Obviously Sharpley didn't look as good on the other drives as he did on the first. I think he got unsettled: he started overthrowing guys, and definitely could/should have been picked off once or twice. But Clausen's decision-making is just NOT THERE, from what I can see. I think that if Sharpley is put in in a situation where we can actually run the ball as well, instead of having to throw it on every damn play (and PLEASE GOD tell me Aldridge is going to be back!), he'll do really well.

It's not just about Sharpley, though. Clausen was SEVEN FOR TWENTY yesterday, for SIXTY yards, TWO interceptions, and no touchdowns. That's a passer rating of 40.20. Time to be benched, kid.

I think given our offense, you gotta go with experience and start ES. Let JC play next year after gaining knowledge of the offense and hitting the weight room.

exactly jonesman, we dont know much about evan bc he comes in when the game is out of reach (bc, purdue).

lovemyirish, what sharpley was doing was attempting to make plays...like the one where he avoided two tacklers and found carlson. also, would he be as much of a risk taker if the score was 0-0? did you notice that we actually got deep into the opponents territory when sharpley was in the game?

I hate to say it.... but I was one of the VERY few that said last year Sharpley should be starting this year.
I think most of you called me crazy and said DJ would start and some said JC would get it. I think it should have been Sharpley all along.... He even looked better in the Ga Tech game than the other two.
But what do I know I also said we were going to get hammered by LSU last year. Alot of you guys are dome dreamers, dont see what is actually the case.

What can I say it tuff always being right

All this would have been avoided had CW just starting Anthony Vernaglia out of the wishbone at the start of the season like I said...........

Tommy's a fifth year senior. Let's honor him and start an option attack.

1. "He sustained one drive".....that's one more than JC

And it's only ONE. That's not enough justification to start saying he's clearly better. Both are just as bad as each other.

2. He got points on the board - something that JC's seemed to have trouble leading this offense to not just today, but ALL YEAR.

They both have gotten some. Sharpley got a couple more, but it's not a lot (1TD). And Clausen got us into FG range a couple times. Both essentially get nowhere.

3. "Today he got away with it." This isn't the first time that Sharpley has come in to relieve JC and the offense suddenly wakes up.

They woke up for one 2 minute drive then sucked the rest of the 25 minutes.

JC still holds on to the ball WAY too long, stares down receivers like a 12-yr-old boy looking at Pam Anderson in a floss bikini, and still looks like he's not 100% healthy on the extremely rare downfield throws he takes.

I fully agree.

Sharpley can't read a D to save his life though. And after a few INTs get run back, it's going to get ugly.

Once again, WHO was it who ACTUALLY THREW the INTs yesterday? As long as Clausen keeps staring down his receivers he's going to throw just as many, if not more, picks that Sharpley will with erratic throws.

And yes, Sharpley's led us to "just a few" more points than JC, but Sharpley hasn't been on the field NEARLY as often yet still has more points to show for it. And considering how anemic this offense has been, a few points is a big deal.

Hey, I agree he did not throw a pick yesterday. But if you look at his play, it's clear what is GOING to happen. He's gonna throw a lot.

Conversely, if you look at Clausen we are going to be anemic until he breaks out and trusts his gut a little more.

So, do you wait until Clausen surpasses Sharpley? Or do you hope that Sharpley (with 3 years in the system) learns to read a D so he can surpass Clausen?

However, looking at the two young men, it's clear they have big differences, but neither is an improvement over the other...they are just different.

Yes.

Some of those Sharpley throws were amazingly bad, ie the two dropped interceptions.

I really do think that Clausen is still hurting, and perhaps it would be better for the sake of trying to win more games this season to start Evan. However I agree with whoever said this season is a wash. We aren't even going to be bowl eligible at the end of this shit-fest of a season and really all the hard work they are doing is to be a good/great team next year. Pull JC if he is really injured, but only because of that - not because going 5-7 is so much better 4-8, but because Clausen is our once and future starter and now that he has some experience (if you want to call getting pounded into the turf experience) it is rehab time.

Really I doubt Evan gets us any more wins than Jimmah, because the problems are so across-the-board that a slightly improved passing game isn't going to do too much. The reason we won the UCLA game was because we didn't make costly mistakes. It seems that while the offense comes alive (albeit briefly) when we switch to the maniacal-passing gameplan, it isn't enough to make us win.

Also I agree that Weis really seems to be limiting JC via gameplan, and it confuses me. He isn't Pennington, he can chuck the ball. In my mind, it HAS to be lingering elbow issues, but if that's the case then start Evan since getting bashed by DE's never helped anyones elbow.

I don't think he's limiting Jimmy...I think Jimmy is getting used to the Big Game. He's a smart kid and makes good decisions, but he still has a ton to work on. Brady did, so does Jimmy.

Well as long as we're predicting the future, why don't we talk about how many INTs Jimmy's GOING to throw because he stares down his receivers (he threw 2 in half a game yesterday for this very reason)? Or how about how many sacks and/or sack/fumbles Jimmy's GOING to suffer because he holds on to the ball too long?

Evan moves the offense. They struggle to get a damn 1st down with Clausen in there. Sure, Sharpley will throw some picks, but so will JC and at least we put points on the board when Sharpley's running the show.

Look at the numbers...neither guy really moves the offense better than the other.
ESPN - Notre Dame Fighting Irish News, Schedule, Players, Scores, Stats, Photos - NCAA College Football

Each guy has fundamental flaws. I think Sharpley takes the risks needed to get us to possibly win...but there is nothing we have seen on the field which says EITHER QB is better than the other. Nothing. It's all in our minds.

People are far happier to see Evan gun the shit out of a pass for 50 yards and completely miss...rather than watch Clausen miss a 10 yarder.

Fans feel more satisfaction in knowing that we are throwing deep and missing, than throwing short and missing. At the end of the day, you are still not getting yards or points.

That's the key difference between ES and JC. JC will be vanilla. ES will be exciting. Every time he passes we will all start praying PLEASE GOD DON'T LET THIS BE AN INT...LET IT BE A CATCH. Instead of PLEASE GOD LET THIS PASS GO FOR 10!!!
