Kelly's gameplan was terrible

When you go into a game with a short handed defense going against an up tempo offense like ASU we should have tried run the ball and control the clock. As usual with Kelly we didn't even try. It's the same offense every week that relies on a turnover prone QB to be superman. There's no excuse for us to look as unprepared as we did at handling the pressure ASU was bringing. No real adjustments until the 2nd half when they dug too big of a hole. Kelly says he doesn't know what else to do about Golson's TO's, but he should look at himself first and do better job of putting his players in a position to succeed. Trying the same thing every game is not going to work.

I never get amazed at the posters that come out of the woodwork after a loss.

I would disagree a bit. Our first drive we went right down the field until we has to settle for the FG. The turnovers were terrible.

The problem with this argument is that it is hard to tell how much is game plan, and how much is lack of execution on the players' parts. Kelly did defend his game plan, in the post game presser, by saying that Arizona State did not throw a single thing at us that we had not practiced for. It really is just too ambiguous to determine, whether the problem was poor planning, or poor execution.

It's a combination of both. If the gameplan is bad it is going to lead to poor execution.

When you go into a game with a short handed defense going against an up tempo offense like ASU we should have tried run the ball and control the clock.

We ran the ball 38 times, to 41 passing attempts. I don't see how you could get significantly more balanced than that. Those 38 rushing attempts resulted in 41 net yards, for a 1.1 yard per carry average. Those 41 passing attempts resulted in 446 yards, for an average of 10+ yards per attempt. I think Kelly was on to something, and made the right call here.

It's the same offense every week that relies on a turnover prone QB to be superman.

If by "superman", you mean don't throw 4 INTs and fumble one, then you are correct. But I don't think that too many people would agree that Golson has to be "superman" to make this offense run well.

There's no excuse for us to look as unprepared as we did at handling the pressure ASU was bringing.

I agree. But, in the post-game presser, Kelly was clear that ASU didn't throw anything at us that we had not practiced for. At some point you have to accept that sometimes these kids have a bad day, and just don't get the job done.

No real adjustments until the 2nd half when they dug too big of a hole.

No adjustments were successful until the 2nd half. But, again, that doesn't mean that none were made.

Kelly says he doesn't know what else to do about Golson's TO's, but he should look at himself first and do better job of putting his players in a position to succeed. Trying the same thing every game is not going to work.

To put it in context, Kelly said he has done all he knows, to help Golson hold on to the ball. He said that, eventually, Golson is going to have to take responsibility for making it happen. If the fumbles are all Kelly's fault, then why aren't the running backs coughing up fumbles all over the place?

So with a QB in the Heisman race prior to this game, a good but not great group of RB' s, a marginal O line and not having already watched the game you would have drawn up a run heavy game plan?

Don't know how you came to the conclusion that I said anything about being run heavy.

16 of those runs were from Golson and many of them were sacks or him trying to get away from pressure.

That's not balance.

Ok. We ran the ball 25 times for 52 yards, if you take Golson's stats out. Why would anyone CONTINUE to get 2.1 yards per play, instead of 10+, on average?

was going to respond...I'll just pile on what you said...in short O-line couldn't run block Styrofoam statues, and it only takes 25 or so run attempts to convince yourself that facet of the game isn't there...

That's the problem with being a one dimensional offense. It goes back to poor play calling and poor development at OL.

Hard to win against good teams consistently if you have to throw 40-50 times to win.

They were losing by 31 points. And ASU was blitzing the hell out of them. What do you want from BK? Kids shit the bed in the face of pressure. It happens. BK's game plan was fine. Take away the turnovers then reevaluate. Even the defense held that potent offense to a respectable number.

They aren't a one dimensional offense. You seem to be in the way minority in this. From starting this thread, I imagine you have your stance and that's that so enjoy the thread.

Ok. I am just trying to keep score, here. So far, we have:

1. Poor Game Plan
2. Poor Play Calling
3. Poor Development of players

Assuming that you are correct about all of the above, then can you please explain to me how the hell Kelly managed to go 171-57 at his previous stops? I mean, if Kelly is really as bad as you have claimed here, then I fail to see how he could possibly put together two winning seasons in a row, let alone amass a 74% winning percentage, lifetime.

I think he's a good coach that has done a solid job building the program. At the same time I can still be objective and see issues or mistakes that are made. He's not perfect and not immune from criticism.

Completely agree. Especially the part of the game plan where Kelly had Golson turn it over 1,739 times. That part really had me shaking my head...

Are we the only fan base in the country where the QB turns it over five times and somehow we still have a chance to win the game with 5:00 left, and the next day our dumb fans complain about the coaching?!

Unless the gameplan was "let's turn it over five times, and give away another three points on a botched FG" then the gameplan wasn't the problem.

To be fair, our game plan did a piss poor job anticipating their pressure. Watch the replays of the first two picks. It is crystal clear that they played us... they showed pressure on the outside to force Golson to switch to a hot route and then had their DE's back away from our line and get into the passing lanes.

It kind of reminded me when AJ Hawk said he knew what play they Irish were going to run before the snap in the Fiesta bowl.

We made some good halftime adjustments. Rolled Golson away from the pressure. Worked the middle of the field. If ASU's d was as predictable as Kelly said it was, how come those adjustments weren't in place at the start of the game?

May be off by a play or two but when the score was 31-3 in the second it was 14 rush plays to 14 passing. So your argument seems a bit weak here.
Maybe change your rationale. Maybe Notre Dame should never pass. That would have helped.

Numerous Alabama players said the exact same thing. Predictability. That is on Kelly.

After we got down by 4 touchdowns in the matter of 5 or 6 minutes it's kind of hard to run the ball and "control the clock." We had a nice balance on the first drive which was the only real drive we had not in comeback mode. To criticize the pass heavy game as if it was pre-planned by Kelly is ignorant plain and simple. Pretty sure Kelly didn't game plan for 2 turnovers inside our 25 and a pick six on 3 of our first 4 possessions. Give me a break.
