Geroge West
George West will be out for the rest of spring practice after suffering an injury to his hand in a recent car accident. Apparently the injury was serious enough to require medical attention and many of stitches, but he should be fine in time for camp late this summer.
Golden Tate
Without its senior leader on the field, Tuesday wasn't a good day for pitching or hitting for the Pope John Paul II baseball team.
Knights fell to Davidson Academy 11-0, being defeated by the Bears for the second time in as many days.
The Knights, who were playing without injured center fielder Golden Tate, fell to 7-11 on the season and 0-2 in conference play with the loss.
"After losing Golden Tate last Thursday, we have to adjust our game," said JPII Head Coach Brian Popovich. "We have to find our identity without Golden in the lineup."
Tate, who tore a ligament in his thumb in a game against Oakland, is due to have surgery this week and will miss the remainder of the season.
After dropping the first game of a three-game series 7-5 on Monday, the Knights offense fell flat on Tuesday.
"We lost in a very tough ball game yesterday," said Popovich. "Our guys competed, and we did not make mistakes. They just had some clutch hits in key spots.
"Today our energy was low, and we did not respond when they got up in the first inning. I was a little disappointed in that."
With the Knights trailing 1-0 after the first inning, Pope John Paul starting pitcher Matt Holzmer held the Bears scoreless in the second and third innings to keep his team within striking distance of the lead.
"Matt was doing a good job of throwing strikes," said JPII's Shane Rowland. "And, defensively, we got some outs when we really needed them."
After Alex Issacson and Jonny Drennan lead off the second with back-to-back singles, the Knights managed to move the tying run into scoring position with two outs.
They were unable to capitalize, however, and stranded two runners when the inning ended on a groundout.
Singles by Rowland and Steven Catignani in the bottom of the third inning put runners on first and third with two outs and gave the Knights a second opportunity to even the score. But, once again, another groundout dashed their hopes.
After pitching his way out of jams in the second and third innings, back to back walks in the fourth inning proved to be disastrous for Holzmer.
With runners on first and second, Holzmer issued a walk to Davidson's Ryan Johnson to load the bases, and followed with a walk to Ryan Goad to force in the first of the Bears' five fourth-inning runs.
JPII's Kendal Deep came on in relief of Holzmer mid-way through the fourth, and gave up one run before getting out of the inning.
Deep held the Bears lead to six runs in the top of the fifth, but the Knights batters failed to make up any ground.
The Bears picked up five more runs in the top of the sixth.
Ryan Goad and Carson Rains each picked up RBI hits for Davidson, as the Bears extended their lead to 11 runs, 11-0.
After issuing a walk to Catignani to start off the bottom of the sixth, Davidson's Dylan Potter picked up three quick outs to secure the complete-game shutout.
The win moves Davidson Academy to 11-2 on the year and 2-0 in the conference
