With the death of Sean Taylor, the gun issue is back in vogue. One player was quoted as saying that he feels it's necessary to have a gun for protection, given that they are potential targets.

I personally don't have a gun, but I do understand why people would want to own a gun for home defense. Just as long as it's properly stored, and away from kids.

I'm not looking to start a 2nd amendment debate, but how does everyone else feel about it. I can tell you one thing, if someone breaks in to my house, I'd rather be looking for a gun, than a spatula.

What say ya'll?

I here ya but I don't think there are needs for a Semi Automatic, M-16, etc...

I'm not too knowledgable about gun laws yet I can state the following.

Most criminals don't get guns the legal way. I'm just guessing on this correct me if I'm wrong. Hartford is having a spat of violent crimes dealing with guns. I am just assuming that they don't come from Wal-mart. So we can create all the laws we want but until the black market get dealt with properly then hey you'll continue to see this senseless crap continue.

Case in point that sad case in Omaha. Where exactly did he get that gun? I'm just assuming he didn't get it legally. If he did then there are problems within the system.

nobody in my family owns a gun, but we live in a place that's pretty nice and quiet and you don't usually have to worry about using one for defense. i can see why people would carry one though.

What?? LOL

Ted Nugent is awesome. He kills for food (I'm pretty sure). But I do know that he respects the animals he hunts, and tries not to hurt 'em too much before he nails them.

But Ted uses a cross bow. I don't have problems with people owning guns. But you have to remeber one thing if you own a gun for protection and you pull it on someone who breaks into your house yopu had better be willing to kill that person. Because they propably have a weapon and will use it. I also agree with Sureal, people have no reason to own these semi-automatic or automatic weapons. I've got a friend who owns an AK-47. What the hell do you hunt besides people with a weapon like that. Also I would like to see the farms that are used for big game hunting (lions, tigers, other wild animals) shut down. They have shown them before and these idiots go out in a jeep or something, the animal is released from a cage near them and they kill them. Real sport. Like stoney said if you want to be a hunter go listen to Ted Nugent talk about it. Total sportsman.

I have about 17 guns in my home that I own. I hunt (multiple game) and target shoot. I love guns. My wife owns a gun as well.

ps. I do eat what I shoot. and If I shoot too many to eat, I have several people mostly older people that love to get meat without having to go out and kill it their self.

I know I would never be able to shoot someone and having kids made bringing a gun in the house too scary.

I have an alarm system and that spray you use on bears.

I would be interested in know the stats on how many guns in homes actually have saved people and how many have hurt people, either accidently or on purpose.

Good question I wonder what the statistics are as well. If you follow basic gun safety tips, having a gun in the home is no different than having a coffee table in your living room it's just another part of the house. Funny stuff Socal on the skunkbear spray!

Here's some stats. They may be a little out of date but here they are.

Does a Gun in the Home Make You Safer?

No. Despite claims by the National Rifle Association (NRA) that you need a gun in your home to protect yourself and your family, public health research demonstrates that the person most likely to shoot you or a family member with a gun already has the keys to your house. Simply put: guns kept in the home for self-protection are more often used to kill somebody you know than to kill in self-defense; 22 times more likely, according to a 1998 study by the Journal of Trauma.[1] More kids, teenagers and adult family members are dying from firearms in their own home than criminal intruders. When someone is home, a gun is used for protection in fewer than two percent of home invasion crimes.[2] You may be surprised to know that, in 1999, according to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report, there were only 154 justifiable homicides committed by private citizens with a firearm compared with a total of 8,259 firearm murders in the United States. Once a bullet leaves a gun, who is to say that it will stop only a criminal and not a family member? Yet at every opportunity the NRA uses the fear of crime to promote the need for ordinary citizens to keep guns in their home for self-protection. Furthermore, the NRA continues to oppose life-saving measures that require safe-storage of guns in the home.

I don't know if you can find reliable stats on that. reason i say that is, this is such a hot button issue, people cherry-pick the stats to suit their purpose.

For example, when Australia and England outlawed handguns I heard arguments from both sides touting a success and failure of the new measures. Pro-gun control people tout these changes as a decrease in violent crime. Pro-right to bear arm people cite the rise in burglaries, muggings, etc., since criminals now know the citizenry is unarmed (at least the law abiding ones).

Something you won't find a statistic for is how many criminals have changed their mind on commiting a burglary, rob someone, commit some other crime because they were concerned that the potential victim was armed.

At the end of the day, laws can only go so far since only law abiding citizens follow them, and law abiding citizens aren't the ones who rob, burglarize, murder, etc.

I guess what bothers me about guns is that it seems so easy to get one. You have to take a test to drive a car, have insurance, and its considered a priviledge not a right to drive. Not with a gun.

Of course, I had these same thoughts when the hospital let us walk out the door with a baby. "What are these people thinking letting US take a baby home?"

......and our world has changed since.

oh yes.

I remember the first time we took our son to the beach when he was 9 months old. We were so excited because we hadn't gone in forever.

When we got there I looked back at and my husband and died laughing. He looked like a sherpa, loaded up with blankets, umbrella, toys, play pen etc. In the "old days" all he would be carrying was a cooler and a frisbee

Ah, the days of pure selfish behavior. I sometimes miss 'em. But there is nothing better than getting the love from a child.
