Some more Irish trivia.

1. In 1964, he was the first Irish wide receiver to amass 1,000 yards as he helped quarterback John Huarte win the Heisman Trophy.

2. In his great career, this player returned three punts, three kicks, and three interceptions for scores, an NCAA record.

3. In this year, the Irish averaged an NCAA record 92.4 plays per game.

4. In 1954, this coach became one of only two coaches to ever win ten games in his rookie campaign.

5. In 1994, this QB tossed four touchdown passes and threw for 291 yards in his debut.

6. Cretin-Derham Hall, the high school of current wide receiver Michael Floyd, also produced which Irish tackle, now a starter for the Denver Broncos?

7. Only one team beat the Four Horseman in their time at Notre Dame. Which team was that?

8. These two Irish players were famously suspended before the 1988 Notre Dame-USC game.

9. In his first ever game, this wide receiver caught 13 passes (a then record, since broken by Maurice Stovall) for 276 yards and 3 touchdowns on his way to being named an All-American, a feat he repeated over the next two seasons.

10. This Irish QB saw the field in his freshman and sophomore years, then transferred from Notre Dame before the 2002 season.

11. He coached a couple of great defenses under Holtz as defensive coordinator, then returned to Notre Dame under Charlie Weis and was fired following a bad 2006 season.

12. He allegedly ran a 4.16 40 yard dash in full pads. Name him.

13. Name the top three career passing yardage leaders at Notre Dame.

1. Jack Snow
2. Allan Rossum
3. 1970 (Purely a guess as Theismann threw for Heismann. ND lead the nation in Total "O" and had a good defense to keep other team off the field. Second guess would be 1946 when ND lead the Nation in offense AND defense)
4. Terry Brennan
5. Ron Powlus
6. Ryan Harris
7. Nebraska twice
8. Watters and Tony Brooks
9. Cling as in "Fling and Cling", Jim Seymour
10. Matt Lovecchio
11. Rick Minter
12. Rahgib Ismail
13. Quinn, Clausen, Powlus

Talking football letters only or all sports?

There are a bunch with 4 year football letterman (the NCAA gives you 5 years to play 4) but I though I read that one of Leahy's guys had 5 (before the NCAA 5 for 4), not sure, don't recall a name either.

As for most ND mulitsport letters that should be Dutch Bergman who played with Rockne. Bergman amassed 13 letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track. With his two brothers they combined for more than 20 ND letters.

Whoops! It has been a while since I was on this thread. The question is based on all sports.

BGIF nailed it. Every one right.

1. He threw 55 passes in his first start. Who is this QB?
2. He set an Irish record when he recorded 187 tackles in a single season. Name him.
3. Four Irish coaches have won a title in their third season. Name all three.
4. One of these coaches joined the Navy and returned to Notre Dame after he was discharged. Name him.
5. This Rockne player went on to found and coach the Green Bay Packers.

1. Trick question? Brady Quinn but I think he threw more passes in his first start around 60.
2. Bob Crable
3. Trick question. Says 4 then says name all three. Actually there are 5 that meet the question, Rockne, Leahy, Parshegian Devine, Holtz. Rockne won a piece of the 1920 title. He also won a piece of the 1919 season, his second season.
4. Leahy
5. Curly Lambeau

I never knew Lambeau had attended Notre Dame and played for Rockne. Fascinating. I just read that he left ND because of a severe case of tonsillitis.

Great trivia questions Shaq (my twice polarized friend).
BGIF, you are da chit.

12. I looked up Mike Miller but could find no stats. Story seems to be that he left ND because of comparisons to Rocket. Got that from Player May Return to Notre Dame - NYTimes.com, and other stories. How lame is that? I have absolutely no memory of the guy.

I couldn't find any stats for Miller either. Miller did suffer with the fans from "Rocket II" expectations but dormant brain cells are hinting that that there was also a run in with the authorities. The ND list of players has him playing 4 seasons '91-'94. But I don't think he played in '94. I could be wrong but think he left school. And before the internet there wasn't a place for unfounded rumors to gather.

didnt he leave school and come back? (was he from texas??) at one time I think he wore number 1. Wearing number 1, and having the Rocket comparisons apparently freaked him out.

He was from Texas. I think he started out with #1 (back then they said it was the only number that could fit on his jersey. He was "listed" in the 150's as a freshman and that was suspect) but got moved to a double digit number as an upperclassman.

I also think he left, hence my earlier comment on problem with authorities. That dormant brain cell is visualizing a portable TV but it may be confused with FSU or Tennessee players. "The jury will disregard that statement."

I did some digging and he's listed in the "The Rudy List" (those have have played at least one second on the field) in the current media guides as a 4 consecutive year player. BUT the 1994 Media Guide which should have been his Senior year doesn't show him on the roster, nor have a writeup up on him as a team member, nor have a writeup on those that left the program from the previous year. The Rudy List is more likely to have an error and then a player being left out of the Media Guide.

The '94 Guide shows his '93 stats as:
Receiving 19 catches, 1.7/game, 412 yds, 21.7 yds/catch2 TDs with a long of 66yds.
Rushing 0
Punt Returns 26, 213 yds, 8.2 yds/punt, 1 TD with a long of 56 yds
Kick Returns 4, 65 yds, 16.3 yds//kick, 0 TD with a long of 20 yds

He was the 3rd leading receiver behind Dawson and Mayes. Dawson lead the team with 25 grabs. ND only had 118 receptions for the season. This was the last year of the vaunted running attack. Taylor, Ruddy, and Norman graduated off the last dominant Irish OLine. Holtz moved to the Blarney Option attack the next year which wasn't suited the QB, the WRs, or the OLine.

So many variables in posted 40 yard times that I have trouble believing anything under 4.4. Here's a random article from last year (just FYI, Accutrack timing is FAT timing - Fully Automated Timing):

The Fastest 40 Yard Dash Ever | Bleacher Report

Regardless of who's thumb was on the watch, Miller was a blazer. One of the fastest if not the fastest in his recruiting year. Whatever the problem, vision, decision making, cut ability, he wasn't anthing close to a Rocket clone. He was a deep threat but defenses didn't adjust when he lined up. Teams didn't kick the other way. I'd take Joey Getherall over Miller as a receiver or return man.

All right.

I started writing it up, wasn't quite sure about the info, then went and touched up on the info and forgot to edit.

1. This Irish team won the national championship despite having to replace their entire offensive line the year before.

2. One of the best receivers in Irish history, this player was just a three-star recruit and the #40 WR in the country according to Rivals.com.

3. Before Jimmy Clausen was the most hyped QB recruit in the new millenium, there was this guy in the '90's.

4. Analyst Beano Cook predicted how many Heisman Trophies for this QB (referring to #3)?

1. 1988
2. Samardzija
3. Powlus
4. Twice

Is there a word missing in the first question or is it a trick question?

This Irish team won the national championship despite having to replace their entire offensive line FROM the year before.

In 1988 ND graduated tackle to tackle from the '87 OLine. So they had to replace the entire offensive line FROM the year before. They didn't replace the OLine the year before (as the queston reads). Andy Heck at TE in '87 slid over to OT his senior year and became an All-American.

Correct again.

I often leave entire words out of sentences without even realizing it. Thanks for the correction.

Anthony. Vernaglia.
