Gene Hackman in Hoosiers or Downhill Racer?

My vote: Hackman in a landslide. Never licks his fingers and speaks in comprehensible sentences. Hackman takes Shooter under his wing. Davie throws Moore under the bus.

Hammer's vote: Davie

Speaking of impersonators...

Worse impersonation:

UHND of ND Nation or TheIrishHammer of ACross?

My vote: Toughie...I'm going with UHND as worse impersonation. Guys who would be the "C" team on ND Nation elevated to "A" level status. Pathetic.

Hammer's vote: TheIrishHammer as worse impersonation of ACross. Lexicon lacking in comparison. Rapier-like wit compared to butter knife-like wit, according to Hammer.

Davie started coaching the year after I graduated. I remember how repressed the team felt with coach Holtz and his playcalling during the 96 season, you could feel the mutiny rising and ultimately how excited the players were to have Davie come in and 'open things up.'

I remember the team lining up 5-wide on the opening play during the re-dedication game vs. G-Tech in '97 and the crowd going insane. The play would have been executed better by a Jr. Rocket football team, and that was the last we saw of that 'wide-open' offense.

I feel odd for enjoying his analysis on the ESPN/ABC broadcasts.

What, every time I hear him on TV I want to smash everything I see. This guys voice makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I love how he sits there and tells what should be done and how to beat all these teams yet when he was coach he didn't do shit. F Boob.

I graduated the same year as you and I remember the same thing. The team was not happy. Fans were not happy. When Davie came in we were all excited because we felt ND was going to move into the modern world of football...

Obviously success was not in his grasp, but I do remember a sense of excitement knowing the team was moving forward and trying to catch up with the rest of the football world.

Weis got me feeling that again...it's been great.

Well the catching up with the rest of the football world lasted 1 play from scimmage. I will admit I was drinking the kool-aid...figured a coaching change was all that the Berwick Bomber needed to unlock all that promise that Beano Cook made us believe was there.

My feeling to this day is that if he let Colletto OWN the offense and kept him longer than one year, things would have turned out differently. He changed the offense more in 5 years than my 3 year old daughter changes her play outfits.

Well since you were there, care to list the head coaches, QB coaches, and Offensive Coordinators the Berwick Bomber was subjected to during his ND career?

And list the talented receiver corps he had to throw to?

And the broken bones he endured?

Care to list the supporting cast of teammates that made AA or were high draft choices compared to the any of the teams from '86 to '93?

If you took all the starters from the 4 years that Powlus played and compared them with the previous 8 years. Most of Powlus' teammates would be fortunate if they made the second team. Most would not.

It takes more than just a head coach!

Being a big fan of Ron Powlus's and knowing all he endured while playing I totally agree with this post.
