Is Kelly a REALLY good coach?

Kelly is a very good coach.

The moment he stops thinking every call has to be perfect and accepts that winning is enough then he will be Great.

Until then his teams will continue to make in-excusable mistakes that frustrate him and the fan base.

Just finished watching UCLA wax USC. How is it that some guys like Mora, can come in and take a mediocre football program with a crap roster and turn them around in a very short span of time? Meanwhile, here we are in year 5 still floundering under Kelly to get over 8 wins consistently. It's frustrating, and disappointing. I understand the different academic requirements between the two schools, but that is not the big picture issue here. Kelly has just not gotten the job done. Good, not great coach.

Yes. Let's completely disregard the fact that Kelly took a program coming off of back to back 6 loss seasons, and went 12-1 in his third year. You obviously DON'T understand the different academic requirements between the two schools. If you think that these players at ND don't have to spend 2 to 3 times as much time on academics as the average DI-A football player, and see how that takes away from their time to prepare for the weekend's game (and how that adds up to a lot of the relatively minor mistakes that seem to be plaguing this team), then I don't think you really do understand.

It's a valid question, but IMO the answer lies within. We all seem to have different expectations on this board.

I do know this: I'm absolutely sick and tired of the jock sniffers here that coddle this program, and attack people critical of it. If you aren't a complete jerk about it, I see no reason why a poster shouldn't be able to express frustration/disappointment with coaches, players, etc.

Your expectations are just that: yours. I'm not going to try to force you to change them. But, let's at least have an honest conversation about what factors play into this team not meeting expectations. A lot of people around here seem to think that what makes ND different, academically, is strict entrance standards. The truth is that the requirements to STAY at ND are probably much more difficult for the average football player, than the requirements to get in. A realistic expectation, to me, is that the team improve each year, at least a little(barring the kind of major personnel losses that we have seen this season). And I will base that evaluation off of my observation of the play on the field, not necessarily the Win/Loss record.

This is why I question whether or not some of you really understand what the academic effect is. What do you think that those North Carolina football players were doing with their time, when they were not going to class? Sitting around smoking pot and playing Xbox? Okay, maybe that's not the best example, because the odds are good that that is exactly what they were doing. But my point is; while ND's DLine is going to classes like Business Statistics, Mandarin Chinese, and Particle Physics, other team's units are getting together and studying film, or going over each assignment in the game plan for that week. So when we see other teams out-execute us it's not always a coaching problem, or a talent problem, or an intelligence problem. Sometimes it is just an ethical problem, and the "problem" is with the other program, not ours.

Yes cuz it's that simple at ND. You remember the laughingstock that was ND before BK? ND was a horribly blown call away from beating the #1 ranked team in the country and two years removed from the natty. 7 years ago ND won 3 games. Yeah, it takes time to change the reputation and BK has been able to slowly do that.

I have been holding back on this, thru all the BK threads, because I didn't want to offend anyone. but any one who thinks that BK isn't the right coach needs to have their head examined....

did you not experience what ND went thru the previous 15 years with coaching before BK got here? don't you see the program he built from nothing? don't you see this 2-deep roster better than it EVER has been since the holtz days? if you don't, then no 'back and forth' post bickering about this and that is ever going to make you see it. your blind with butthurtness and you just cant see it.'

im very upset with what is happening with the team at the moment, and BK has not done everything perfect, but by no means whatsoever am I even thinking that BK is a problem.....not even close.

20+ turnovers by one guy, and ppl want to blame the coach...yea, that makes sense

We've played much better teams in the second half of the season and we've been decimated with injuries on defense. I don't think we've really 'regressed;' we probably weren't really that great to start with.

Actually, this is a decent post......... I disagree about making NW look like the Oregon Ducks, but I can agree with the rest of the ideas. I don't think anyone would argue them. I think it is HOW to implement the above ideas that people differ on. I'm not a fan of benching Golson, because you (the generic you) believe that Zaire cannot play any worse. Anyone who watched the USC game last year (when Rees got hurt and Hendrix came in) should know that it *can* get worse...

I personally always thought Kelly was wrong for ND.
Simply put, A true leader takes responsibility for his program. Kelly does not.
Kelly lacks integrity, IMO he is Shifty and sneaky, not to be trusted.
My Son keeps telling me that Kelly is a great program builder. I tell him that Kelly will thrust a dagger in the heart of ND given the first chance to take something he thinks is better.

People run true to form. This is how Kelly left Cincy. Expect the same here.

And as the year goes the team should be improving. If the competition does as well we shouldn't have an issue with it. Redfield isn't injured. Shumate isn't injured. CRob isn't injured. Chris Brown isn't injured. Gilson wasn't when we started our slide. Brindza isn't injured. Yet some are regressing, some are benched for no reason, some are playing more than they should. We are starting safeties with one arm by choice, not necessity.
