Green Jerseys for Army

Having season tickets for Irish basketball for several years, I know as well as anybody that nobody (mostly people over the age of 40) wears the t-shirts they give away for blackouts - despite the climate controlled conditions. If they hand out t-shirts for a warm September game, more people will wear them. However, not all 80,000 fans are going to take the time to slip a shirt over their jackets and sweatshirts.

That's why I said to do the green towel, like the Steelers do. For the cold weather.

If I'm not mistaken the greens are being worn here because the ND/Army game used to be played at the original Yankee Stadium. This is more of a throw back to honor the rivalry.
Right its a throwback to the days when the jersey was green under Leahey and before.

What i dont like is that BK is using them as just a gimmick for the subway alums, this is ment to be for BIG BIG BIG BIG games, like once every 4-5 years, not just cuz itll sell well to Vinny from long island at the game.

not to nitpick here but the last time we wore the green jerseys was a year later against USC with the throwbacks to the 77 national championship team

Actually it was a throwback/30th anniversary of when Devine came out in the green jersey's against USC. Notre Dame hadn't worn the green jerseys since before Ara became coach up to that point. Devine may have had the team in green the rest of the home games that season but that specific game in 2007 against USC was to reflect the 30th anniversary of the green jersey/Trojan Horse game.

Listen, we as a collective fan base have GOT to get over this:

"Green is only for BIG games"
"Green is a gimmick"
"We should only wear green once every X years or X games"
"Green should be intimidating"
"don't wear green when we are bad"
"Green is special"

ALL OF THIS STUFF IS RIDICULOUS NONSENSE.

We are crazy saying things like this and acting like this. Notre Dame is about being a LEADER! We are known not because everyone loves northern Indiana, but because we were innovators. So, leadership sometimes means knowing when to leave antiquated BS behind, and join the century you're in. We need to leave these old notions of what a freakin jersey means behind... Its not 1988 anymore.

Alternate jerseys are a part of the culture (duh, we INVENTED them). We need to embrace it. Wear them once a year or more, no questions asked.

Its just an alternate jersey, people. It doesn't help win games. It doesn't give anyone an advantage or disadvantage. Its not a curse or anything else, its just some fabric with a different color that might end up spiking your sales and generate a little more interest for borderline fans or recruits. Nothing more, nothing less.

i agree we need irish towels or somthing.. auburn and alabama got the pom poms.. with the kickoff we could use them and throughout the game would be killer.... or blue ones and then green ones for the green jersey games...

You contradict yourself

You contradict yourself

You say it is not a gimmick, and then say ND will take whatever help it can get. Sounds pretty gimmicky to me.

As for the history of the game angle, ND does not do it with any regularity. They generally wear the green when they think they need an advantage.

Its not a gimmick. Its respect for the History of this game, its fantastic for the Seniors and its just over all cool. And in fact, we'll take whatever help we can get to get a W and into a bowl game.

i didnt like the green towels they have out at the penn state game in 06. i didnt think they contrasted with the crowd enough. i LOVE the way white towels look though.

in my opinion, there is nothing cooler than seeing 40,000 fans waving white towel during MLB playoff games because white goes with every team's colors and it contrasts with anything

The Steelers have Yellow towels for every game. Having an entire stadium in Navy and green towels doesn't seem very "green out" to me...my .02

Who said anything about Navy towels? A true green out will never happen, I was just throwing around other options. I am well aware that the Steelers use Yellow towels I was just using them as an example.

Nobody ever said anything about Navy towels. I'm just saying that everybody in the stands (during November/late October games) wear Navy.

I love that we are doing the green jerseys.

I admit that I, too, had reservations at first. However, here is the deal. Kelly rightfully wants this team to develop an aggressive, confident style. By having them wear the green jerseys (and announcing it prior to the game), he is sending a message to his players more than anyone. Obviously the players know better than anyone about the struggles we have heard with the green jerseys. By having us wear the jerseys, he is providing his team with a challenge which will help to motivate them for the game.

I like it a lot. I'm sick and tired of the attitude that we shouldn't get too crazy or too confident because what if we lose and then it comes back to bite us. F that! As BK himself said, "In order to start winning, you need to stop losing." By stopping this losing attitude, we will develop a winning team. It's a pretty important game for the program coming up. Can the players step up the challenge in front of the entire nation on primetime? We shall see...

1 Its not a gimmick. (In this case cause I stated about the History significance) 2 If the players feel like its a confidence boost, we'll take whatever we can get.
see?
Really? You know that? Wow...some insider stuff here.

I'll be at the game, I will be sure to wear something green for you.

You will?! THANK YOU! that mean a lot homey! :) Take a picture for me, too! ;) haha cheers dude

To end the argument I say if they really want a "green out" as everyone walks through the gates for the game they must be spray painted, like a car wash.

thats easy enough.

Completely agree with this. I see the green jerseys as just ND's option to do something special once in awhile, kind of like when you wear a tuxedo to a black tie event. It is just another element of the "tradition" that stretches back for a good many years. Have the Irish used this tradition as a psychological ploy at times to get the team, and the fans, fired up? Sure. I was at the Trojan Horse/Green Jersey USC game in '77, and the effect was absolutely electric; palpably changed the entire attitude in the Stadium. It is only since then, I think, though that people have begun associating the green ONLY with a "gimmick." (Biggest flop, in my opinion, was when, I think it was Faust, broke them out for the second half of a USC game when we were already stomping their a**ses. What a goof!) I think that the idea that ND only wears the green for "big games" or to gain some sort of an "advantage" is too narrow a view, and loses sight of the fact that ND has worn the green many times, and for many periods, over the years.

ND playing Army in Yankee Stadium is a big event for a lot of different reasons. The Irish are just putting on their "Sunday best" (admittedly on a Saturday) to recognize this.

I think you are correct in saying that alternative jerseys are becomming more accepted in college football culture. But ND to me is supposed to be THE CLASSIC CFB TEAM. I prefer the Blue and Gold. I do love when they suprise me and wear the green Jerseys... I just thought Kelly would certainly wait a while. I mean they just wore them in 2007... Let the mystique build up again.

I have mixed feelings here.

Part of me wants to say the green jerseys are supposed to be special or only for big games as many others have said. Knowing their history, there is a part of me that wants to respect that and keep that tradition.

The other part of me agrees 100% with nlroma1o that "Alternate jerseys are a part of the culture (duh, we INVENTED them)." And that "We are known not because everyone loves northern Indiana, but because we were innovators." In this case we should be flashing some sort of sick green jerseys at least once a year. After all, why do you think the Oregon bandwagon has gotten so big? (HINT: the word innovator seen earlier has something to do with it.)

I think there is a way to mix our incredible tradition with innovation and I think it will be done. If this 20 year drought has done anything, it has created a new generation of Notre Dame football fan. The old people that yell at you for standing (no disrespect to them) won't be there soon. The new old people will be ones that yell at you for not standing. I'm usually the first to stand up for tradition and avoid change, but I think we need change now, we are getting change now, and Brian Kelly is the guy to be doing it. I think we're headed in a different (and much better) direction now, and I think we will start to see it soon.

Regardless of what we do with the jerseys, they won't mean anything if we don't start (or keep) winning. We need to get back to where when we come out in green the stadium gets that "electric" feeling instead of people hanging their heads and cursing the heavens because God let us come out in green that day. If we've finished in the top 10 for the past three years, and #5 ND runs out of the tunnel in green agaisnt Tulsa do you think people are gonna say "Oh no, we wore green. We're sure to lose." No. They're gonna be saying "HELL YEAH WE'RE GONNA KICK THEIR A$$ IN GREEN BABY!" <-- thats what we need to set our sights on. Step one to getting there is winning on Saturday against Army regardless of what color our team is dressed in. Come on.

I spoke with Lane Clelland as to the color (kelly green or dark) and he said "I think dark." That's not very official but at least we got something!

I'd actually like to see them trot out an golden jerseys with navy blue numbers. Yeah, yeah, I know that wouldn't fit in with the tradition but I think it would be an interesting concept. There are a couple of websites out there that create mock-ups of alternate jersey ideas....one of them had ND wearing a pro-combat style jersey. I really loved the look but I'm sure that many wouldn't like the look.

Notre Dame doesn't wear Nike, first off. And second, they have the longest running streak of consecutive seasons without changing their helmet. I wouldn't hope for any changes.
