changing money, zero pressure to win at a basketball school and has been a college guy forever. He has complete control of the program. He wouldn’t in the NFL. IMO The only reason he would go to the NFL is if he has a desire to prove himself again.

I'm sure they'll get better high school recruits in the 2027 class, but why mess with a proven formula?

That's very obvious in March madness and I haven't seen it show up in football until recently

IU has an extremely passionate fan/alumni base that loves its school. They're gonna have unlimited resources (as long as they're winning)
I agree, they have pumped out grads from a good school forever and Bloomington’s campus sits close to 50k now. They’ve had nothing to go to and support since the 1968 Rose Bowl (vs OJ 🧤).

Most of these large northern schools have a chance, geography is the only advantage left for some of the southern schools now.

He seems like a guy with a very strong desire to prove himself, is the main thing.

Maybe the control and comfort level at IU outweighs that. But if he wants to prove himself at the highest level, now’s his chance.

It appears to me that the game has changed, that hs recruiting the old fashioned way has been replaced by the new "free agency" model to create an instant team instead of developing a team with players over several years. This has instantly allowed non-legacy teams like IU, TT, etc. to become competitive and even overtake the traditional powers. Get ready for more now that the path has proven successful.
Unfortunately, college FB is changed and not gonna be what it previously was. The model is more like the NFL. Free agency (but even freer that NFL with lack of contracts), playoff format that has injected untold amounts of $$ into the game, and the unending conference competition to gain the upperhand that results in capturing more $$.

For fun, as we were walking out of the game I asked random Indiana fans "who was the coach before Cignetti" it was split 50/50 some new some didn't...lol. I was like it's been two years, how don't you know! If I recorded it, I could have got a million views on TikTok.

Hanover too I’d throw in with D3s. I have a lot of buddies that played their ball/graduated from there, and they all make bank. $$$

What, no Indiana Tech love? They at least have good pizza and strip club options.
We went on a college day to IT when I was in 8th grade and the fact that they had a bowling alley in their student center immediately vaulted them to top tier university status in my 13 year old mind.

Obviously there needs to be some regulation but it’s the fairest it’s ever been IMO

Agree on the regulation, starting with limiting player transfer to one, and eligibility to 5 years max, no exceptions. And the calendar has to be changed so players aren't transferring during post season.
Also create a Lane Kiffin rule whereby coaches can't "transfer" and tear a team apart during active season.

Yeah I don’t know enough about him but I agree with you here. One of the advantages some claim about NFL over college is the constant recruiting of players. Even after you secure their commitment you have to keep recruiting them. Cignetti has found a loophole of sorts in that he has the resources to attract established players to come in as rentals via free agency. Look at how many kids he recruited to JMU & brought with him to Bloomington. That’s a helluva job of talent evaluation considering they were everything from 0 stars to 2 stars.

I like these ideas b/c you’re never going to limit the amount of money w/ a “salary cap”. Teams will just pay under the table like they did prior to NIL. But if you limit the number of transfers & the other suggestions you listed, it tightens up the system. But never underestimate attorneys. If the NCAA limited transfers, you can be sure an attorney would challenge it on behalf of an ”aggrieved“ player. So the best move would be to break away entirely from the NCAA & form their own league independent of all other college sports. This would lead to some schools opting out or being relegated out b/c they’ll never compete: Minnesota, Iowa St, Rutgers, Arizona, WF, and the like. I would’ve included IU before Cignetti & their willingness to spend.

Didn’t mean to imply I think we would’ve gotten blown out, just that I don’t think we can say that we “would” win with any degree of confidence.

Obviously we could win, and in a hypothetical 100 game series I think we’d win quite a bit, but not as frequently as them.

How does breaking away solve the litigation risk problem?

The core problem is that under antitrust law, once you’ve accepted that players should be paid, any agreement between competitors to restrict what they’re paid becomes really problematic. The NCAA can at least say that it’s a separate body with a history and tradition of regulating college sports and it needs to provide rules that maintain competitive balance, the educational mission, etc…but it would be much much harder legally for the schools to agree amongst themselves to restrictions regarding players.
